View Full Version : Misc Are You Doing Anything for Cinco De Mayo?

Is Cinco De Mayo celebrated at all in your part of the country? Here in Phoenix non-Mexican people celebrate it big time as a reason to drink. The Mexicans here pretty much don't care aobut it.

Anyone doing anything for Drinko De Mayo?

Nada

Well, It is the last day of finals, and our class usually has some kind of pot luck on Finals Thursday, so we're doing it Cinco de Mayo style. One lady, who used to live near LA ALWAYS cooks and brings in Mexican food (she's not Mexican), so she's in cooking heaven today. Having no time to make anything, I signed up to bring plates, plastic cutlery, and napkins.

Well, since I'm of German lineage, I will probably go crappie fishing, make something killer on the grill, and have a few coctails. I haven't ever understood why I would celebrate Cinco de Mayo, or anyone else in the USA that wasn't of Mexican desent. I mean, do you celebrate Tet, Canada Day, the Hopi new year, etc?

We celebrate it just because it's a good excuse to have some delicious foods and some margaritas. We don't care about what the holiday really means!

Mexicans I know here don't celebrate it. They beat the French in a war. It's not like it's even their Independence Day. That's not until September.

Hell, I still don't understand why they celebrate it. In Mexico we do nothing. And from my broken Spanish translation of the meaning behind it, you are celebrating a battle, and this is the weird part, but I think someone told me Mexico actually lost the battle.

EDIT: Nope, according to wikipedia, we won that battle.

It is 100% made up holiday as far as us gringos are concerned. for many years we would head down to Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) Mexico for Drinko de Mayo and spend it getting ****ed up with a few thousand other Arizonans. Now they have managed to turn their own country into such a danger zone that we haven't driven down there for the past 2 years.

I'm making adobo grilled pork tacos, we'll drink margs out of mason jars poolside (its about 100 here today) but this day feels like a total letdown compared to Rocky Point.

Oh, I party plenty. Just don't need to "celebrate" some other countrys holiday to do it.

My father in law lives in Austin, TX. Every year he has a New Year's party at his ranch. Each year he picks a different country and that countrie's native alchoholic beverages are what is served. In addition they countdown to midnight according to the time zone of the country being celebrated. Some years that means everyone is in the bag and passing out while the sun is still up.

LMAO Yep, you won that one. Mexicans here in the Phoenix area by and large dont' give **** about Cinco. For that matter Mexicans here don't drink Mexican beer, they drink Bud Light. The largest percentage of Mexican beer sales in Phoenix are to the gringos.
Anyway, happy Cinco de Mayo to you even if you don't care aobut it.

Had a few friends over. Made a taco bar and skinny margaritas:

2 oz. silver tequila
1 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz. agave nectar dissolved in 1/2 oz. warm water.
Splash of blood orange or clementine juice.

Delicious.

And yes, I'm fully aware that it's a gringo holiday, and most actual Mexicans couldn't give two shits about it.

It's not even my favorite "mexican" holiday, though. That would be Dia de los Muertos, which we do celebrate at my household, because we love the idea and iconography associated with it.

Day Of The Dead rocks. Skeletons are cool.

Cinco de Mayo? Psshaw. That's Mexican for "Another Fake Holiday For White Americans To Use As An Excuse To Get Shitfaced". Much like St. Patrick's Day turned into. In the good old days, people would get trashed on New Year's Eve. Now there's New Year's Eve, St. Patrick's Day, Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo, every Friday and Saturday in July and August, Daytona 500, Super Bowl, any time there's a full moon... Oh, yeah, now we can probably add Osama Death Day, LOL.

I suppose I was multicultural though, if you consider a Sicilian dude driving to a Native American casino to eat Chinese food. (The food wasn't bad. I threw $30 at the slots to appease the redman.)
