Matt Light - T - Patriots

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss floats the possibility of free agent LT Matt Light signing with the Chiefs.
Light has obvious ties to Chiefs GM Scott Pioli, and Kansas City could use an upgrade at offensive tackle over Barry Richardson. Reiss suggests a two- or three-year agreement. Light seems unlikely to return to New England after publicly admonishing Pats owner Bob Kraft during CBA talks. Factors working against Light are age (33 next month) and offseason shoulder surgery.

I'd say the chances of Light joining the Chiefs are reasonably high. The Chiefs need him more than the Pats, suggesting that they should outbid us for him. He fills a need, understands the system, and has a few good years left. It gives you an above-average fill-in for a year or two while you find a permanent LT solution.

Well, I think one it has to do with his age. The guy is 33 and he is coming off a shoulder surgery so that says a lot right there as to why they drafted a LT.

But I still think he can play. Just the Pats are going in a different direction.

I hope that the Patriots aren't going to rely on Solder at LT out of the gate, especially if the offseason is cut short by the lockout. The kid's got strength and technique issues that need to be worked on, and it's going to be bad enough dealing with the RG problem without adding a LT problem to the mix. There's only so much that can be covered up for.

Matt Light gave up double digit sacks last year... and he did it with a QB who doesn't take a lot of bad sacks.

I'm not sold he's got the tools to keep playing LT at this point in his career, because his play was below Albert's last season.

I'd give him a 2-year deal. At least BRich would be good depth, since we have none at the OT position as it is.

Next season focus on OT, ILB, WR, and another NT

Matt Light was covering for Connolly to start last year, because Mankins was unsigned. Some of the sacks he was tagged for were actually a result of Connolly's poor play. If you look at the sites that assign 10 sacks to Light, they don't give any to Connolly. That's definitely not accurate.

Quoting this again to point it out.

As a LT, Light's done.

As a RT, even with his age and issues, Light would definitely be an upgrade over Richardson.

If he'd agree to a fiscally reasonable two-year deal, the Chiefs could do a lot worse at RT.

For depth? If he's cheap...fine. But Albert has done a good job at LT and I'd rather play Richardson at RT. He's young and basically should have this year to prove that he belongs as a starting RT in the league.

Can he play RIGHT tackle?

"In my brilliance," Belichick said with a smile, "I put [Light] at right tackle as a rookie. It didn’t really work out at all. He has the physical skills to play over there. But, then, he just … Matt’s just a left tackle. When you look at his skills, I don’t think you look at him and say, ‘Well, I don’t think he has the skills to play right tackle.’

"But he’s just much more comfortable on the left side and he’s a much better left tackle than he was a right tackle, when we tried to play him there his rookie year. Once we got him back to left tackle, he was a much better football player. That was his rookie year, so maybe if it was his third year, he would’ve adjusted to it better. I don’t know, we just left him at left because he’s done a good job for us over there."

RT isn't inherently easier than LT but the inference is that a QB can survive with a weaker RT because the QB (assuming he's right-handed) is facing the rush instead of being blindsided by it. If Light fucks up at RT Cassel would see it occurring (as opposed to it happening to his half-turned back and the result being a devastating sack-fumble).

Pats agree to terms with Matt Light
Posted by Mike Florio on August 1, 2011, 7:01 AM EDT

The New England Patriots will return in 2011 with all five starters on their offensive line. The final 20 percent of the large-man puzzle fell into place when left tackle Matt Light agreed to terms on a two-year deal, per Greg Bedard and Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe.

Light is entering his 11th season.

The decision to pick Nate Solder in the first round of the 2011 draft caused some speculation that Light wouldn’t be back. Right tackle Sebastian Vollmer had been playing left tackle during the early preseason practices.
