Only months after leaving office, Arnold Schwarzenegger has separated from his wife, Maria Shriver after 25 years of marriage, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

According to the Times, Shriver has moved out of the Brentwood mansion that she shared with the movie star who was elected governor of California in 2003 and went on to serve two terms in Sacramento. The newspaper printed a statement from the couple in response to a query on the subject.

“At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship,” the statement read in part.

The couple have four children, the youngest of whom is 13 years old.

“We ask for compassion and respect from the media and the public,” the couple said in their statement.

Shriver, a TV journalist who grew up as part of the extended Kennedy family, married Schwarzenegger in April 1986, two years after his breakthrough movie role in “Conan the Destroyer” and James Cameron’s “The Terminator.” He remained one of the world’s top action movie stars through the 1990s.

The native of Austria, once the world’s top bodybuilder, dove into politics in 2003 at the time of a recall election for Democratic Gov. Gray Davis. In a wide-open field, he won 49 percent of the vote on the replacement ballot, and the Republican was reelected in a landslide in 2006, garnering 56 percent of the vote against Democrat Phil Angelides.

Widely expected to return to the entertainment business once his time in office was up, Schwarzenegger recently announced a collaboration with comic-book legend Stan Lee to develop “The Governator.”

Shriver’s father, former vice-presidential candidate Sargent Shriver, died in January of this year at the age of 95. She had won awards for chronicling the Alzheimer’s that destroyed his mind.

The couple is the second prominent one to split this year at the conclusion of two terms in the governor’s office. In February, fresh out of office, Pennsylvania Democrat Ed Rendell separated from his wife of four decades, Judge Marjorie “Midge” Rendell.
