Bob Gretz on his web site and Josh Looney at kcchiefs.com have done 3 or 4 stories about KC free agency and what might happen with this year.

They looked at free agent signing from the last two years from the Chiefs and the conclusion I drew from their stories, don’t expect any big name signings. KC looks for cast offs from other teams. Tim Castille, Chris Chambers, Terrance Copper, Kevin Curtis, Thomas Jones, Ryan O’Callaghan, Leonard Pope, Jerheme Urban, Anthony Toribio, and Casey Wiegmann are players that were signed as free agents. All of these players were fairly low cost and really not in demand by other teams.

KC could use a backup QB like Marc Bulger but other teams will want him, so Pioli probably won’t go there.

NT Aubrayo Franklin and TE Bo Scaife could also be valuable additions to the Chiefs but they also don’t fall into the low cost, low demand category.

Expect several college free agents, many that you’ve never heard of.

Some possible free agents for the Chiefs...

KC will re-sign Shaun Smith or Ron Edwards and maybe both.

Leonard Pope or Daniel Graham at TE.

Matt Light at OT.

Might bring back Copper because they need a WR that can play special teams.

QB Drew Stanton if Detroit does not try and bring him back.

Make up your own list of FAs for the Chiefs, but consider cost and demand with your players.

Based on the short history no one could argue this .
But I have faith that it is not set in stone and that as the team improves that philosophy will change.
As the talent level on the team rises the need for such players goes down.
At that point of the rebuild I would think it might be the opposite and they will go after "big" names when they feel they are only a player or 2 from getting over the top.

You might be right.

They won't get in a bidding war for a player though. That is not the way they did things in New England. They picked up players like Rodney Harrison, Junior Seau, and Tim Dwight and tried to squeeze the last few drops from them.

Take a look at http://archive.patriots.com/history/index.cfm?ac=FreeAgents&year=2005&signed=yes&submit=Submit
for New England Free Agent history.

It is a good thing to not over pay for expensive free agents. Pioli will shop the FA market and try to bring in the players he thinks will add the most value for the least amount of money.

Casey Wiegmann was an improvement over Rudy Niswanger last year. Thomas Jones seemed to wear down last season but at the time of his signing, it seemed like a good one.

KC still has some holes on their roster and I expect some to be filled with college free agents with 2 or 3 veterans also being signed.

He's twice the player as Big Ron, very active & physical.

DE Glenn Dorsey
DE Wallace Gillberry
DE Tyson Jackson
DE Allen Bailey
DE Gabe Miller
DT Ron Edwards FA
DT Dion Gales
DT Bobby Greenwood
DT Shaun Smith FA
DT Anthony Toribio
NT Jerrell Powe

If KC keeps 4 DEs and 2 NT/DTs then you have Dorsey, Gillberry, Jackson, and Bailey at defensive ends and Powe and ??? at the NT position. Might be Smith or Edwards for that last defensive line spot. Between the two for NT position, which is the better player? If Powe does not play well in camp, then the Chiefs are looking for 2 NTs.

I simply dont see a case of Addition by Subtraction here, in my honest estimation Smith is a real football player.

We have Torribio in the mix & if theres a season, there should still be time for free agent signings of all kinds, almost surely no splash, but players that have a chance to contribute.

Getting rid of a real gamer, is not a plus in my book.

I agree that the Chiefs should try and bring back Shaun Smith but at a team friendly contract. He's a good football player and can play at DT or DE. If they do sign him, you have to look at the numbers and determine who goes. Many CPers would say Tyson Jackson, but I don't think Pioli would give up on a 3rd year 1st round draft pick. Wallace Gillberry may be in his last year with the Chiefs since he is a RFA. A 4 -3 team might be willing to make a trade for him and sign him to an extension. Allen Bailey would probably take over the role that Gillberry filled last season.

As only a 6th round pick, I don't think Powe has a guarantee of making the team. The one thing he has going in his favor, we have nobody else at NT. I'd like the Chiefs to sign CFA NT Ian Williams.

Back to the original point...I agree that KC should bring back Shaun Smith.
