I don't like the "real" version ... I was thinking more along the lines of if you could be healthy and eat only five foods, what would they be.

As for actual health, I'm not sure you could get all the essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc. you need to survive off only five foods.

What's the food pyramid?

If it's raw food you probably can't be healthy on five. Maybe you'd have to go with oranges, broccoli, wheat bread, chicken, and cheddar cheese.

If it's recipes you can go more fancy. Maybe fruit cocktail, pizza (beef and pineapple with extra cheese and tomato), club sandwiches, cobb salad, and on Saturday, broccoli with cheese.

Grapes are good. Blueberries are good. But together they're kind of redundant. The blueberries give you most of the positives of the grapes and add antioxidants and such. I'd drop the grapes and look for some healthy fats. You have almost no fat in those 5 and you need mono and polyunsaturated fats in your diet. They are actually healthy and necessary to process fat-soluble vitamins.

Off the top of my head, some ideas for healthy fats: nuts (including organic nut butters), avocado, fatty fish (salmon, trout, etc)

My wife uses ramen noodles to make really mean chicken soup.

I know she marinates the chicken in some recipe that she came up with, and she uses the marinade as a base for some kind of light, soupy gravy that she uses in place of water with the noodles, ad of course adds the chicken.

I can't decide on what veggie and fruit would be best to sustain a healthy life. But sweet potatoes give you carbs and nutrients and chicken and fish would be good to have. In a survival situation, those 3 would be great to farm. But obviously you would need to pick a veggie that is packed with vitamins and nutrients to keep you healthy. Maybe spinach and oranges, can't think that hard right now.

Have you ever actually been to Sicily? Holy shit, what a miserable cesspool. I know what real ravioli tastes like but the payoff of flavor vs. convenience in Chef Boy Ardee is tremendous.

To this day, Catania remains the filthiest place I've ever been. It made Naples look like Scottsdale. I hope the rest of the island isn't that nasty, or that at least at some point they've cleaned it up a bit. Assuming they could find enough bulldozers to clear the trash off the streets.

Hard to keep it to 5.

Chicken, Fish, Broccoli, Oranges, Apples.

I'd really want to expand it to 10 and add Carrots, Lettuce, Strawberries, Blueberries and Yogurt.

Potatoes - For their variety and vitamin content
Oranges - Vitamin C plus a source of food and hydration.
Large Beef Roast - You can make hamburgers, steak, pot roast, etc.
Block of mild cheese - Something like mild cheddar or provalone. You can actually age it and vary it's flavor.
Tomatoes - Multi-purpose food.

Now I can make some of the following with the above list:

Ketchup
BBQ Sauce
Liquor
Meatloaf
Post Roast
Hamburgers
Smoked Brisket
Noodles - (Potato Noodles are good)
Dumplings
Marinara Sauce, (although bland)

Well, you see the point.

Now then, foods that I would actually like that wouldn't require much work:

BBQ Ribs
Beer
Diet Pepsi
Fried Chicken
Burritos

My wife wants to know if flour counts as a food. Opens a lot of possibilities.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the town that popped into my mind when he mentioned Sicily. Close to Sigonella?

That's the one - nearest port my ship could dock when we went there. What a pisshole. Still had bombed out buildings from WWII that nobody had ever bothered to tear down. You'd think after four decades or so (I was there in the 80s) somebody would get around to taking care of that. Last time I checked, Sicily was part of Italy, not Somalia.

Yep same here:

In 1986, the carrier made her 12th WESTPAC deployment. On 28 April 1986, Enterprise became the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to transit the Suez Canal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suez_Canal). She went from the Red Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sea) to the Mediterranean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_Sea) to relieve Coral Sea, on station with America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_America_%28CV-66%29) off the coast of Libya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libya). Enterprise entered the Mediterranean to support "Operation Eldorado Canyon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Eldorado_Canyon)", the U.S. bombing of Libya. It was the ship's first visit to the Mediterranean in more than 22 years.

My ship (FF-1063 Reasoner) was in that group. We had a stopover in Sigonella, what a shit hole. I was supposed to stand watch on the pier in the middle of the night. After encountering Rodents Of Unusual Size, I scurried back to the plank and demanded a firearm. They wouldn't issue me one, I refused to leave the plank. I recall telling my direct superior, "**** that. That God damned rat is as big as a dog. I'm not going back out there. **** this. Give me a pistol or I'm not going anywhere. **** this." Next morning orders came down that we were no longer required to patrol the pier at night.

When we got to leave the ship, we had to use the buddy system to avoid getting jumped. I recall stopping at a news stand (first time we had seen any media in months) and checking it out. A large old woman began griping at us in various languages as soon as we touched a paper. Eventually she got to English, "I don't sell to Americans". I started to walk away, my buddy started bitching , I pointed out the foot patrol with Uzi's approaching us and convinced him to leave. I stayed on the base after that, I had seen enough decay, poverty and filth. From the 50+ old whores meandering down "main street" looking for customers amongst the ruins to the merchants and citizens shooting evil glares and hand gestures at us, I had seen enough.

On the bright side, they had some great coffee at the mess hall. First time I had ever had espresso. Awesome cinnamon rolls too.

LMAO Great story. Frankly, too much time has passed for me to recall much of anything other than how goddamn dirty it was. I assume we found a bar at some point and got hammered as usual. The only evidence I have left of my visit to Sicily and its gigantic heaps of trash is a couple of photos of me standing on the flight deck with Mount Etna in the background. I also don't recall running into any ROUS's - I'm sure I'd remember that.

I do remember when my ship unrepped the Enterprise, which was obviously right around the same time. That was the only time I ever saw her.

I was flown to the E, then hooked up with the Sacramento, then finally to the Reasoner. Man, I have almost no pictures from that time. I did find one of my buddy wandering across the flight deck holding a hot dog out in place of his dick. Long story...

My ship was alongside carriers more times that I can remember, but I never set foot on one. I sort of regret it now.

But I didn't regret it enough to stay in and get stationed on one. :D

Spinach
Blueberries
Chicken
Greek Yogurt
Almonds

I'd like a little more variety than that, specifically some broccoli, bell pepper, avocado and mushrooms to throw in a chicken/spinach salad but I think you could do pretty well with those five.

It was strange and confusing, I got lost over and over again. Lots of cool stuff thought. I was aboard the Enterprise en route to my ship, and as a kid I was aboard the Eisenhower for a short dependents cruise off the coast of Virginia.
