1. Bill Belichick — Might be one of the few meticulous planners who benefit from lockout.

2. Mike Tomlin — Brilliant coaching in 2010 with Big Ben saga; now freed of that.

3. Mike McCarthy — Trust is mutual between the coach and GM Ted Thompson.

4. Andy Reid — Will be questioned if Juan Castillo experiment goes awry.

5. Sean Payton — Knows he still can use Reggie Bush — at a far lower cost.

6. Tom Coughlin — Another coach who will account for every possibility this offseason.

7. John Harbaugh — Knows it is a critical season for Joe Flacco.

8. Rex Ryan — Has done more in first two seasons than many coaches do in a career.

9. Mike Smith — Keeping focus of young, talented team will be his prime mission.

10. Mike Shanahan — Many will question if he still has it if he can't produce a QB in D.C.

11. Lovie Smith — Panned at times locally, Smith just stays the course and keeps winning.

12. John Fox — Had string of .500-ish teams in Carolina, but rebuilding Broncos could use that.

13. Jim Caldwell — Some of Tony Dungy's former confidants are not there anymore.

14. Ken Whisenhunt — Get him a quarterback and he'll look a lot smarter.

15. Norv Turner — Shaky reputation took hit again with last season's failures.

16. Raheem Morris — Young gun slowly climbing the ladder with confidence.

17. Marvin Lewis — Often makes the most of some bad hands dealt to him.

18. Tony Sparano — Facing crucial season; must prove himself to impulsive owner.

19. Todd Haley — Seems like he can't help himself in terms of wanting control.

20. Pete Carroll — Rah-rah spirit obscures fact that he knows his X's and O's.

21. Jack Del Rio — Handling the QB situation could define his season, future in Jacksonville.

22. Chan Gailey — No one ever has (wisely) questioned his offensive acumen.

23. Gary Kubiak — Can he be great for one season? He might have to be.

24. Steve Spagnuolo — Garners great respect league-wide for his defensive schemes.

25. Jim Schwartz — Teaching his team to close out games was key development last season.

26. Jason Garrett — Followed Coach K in February to learn how a master runs his program.

27. Leslie Frazier — Win over Philly probably tipped scales for team to retain him as coach.

28. Ron Rivera — Finally gets his chance as Panthers try to build the Steelers South.

29. Jim Harbaugh — One of the more professional-appearing college coaches in some time.

30. Hue Jackson — In Oakland, dealing with Al Davis can be part of the coaching challenge.

31. Mike Munchak — Expect Titans to look a lot like the Jeff Fisher-run outfit.

32. Pat Shurmur — Comes with the most questions of any other first-year head coach.

Did you know that John Fox has won the exact same number of Super Bowls as Todd Haley? That would be zero. What the fuck has Fox ever done, really? For his career, Fox is 2 games over .500 as a HC.

CAR 2002 7 9
CAR 2003 11 5 Lost to New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
CAR 2004 7 9

CAR 2006 8 8
CAR 2007 7 9
CAR 2008 12 4 Lost to Arizona Cardinals in NFC Divisonal Game.

The amazing thing to me is all the "Haley wants control" bullshit.

No one has ever made a big deal of the fact that Andy Reid, Mike McCarthy or Jon Gruden want/ed control, and in Gruden's case, he was never the play caller before taking over the Raiders.

The difference is those guys have proven they can run an offense that doesn't suck. This year will be a very telling one about Haley IMO.

Yeah, because Zona's offense sucked balls when he was there.

They hadn't proven it before they proved it, and it was never an issue anyone discussed in their first couple of seasons as they have with Haley.

And that was the original point.

Though I would argue that Reid is the most overrated coach ever, next to Tony Dungy.

Make all the gay icons you want but theres a big difference between being a HC and calling the plays than just being the OC. We saw this in 2009.

As milkman said, the other coaches had not proven it before they proved it either.
In 2009 we saw a 2-14 team completely void of talent have trouble on offense. Things have changed.

I don't care if this is a troll thread or not. It's pretty hilarious that you take a coach who had the biggest turnaround in franchise history and put him at 19 below coaches who haven't even coached for their current team yet. This has homer written all over it. Worthless article and thread.

"12. John Fox — Had string of .500-ish teams in Carolina, but rebuilding Broncos could use that."

Are they seriously implying that Fox is rated this high because he might be able to get the donks back to .500?

Actually with the way they've drafted, and state of their run defense, that would be quite a miracle.

06-12-2011, 06:42 PM
What has Jim Caldwell done except stand there and watch Tom Moore, Peyton Manning and Larry Coyer coach his team?

Lol at John Fox being the 12th best coach in the league. If you go 1-15, there's no fucking way you should even be in the discussion for the top 25.

Brock
06-12-2011, 06:48 PM
I'd put Caldwell in the bottom 3. He sucks.

milkman
06-12-2011, 06:54 PM
Bottom line, the best coaches all have the best QBs, with a couple of exceptions.

The fact that Jim Caldwell is rated so low, when he has the QB widely considered the the one of the top 2 QBs is an indictment of how really bad he is.

The fact that Rex Ryan broke into the top 10 in spite of Sanchez, is exactly the opposite.

The funny thing about Caldwell is he was more successful than our whole franchise was the last 15 years or so and took a team to the playoffs this year that was battered. I don't really get the Caldwell hate.

It's not really hate, it's just the unanimous acknowledgement the he doesn't really do shit, except stand there.
Todd Haley took over a 2-14 team, got them in shape, coached up it's "stars", got way more out of it's players than the former coach was even close to getting out of them, and got them into the playoffs in 2 years. Haley could coach circles around Caldwell's ass, the same way Sean Peyton did, yet is ranked way lower.

Haley is still unproven as hell ... doesn't really matter where he's ranked right now.

He couldn't make it work with Weis and therefore people will doubt. If Haley succeed this year then everyone will forget about it. If the Chiefs offense struggles this year then everyone will continue to bring up Weis/control.
