View Full Version : Music Best Song Remake Ever?

In my experience most folks don’t appreciate song remakes, especially if it’s a remake of an already good song (like Lenny Kravitz - American Woman or Sammy Hagar – Take Another Piece of My Heart). I find that I usually follow that mold, don’t mess with it if it ain’t broke. I do however appreciate the afore mentioned remakes more so than their predecessors. I used to think Hagar remade Joplin’s Big Brother & the Holding Co version before learning that Joplin’s band themselves remade Erma Franklins original. There’s hit songs out there that are remakes of failed originals and people just don’t know it. Then there’s the remakes of great songs (like Wingers Purple Haze remake….WTF! How DARE YOU!). Anyways, heard this song the other day and every time I hear it I think it must be the best remake ever. I doubt most people even know it is a remake. I only know ‘cause I dig the Boss. Originally recorded by Springsteen in 73 – did not hit the charts at all (and kinda sucked!). Remake went #1 in 77. Way different than the original.

Indeed. They have been developing it for years. I saw them do part of it at a NYE show back in either 01 or 02, but they only did the middle section. Over the years they have expanded it, but this last NYE here in STL, they absolutely rocked it. There are some crappy cell phone you tube vids of it, and I'm sure the show is available for download at their site.

You mention a Springsteen remake and another jumped to mind, Pink Cadillac by Natalie Cole. Also on the subject of remakes it is usually a case of it was not as good or I like it a little better. Whitney Houston's remake of Dolly Parton's I will always love you was a case of a huge improvement. Dolly released the song twice and it went number 1 in country charts both times which is impressive that the same artist could pull this off twice with the same song. It did not fair well as a crossover song either time. Houston's version crushed the charts world wide and garnered her several awards and it be argued it is the greatest remake of all time~

I think Big Head Todd redid "Tangerine" by Zeppelin and that's always been a very well done cover in my book.

IAnd half of Zepp songs are remakes of old blues diddys.

OK, Zep I and II had a lot of remakes of old Blues diddy', I admit that. But they had six other studio albums (one of which was a double) after that with only a few bluesy songs. "Half their songs" is quite an exaggeration. I don't hear much blues influence at all in "Stairway to Heaven", "No Quarter", "Achille's Last Stand", "Kashmir" or any of their best post Zep II stuff.

Jimi Hendrix: All along the Watchtower. F'ing great song.

Originally done by Bob Dylan.

It's funny, even Trent Reznor said he likes Johnnys version better.

Do you have a link to Reznor saying this?

To start, I will say I am a NIN fanatic. My favorite band of all time.

I have read many Reznor interviews pertaining to his opinion of Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. I remember reading an interview where he said his initial feelings about Cash's version were somewhat negative, but when he thought about it a little bit more, he thought it was neat how different songs can have different deep-seeded meanings to different people. He also mentioned something about how he considered it a huge compliment having one of his songs covered by someone who is considered legendary in music like Cash.

Never have I read anywhere that Reznor likes Cash's version better than his own. And he shouldn't like Cash's version better than his own...because it's not nearly as good. Trent Reznor bared his soul to the fullest extent in that song and while Cash's version is touching, I don't consider it any more than a tribute to Trent Reznor's brilliant song....as mentioned above, a huge compliment to Reznor from Cash.

Trent Reznor has confessed that originally he was angry that Johnny Cash had covered this, as it was such a personal song to him. However, once he heard Cash's heart-wrenching version and saw the poignant video, he changed his tune.
Reznor recalled to The Sun Newspaper August 1st 2008: "The Cash thing was a couple of years into being clean I was very unsure of myself. Did I have anything to say? Could I still write music? Did anyone still care? I'd been out of the limelight for a while. I'd put the brakes on everything to try to get my life in order, to try to get healthy and stay alive. I'd been friends with Rick Rubin for several years. He called me to ask how I'd feel if Johnny Cash covered Hurt. I said I'd be very flattered but was given no indication it would actually be recorded. Two weeks went by. Then I got a CD in the post. I listened to it and it was very strange. It was this other person inhabiting my most personal song. I'd known where I was when I wrote it. I know what I was thinking about. I know how I felt. Hearing it was like someone kissing your girlfriend. It felt invasive."
It was when Reznor finally saw the video that his attitude changed. He continued: "It really, really made sense and I thought what a powerful piece of art. I never got to meet Johnny but I'm happy I contributed the way I did. It felt like a warm hug. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I highly recommend checking it out. I have goose bumps right now thinking about it."
On January 29, 2007 Johnny Cash's rendition of this song was voted the best ever cover version in a poll by BBC 6 Music. It got twice as many votes as other famous covers such as Jimi Hendrix' "All Along The Watchtower (http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2325)" and Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends (http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=454)." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for above 2)

I totally forgot about this - "Tainted Love" was originally by someone names Gloria Jones back in the 60's somewhere, and Soft Cell fused it with "Where Did Our Love Go". Good call.

Not sure if you'd count this as a remake since it's still technically Black Sabbath, but I love this version with Halford singing Dio's part after Dio fell sick.

So many of my friends play Johnny's version and hold it in high artistic esteem. To me when he sings the lyrics "I hurt myself today", I always picture an elderly dude on the ground in a 'Help me I can't get up' position. Cash's version just makes me laugh.
