Myra Kraft, wife of Patriots owner, dies

Myra Kraft, wife of Patriots owner Robert Kraft, has died after a “courageous battle with cancer,” the team announced this morning in a statement. She was 68.

The Patriots released the following on Myra Kraft, who had not been seen at her husband’s side at recent events due to her illness: “Words cannot express the deep sorrow that we feel in learning of the passing of Myra Hiatt Kraft. Myra passed away early this morning after a courageous battle with cancer. We are all heartbroken. The global philanthropic community and the New England Patriots family have suffered a great loss.”

Kraft was the president and director of the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation. She served on the boards of directors of the American Repertory Theatre and United Way of Massachusetts Bay, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston and Brandeis University.

Last month, the Patriots owner got emotional talking about his wife and her volunteering efforts during the “Community MVPs” banquet at Gillette Stadium, an event that was a particular favorite of the couple.

“My wife has been the No. 1 volunteer in New England,” Kraft said, choking back tears. “She taught me a lot about this.”

It’s been a difficult time for Kraft, who has been dealing with his wife’s illness, while also playing a key role in the NFL negotiations.

Current and former Patriots players took to Twitter to express their condolences.

Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork tweeted, “... myra was a wonderful woman who my wife and I loved dearly.”

Former Patriots fullback Heath Evans tweeted, “What made Myra Kraft special? Strong but Tender-hearted/Proud but Humble/Bold but Soft-spoken/Extremely blessed but lived to be a blessing.”

Said former Patriots safety Lawyer Milloy: “I’m truly heartbroken today. Myra Kraft has passed away. With my Brisk departure from Boston, she is the one person that I regret not saying goodbye too. As a young player/man she was a gr8 example of how a woman stands beside, not behind, a man of power!”

During the past season, the Patriots dedicated their home games to a “Kick Cancer” awareness campaign featuring an awareness of different cancers.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Temple Emanuel in Newton.

Myra was a great figure in the greater Boston area, extremely philanthropic and very well regarded. A huge loss. Very sad news.

That's tough. It's very awesome to read of a person that has everything but strives to help others. It's no longer a common thing in today's me first society. A woman of this caliber is a loss whatever her station in life.

my general rule of thumb is if someone dies as a result of a condition, or diease etc, then that's unfortunate/sad etc, may they RIP.

if they're dead beacuse they're a dumbass / doing something stupid that resulted in their death, then it's fine.

And in this case, not only did Myra Kraft have cancer, she was an exceptional human being. She'll be missed.

Some fuckstick that gets electrocuted trying to steal copper will certainly NOT be missed.

A corrolary that I've noticed (and don't necessarily agree with) is that it's occasionally OK around here to make jokes about someone's injury/death if 1) that person is pretty much a John/Jane Smith and 2) the event is somehow humorous. A perfect example would be the girl who lost a foot on a Six Flags ride.

This isn't gonna hold Robert Kraft up from the meetings tomorrow is it? Supposed to ratify the CBA this week you know.
