View Full Version : ChiefsPlanet WTF Daface? "This forum requires that you wait 60 seconds between searches."

You serious? You expect me to wait that long? You got some splainin' to do.

Yes, I'm joking. I just thought it was a little odd that there's a 60 second buffer between searches. What does that safeguard against? I'm not complaining, I'm genuinely asking

I think that's a vBulletin thing in general, because it does that on all the vBulletin sites I've been to.

I'm guessing the purpose is to prevent a denial of service attack by repeated searches from a handful of fake user ids.

I don't need to wait 60 seconds on at least one vBulletin site I go to. Normally it doesn't matter, but it sucks when you make a typo and have to live with the shame for 60 seconds.

DaFeces is blatantly not responding to this issue. How dare he not be available from 9am to 1pm on a Sunday. Total disregard for his responsibilities. If I were Rainman, CEO of Sandbox Simulations, I'd fire him.

Yep. A single search puts about as much of a load on the server as 200-300 users browsing threads. vBulletin's search function just plain sucks, and that's all there is to it. So, in order to minimize the impact, we limit how quickly people can do searches.

This server could probably handle more frequent searches OK for now, but it'll start croaking like the last one did eventually, so no need to bring on the problems any sooner than we have to.

Eh, it really doesn't matter as long as you don't do it during a game when the server's already stressed. This server is man enough to handle most of what we'll throw at it for the next year or two anyway.

Does vBulletin have a way you can build an index for the search function to go off of rather than the live database? I noticed searches were slowing down my SMF site and I utilized that feature.

If I ever leave forever, the 60-second delay will be the reason. I can't tell you how many times I'll do a search for something like "gladiatorial matches" and I mistype it and accidentally search for "nipples", and then I have to sit around and waste sixty seconds after I correct it.

I'll give them the same weapons, but DaFace only gets to use his once every sixty seconds.

Yes, but we're already using it. Our index alone is a 2GB file.

Bring it on. I'll use my wits and cunning to force them to shoot themselves in the face with the flame thrower.

Eh, technically it's an option, but upgrading the server every couple years works just fine. We're in much better shape on this one just because we're on a 64-bit OS that can put the entire index into RAM. The old one started croaking primarily because our index was bigger than MySQL's RAM allocation.

This is all Kirstie Tynes fault because she gets on here and seaches her own name constantly. I think we should sue her and make her pay for an entire new server.
