Chiefs agreed to terms with C Casey Wiegmann on a one-year contract.
Two other clubs showed interest, but Wiegmann was only going to play if the Chiefs wanted him back. His return should keep second-round pick Rodney Hudson, a college guard the club is converting to center, on the bench for his rookie season. Wiegmann stabilizes a Chiefs offensive line that returns all five starters. He's likely to man the pivot spot in Week 1.

Yes, I know it's in the FA thread, but that thing is fucking huge. Chiefs news deserves separate threads.

Will be great to have Wiegmann around to help mentor Hudson.

Great news, anyone pining for a rookie to take the reins day one isnt thinking clearly IMO.

Casey will help get things off to a strong start.

If this had been a normal offseason Hudson would have had plenty of time to be ready to take the #1 spot from Casey by week 1 IMO. However given the lockout creating a unique learning curve for our rookies this year, you couldn't ask for a better situation to arise. Welcome back Casey and good luck this season!! :thumb:

Hopefully it's a transition and Hudson will be playing around midyear when Wiegmann traditionally starts to decline.

Here's hoping he's great for us...for 8 weeks or so.

I love having him around for the first half of the season, but if Hudson hasn't taken over by week 12, he's not progressing as well as I'd hoped he would.

Let him play as long as he wants to as long as his production doesn't slip. There are certain guys around the league (OL especially) that just don't age and he happens to be one of them. For some people, age is just a number.

His production slipped markedly as last season progressed.

Our performance in short-yardage situations faltered in large part due to Weighman's decline as he tired last season. He simply couldn't get the leg-drive or interior push that he needed to be a solid interior presence past week 10(ish).

I'm confident that he can give us some very strong production for the first half of the season. But as the grind of the season sets in, those legs are going to get heavier and heavier and we're going to need Hudson to be able to step up.

Good news imo. Let Hudson learn from CW and give him some time to get used to playing at the "next" level.

I think Wiegman's play might actually improve after death. Zombies are persistent bastards.

Hopefully about the time of the season that Wiegmann gets worn down and loses too much weight the rookie will be ready to take over.

I would rather go with Hudson to start the year. If Casey starts, I don't see him getting pulled unless he gets hurt. Haley isn't going to bench a veteran leader and mess with the continuity on the line.

Center is not usually a position you want a rookie starting unless you have a veteran guard making the line calls.

I don't care how it gets worked out. I just don't want to see Casey getting blown up late in the year in our most important games.

I'd rather have the rookie go through his growing pains early and progress throughout the season.

There's going to be gome growing pains when he starts regardless. Center is one of the positions where "I fear change" - Garth

I'm not so sure about that. C quarterbacks the line. Continuity and chemistry are just as important as leverage and technique in the trenches.

Chiefs' Casey Wiegmann Gets A Pay Raise

Employees of the Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/kansas-city-chiefs) got a pay raise after the NFL lockout (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2011/7/25/2293317/kansas-city-chiefs-reimburse-employees) ended and so did C Casey Wiegmann (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2412/casey-wiegmann). The 37-year old center got a bump in pay this season to the tune of a half million bucks.
Adam Caplan of FOX Sports (http://twitter.com/caplannfl/statuses/10396999606) reports Wiegmann received $2.5 million on his one-year deal with the Chiefs. His one-year contract last year was worth just $2 million. The deal won't become official until he can sign on Friday night at 5:00 p.m. (Arrowhead time).

The lockout probably didn't hurt his leverage. No offseason workouts means the coaching staff probably wanted to go with a proven option they know will work. For the Chiefs, that's Wiegmann.
So, if you look at it this way: 37-year old Wiegmann is worth more than 36-year old Wiegmann. Weird how that works out.
