I saw this on the news last night. They seemed confident they'd find him as of the interviews on the 10 o'clock last night.

That's tough, best wishes.

This is kind of fucked up, but my brother and I drove out there to look at the flood yesterday early afternoon by big lake (118 and 111), and we drove up on a white HP truck with a boat attached behind it. It was really weird to us at the moment since nobody was around, but his driver side doors on his truck were still open. I thought he might be up in front of his truck dealing with a call from nature or over on the other side of the highway leading to Big Lake talking with some people that had a boat and jetski in the water there.

The truck was parked right where the water was rushing over the road pretty fast too. I commented on how fast the current was there and how fucked the highway was going to be.

We must have driven up on it before it was known he was missing because on our way back to town two or three HP cars went flying passed us on there way out there.

Best of luck to your friend, man. I hope they find him safe hanging out wet somewhere.

edit:

After reading this article (http://www.nbcactionnews.com/dpp/news/local_news/Missouri-Water-Patrol-trooper,-dog-missing) I feel a little more freaked out. We were out there around 3pm which is when he was discovered missing. I am guessing that is when the HP units arrived after we left.

yes that was his truck. absolutely. his family are sitting there at that very spot right now waiting for news.
Troopers THINK that he fell in vs an original hypothesis that he went in after his dog Reed (which would be suicide from what family members tell me the current is doing right there). They think that part of the road gave way and he went in. Reed is trained to go in after him to help. So he went. They see dog footprints but no human footprints so they think he fell. They do not think he went in after Reed because he is trained to drop his gun belt before entering the water and there is no gunbelt. Since they can’t find him they suspected the current has trapped him and Reed in pockets under the road. They are bringing in sand bags to try to deflect the current so divers can go down. It’s bad. I keep stupidly hoping he’s downstream waiting.

I'm sorry to hear that, man. I know there is nothing I could have done at the time I was there, but I feel kind of shitty. I imagine the people across the highway feel especially shitty. Major bummer and its a shit way to go. Best wishes to his family and friends.

from what I'm being told about the current I don't think you could have done anything if you'da seen him go in. you were there. it's that bad?

from what I'm being told about the current I don't think you could have done anything if you'da seen him go in. you were there. it's that bad?

I've seen several floods around here, and never current like this. It is legitimately gushing or "ramping" over the roadway where his truck was. The highway starts a banked turn right where he parked and all the water is forcing its way over the roadway from left to right. I imagine what has happened is that with the road banked like that most of the dirt/soil has washed out from under it. I could see a ways down the road where some of the road has already collapsed or washed away. So their hypothesis that he stood on a piece of road that gave way is probably quite accurate.

Heading back up to mound city again after work today. A trooper told me yesterday that he’s seen stranger things than finding a man alive after three days. On the face of it makes good sense, but realistically…if he’s alive this is gonna make one heck of a movie of the week. You never know. I keep throwing prayers out for the family, but also for him. It ain’t over til it’s over. Thanks so much CP folks for the thoughts, prayers and well wishes. Please don’t stop just yet.

He received a medal of valor for saving that woman. She was thrown from her boat during a bad storm waves were huge some say 5 to 6 feet. you don't get medals for finding/ pulling childrens bodies from the water but in my mind that is heroic as well I couldn't do it

Went to the “funeral” on Wednesday. They never found him but buried his cremated canine partner Reed in his coffin along with personal items from the family. Some day, if they find him, he will be placed with Reed. My family is a military family and I’ve been to a few military funerals in my time. I’ve never seen anything like this. There were over 300 officers from at least four different states in attendance. I can’t even guess at the number of police motorcycles and vehicles involved in the procession. Service was in Liberty and the procession drove to Knob Noster for the burial. Me and Freddie are Knob Noster Panthers….we ain’t the only ones here in CP. As amazing as it was, as many hair raising moments as there were, nothing shocked me more than pulling into Knob Noster, just getting ready to turn off the highway…..and the Stealth Bomber flies directly over the head of the procession. Wow! Just wow! One more time.....WOW!
I’ve never personally seen such a display of strength as was shown by Freddies immediate family. Teresa and his three kids are amazing. The footprints Freddie left behind in this world are huge. He touched so many lives. I’m proud to call him friend. I wish I’d have seen him more in recent years. Life gets so busy. Tomorrow is not certain.
Thanks Freddie for the friendship and memories. Thanks for upping the ante into the stratosphere on your funeral. Mine (ours) is just plain gonna suck in comparison! It’s all good. We Knob Nosterites talked about this and don’t be surprised if when the next of us goes….one of us flies a cheap little model airplane over the head of the procession. I know you'd get a kick out of that. It would be epic.
I love you man.

Yeah like when Freddie was gonna punt at Warrrensburg (our nemesis) and Jay snapped the ball over his head into the endzone. Freddie was so mad he kicked the goal post and broke his foot. He never lived that one down.

Family and friends will have a little informal get together and reunite Freddie with his partner Reed who awaits him in the big Knob. a sad ending yes...but thank God it HAS ended. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to put myself in Theresa's shoes wondering where the love of my life is. I cannot imagine... Theresa said last night on the news something to the effect of...."Your mind knows what probably happened and that it's over...but your heart keeps thinking there's a chance he could walk through that door, so now that's gone and we can try to move on." Something like that...I worded it poorly I'm sure....point being that they don't have to wonder anymore.
This is a cool place. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers everyone. Really. Maybe it helped the family be just that much stronger.....I think it did. The strength of Theresa and those three kids is just off the charts.
Awesome family. You did good Freddie. Rest in peace bro.

Fallen trooper honored by Missouri House Kim Norvell

CommentsPrint FriendlyThe Missouri House honored Trooper Fred Guthrie Jr. and his family Tuesday in a short ceremony.

Mr. Guthrie was killed in the 2011 flood when he and his K-9 partner, Reed, were swept away by swift floodwaters in Holt County.

A resolution was presented on the House floor to Mr. Guthrie’s wife, Teresa, and his daughter, Amber, by Rep. Nick Marshall, R-Platte City.

“It’s with great honor and pleasure that I present this special resolution,” Mr. Marshall said. “Mr. Speaker, no greater gift can be given than that a man lays down his life for a friend. And certainly no greater sacrifice can be made by a trooper than offering up his own life to serve and protect his community.”

Mr. Marshall outlined how the fallen trooper’s 17-year career can teach anyone a lesson in service and sacrifice, as he was dedicated to various aspects of the job: as a certified firearms instructor, a K-9 handler and a member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s SWAT team. Mr. Guthrie also received numerous recognitions for his service, including Highway Patrol employee of the month, Missouri state employee of the month and the Missouri Medal of Valor.

“He has become an everlasting testament to all that true greatness comes through service,” Mr. Marshall said. “It’s something we can be reminded of daily in service to our state.”

Also Tuesday, the House Transportation Committee approved a bill that would rename the portion of Interstate 29 in Platte County as “Trooper Fred F. Guthrie Jr. Memorial Highway.” The stretch of interstate would reach from Missouri Highway 273/Missouri Highway 371 north to the intersection of State Route U/State Route E.

According to the text of the bill, sponsored by Mr. Marshall and Rep. Galen Higdon, R-St. Joseph, the costs for the designation will be paid for in full by a private donation.
