49ers e-mail every team, trying to trade Taylor*Mays

The San Francisco 49ers want to trade safety Taylor Mays, and they want every NFL team to know he’s available.

Adam Schefter reported this afternoon that the 49ers sent out an e-mail to every team in the league to try to trade Mays. One front office of another team told Schefter it has never seen a team just mass e-mail a trade availability like that.

It would be interesting to know whether the Seahawks have any interest, considering that Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was Mays’ coach at USC. Mays was furious at Carroll last year when the Seahawks didn’t draft him.

The 49ers drafted Mays in the second round last year, No. 49 overall, and he played in 16 games, starting six. But the new regime apparently isn’t as high on Mays as the old regime in San Francisco was, and after signing safety Madieu Williams, the 49ers apparently view Mays as expendable.


It will be interesting to see if they go the Craigslist, Ebay route if this doesn't work. Mecca has got to be cringing. I do think Mays with Berry would be interesting.

There is a lot of debate at the moment as to whether the Rams will take Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong suh or take a quarterback at this pick.

For one, we know head coach Steve Spanunolo is a defensive guy. The Rams could use an elite talent like Suh on their defense since they have had serious problems generating pressure and plugging the run. However, think about this Rams fans, if it wasn't for the contract of Marc Bulger, wouldn't you have rather drafted quarterbacks Matt Ryan or Mark Sanchez when you have had the chance? The Rams need a franchise quarterback and if they don't get a quarterback who can help them win, then they will never ever be a consistent threat in the NFC West; I could really care less how good their defensive line is.

Clausen is one of the most polished quarterbacks to enter the NFL Draft since Peyton Manning, and he is certainly, in my opinion, is one of the most NFL-ready underclassmen (in terms of QBs) in NFL Draft history. If you don't want Clausen, then no quarterback will EVER be good enough for this team.

After sending out an e-mail to all 31 teams offering 2010 second-round pick Taylor Mays, the 49ers finally found a taker in the Bengals. The compensation was undisclosed when the deal was made. And so most of us simply forgot about the question of what the Niners got and moved on.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com shared with PFT Live on Wednesday that the Bengals gave up a seventh-round draft choice.

In 2013.

Maiocco explained that Mays was hand picked by former head coach Mike Singletary, and that the new regime simply decided that Mays can’t play.

Given what the Bengals surrendered for Mays, most other teams decided that, too. The Bears reportedly made an offer that the Niners opted not to accept. (Maybe the Bears offered an eighth-round choice in 2013.) Singletary’s new team, the Vikings, could use some safety help, but they didn’t bite, either.

And Pete Carroll, who supposedly led Mays to believe that a first-round pick would be used on the former Trojan last year, wasn’t interested. Mays will get to personally thank Carroll for that second slap in the face on October 30.

If Mays is still a member of the Bengals by then.

We’ll bet you a ninth-round choice in the 2013 draft that he isn’t.

I honestly don't remember anyone wanting Mays with the #5, I think pretty much everyone but sacc was on the Berry bandwagon. There were a lot of people that would have taken Mays in the 2nd though.

Yeah I just took a look at the thread you bumped. Plenty of "I'd be fine with Mays in the first" posts. I thought that started to die down as we got closer to the draft, but maybe I stopped reading those posts.

I know I was a Mays defender during that college season. I read a lot on the scheme he played in and the hype on how he can pack on muscle and keep his speed, but as the draft got closer, I was set on Berry. Maybe Mays should add some weight and try LBer :)
