[Ed. Note: It's now official from the mother ship (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/article-2/CHIEFS-AWARDED-K-TODD-CARTER-VIA-WAIVERS-SIGN-WR-KEARY-COLBERT-/ebfa5616-3b19-4c6f-8708-197381574e56). -Matt Conner]

The Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/kansas-city-chiefs) have reportedly signed WR Keary Colbert (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2145/keary-colbert), according to multiple reports (http://twitter.com/#%21/lanceveeser/status/101445860587610113) on Twitter. Apparently, he's already been given a uniform (No. 84) and started training camp at tonight's practice under the lights.

Coming out of USC in 2004, Colbert was a second round pick by the Carolina Panthers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/carolina-panthers). His best season statistically was by far his 2004 rookie year, when he caught 47 passes for 754 yards and five touchdowns. Since that season though, Colbert has essentially been jumping form team to team.
He's played for the Panthers, Seahawks (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/seattle-seahawks), Broncos (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/denver-broncos), Lions (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/detroit-lions) and a couple of UFL teams, most recently signing with the Sacramento franchise just two months ago. One of the last notes we have on him playing in the NFL comes from Pride of Detroit way back in 2009. Sean Yuille said (http://www.prideofdetroit.com/2009/10/27/1103068/tuesday-notes-rams-will-be-down), "Keary Colbert is headed to the UFL. Based on his play in the preseason, that is probably a better place for him than the NFL."

By my count, Keary Colbert makes the 13th wide receiver on the Kansas City Chiefs 2011 preseason roster and the 85th overall. The Kansas City Chiefs are already fairly deep at wide receiver, at least in the starting ranks. The latest Chiefs depth (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2011/8/9/2352951/kansas-city-chiefs-depth-chart) chart doesn't show much room for another wide receiver to make inroads. I'd put Colbert's chances of making the final 53-man roster at 50/50, at best.

Note that we also signed K Todd Carter. Claimed him off waivers. Apparently he's a kickoff specialist. If he can consistently boot it deep on kickoffs, that would work. Sucks to spend a roster spot on that but field position is critical and we perennially suck at kickoffs.

He's just a camp leg. He won't make the 53.

Very strange fodder.

The only thing I can think of is our receivers have stiff hammys from the lack of offseason work, and he's just another body to throw at.

How many times do we have to go over this? They need bodies for Preseason games. Somebody has to play in the 2nd half of those 4 games, and its not going to be starters for the most part.

Chiefs signed WR Keary Colbert, formerly of the Sacramento Lions.
Colbert began the year on the Lions' UFL roster after spending the 2010 season as the USC Trojans' assistant tight ends coach. Once a promising-looking prospect defeating single-team coverage opposite Steve Smith in Carolina, Colbert hasn't been able to separate from defensive backs since 2004.

I got it.

They wanted someone that Donald Washington could cover in camp.

We had 12 bodies before him.

Minus what, 3?

9 Wr's to share 3 quarters of 3 and out football? Yeah.....once again he was NOT a need.

Who's bitching? Im just saying the signing doesn't make any sense. Are Opinions not allowed on CP anymore or something?

Is this not a point of discussion?

Meh. He sucks. And it's not like we need another WR body when we have young talent like Tucker, Horne, Paul, and that one white guy. Not that it matters, but I don't understand the signing.

The point. I don't understand the point of the signing. What does he bring to the team that could help in any way, shape, or form.

He only steals play time from the young guys. That's the issue I have with it. Not that any of those receivers I named will be stars, but I'd rather them have the time on the field than a washed up, never was.

Well, Colbert finally comes to KC. There were a lot of people that freaked when the Chiefs took Bigfoot over Colbert in '04. Both were awful picks in hindsight.
