If you’re wondering why Michael Vick chose to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles out of prison instead of a team where he would have had a chance to start, it’s because the NFL reportedly influenced his decision. In an interview conducted for GQ (http://www.gq.com/sports/profiles/201109/michael-vick-gq-september-2011-interview), Vick tells Will Leitch that he didn’t want to sign with the Eagles as a third-string quarterback.
“I think I can say this now, because it’s not going to hurt anybody’s feelings, and it’s the truth… I didn’t want to come to Philadelphia. Being the third-team quarterback is nothing to smile about. Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options.”
Those two teams wanted him and would’ve allowed him to start, but after meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell and other reps from the NFL, Vick was convinced—and granted league approval—to sign with Philly. “And I commend and thank them, because they put me in the right situation.”
With those comments, Vick will have ticked off at least two fan bases, and his words should incense the fans, 31 other owners, and the NFLPA. FOXSports.com reported the Bengals offered Vick a two-year contract after he was released from prison. Buffalo had just brought in Terrell Owens and wanted Vick too (http://larrybrownsports.com/football/michael-vick-signs-2year-deal-eagles/8717). Clearly Goodell did not want him starting immediately after prison and directed him to the Eagles which is nothing short of fixing the league.

You may recall that Vick’s suspension was conditionally lifted by Goodell after the prison release. He was allowed to practice and play in the final two preseason games, but it took Goodell some time to clear him to play in regular season games. Even if Goodell wanted to ease Vick back into the league, it was wrong to steer him towards one team over the other. You can’t arrange where players go; you can’t fix the league. Granted, Philly has been a great situation for Mike and has allowed him to blossom, but are you telling me the Bengals and Bills wouldn’t be looking at the playoffs if they had him at quarterback?

This is a serious charge against the NFL. Goodell must respond and explain what happened. I’ll bet Vick doesn’t even realize what he unveiled.

I read this earlier, but it's kind of vague. His quote doesn't actually say Goodell sold him on Philly. It says, at one point, he was more interested in Cinci and Buffalo, but after meeting with Goodell and other people he decided on Philly.
It could be that Goodell sold him on Philly, or it could have been that Goodell sat down with him, asked him what his plans were, and had a league rep lay out the pros and cons of each market. Then, after looking at it that way, Vick decided to choose Philly.
It doesn't necessarily say Goodell sold Vick. I would think if he had used more direct language like, "Goodell thought Philly was the best fit for me," or, "Goodell told me not to start right away, and lay low," they would have used that quote. The quote they chose to use is fairly weak language, so it makes me a little skeptical.

acknowledging blaise's good point, this should be investigated to determine what really happened. if the allegations are true, goodell should be fired imediately. this is an extremely serious allegation that the commissioner is favoring certain teams in the free agent market.

Yes, I agree. If he steered him to a market and away from another, that's unacceptable. The Bills are already in fear of losing the team because their market is small and their stadium old. If they could have had Vick it could have turned out to be a franchise changing move.

Maybe he figured Andy Reid has made even bad QB's look good so no better place to get the Michael Vick Hype and Money Machine going again for the NFL's sake.

And yes, if true Goodell should be fired. Can't imagine why Vick would just make it up. Nothing do gain for him to lie about this.

If I was the commish Vick would have had to set out at leaset another year. He's back to being one of the main faces of the NFL and I really didn't want to have a criminal be the face of my favorite sports league. Goodell probably didn't want him to be the face of the league either and that's why he promoted Vick going to a team where he would start out as a backup. Didn't work out though.

It doesn't seem to me that there was anything to gain by mentioning it at all.

100% agree.

He should be completely out of the process and it questions the integrity of the whole process.

Complete bullshit.

I heard from a buddy of mine who's second cousin's wife delivers coffee to the NFL HQ that Vick wanted to sign with the Chiefs as well because they were rebuilding but Goodell wouldn't allow it.
The reason was that the whole league is against KC being good enough to go to the SB because TV ratings would be low. So, there you go. CONSPIRACY!
