Maybe it was the change in practice time. Maybe it was something sprinkled into his Cheerios. But Todd Haley was all fired up Tuesday morning as he put the Chiefs through their only practice of the day.

Haley’s voice could be heard from two football fields away and most of the time the head coach was directing his comments to his offense. That unit had another tough day against the Chiefs defense.

“Come on offense, show a little fight,” Haley said at one point.

But fight was not evident during most of the 100-minute session from the offense. In a goal line period, the No. 1 offense had five snaps to get the ball in the end zone and scored only one the last one, when RB Jackie Battle leaped over the right side of the offensive line. The other four plays produced minimal yardage.

One update of not on the injury front, starting CB Brandon Flowers was in the rehab area and not practicing. Flowers limped off the field on Monday, but indicated in the locker room after practice it was nothing serious. On Tuesday, he spent his time walking up and down the rehab field and not much else.

More observations from Tuesday morning’s session:

– Maybe it was just wrapped differently than on Sunday, but WR Jonathan Baldwin’s right wrist was not wrapped up in a cast like it has been in earlier practices. On Tuesday, he appeared to be wearing a brace on his lower right arm, with the thumb wrapped up tightly. He rode the stationary bike and was back to pulling small weighted sled up and down the field.

– The other player not practicing were LB Gabe Miller (hamstring), LB Eric Bakhtiari (head), C/G Darryl Harris (knee), OT Ryan O’Callaghan (unknown), TE Jake O’Connell (ankle) and NT Anthony Toribio (knee). Miller and O’Connell were not on the field at all.

– WR Steve Breaston worked about half the practice and then went to the rehab area. He continues to rehab an off-season procedure.

– OT Jared Gaither was dressed and was part of practice, but he did not take any snaps with the offense.

– The Chiefs offense has worked hard on the play-action passing game this week. Obviously, with the unit’s ability to run the ball it’s an area that could produce big yardage for QB Matt Cassel.

– WR Dwayne Bowe had a dropped pass in team work and that’s two days in a row when he’s had chances to make catches but fell short. It’s worth mentioning because in St. Joe practices, Bowe caught everything thrown his way.

– All through this training camp, QB Matt Cassel has been getting rid of the football when he can’t find anyone open. Expect to see more passes from him that end up in the first row of the stadium seats. If he’s not comfortable with his options, he’s throwing foul balls that won’t land for interceptions.

– Second and third stringers got a chance for a few extra snaps and drills at the end of practice. While the first teamers were doing conditioning runs, the backup were trying to put yet another performance on tape that would help the coaches evaluating their play, in practice and games.

Is Jared Gaither ever going to take part in practice or game?

Can't make the team from the sidelines.

Getting a little concerned about this guy.
