The roster shuffle for the Bengals continued on Sunday as they claimed three players off waivers, headlined by WR/KR Brandon Tate. They also claimed OG/C Mike McGlynn and TE Mickey Shuler Jr. With the acquisition of those three, the team waived WR/PR Quan Cosby, TE Chase Coffman and C Reggie Stephens.

Tate, who is entering his third year, returned two kicks for touchdowns last year for New England including a 97-yarder in the opener against the Bengals last year.

However the 2009 third-round pick did not develop as well as the Patriots had hoped. He was the team’s third receiver last year and had 24 catches for 432 yards and three touchdowns.

“I’m ready to move on and get to work with the Bengals,” Tate said.
McGlynn, a fourth-year player, started 16 games at center for the Eagles last year but began the season third string behind Jamaal Jackson and former UC standout Jason Kelce, who was drafted in the sixth round and won the job.

Last year, McGlynn took over the starting spot when Jackson suffered a season-ending triceps injury in the opener.

Shuler, who is entering his second season, played in six games with two starts for Miami last year and had two catches for 44 yards.

The release of Cosby is a mild surprise. In two years he had averaged 10.0 yards on 70 punt returns to become the team’s all-team leader in return average. In 110 opportunities (70 returns and 40 fair catches) he went without a lost muff or fumble. He also was used on kick and punt coverage teams and in 2009 had three key blocks on Bernard Scott’s kickoff return for a touchdown at Pittsburgh.

With Cosby’s release, Tate or Jordan Shipley could end up being the punt returner. Shipley did return some punts during the preseason while the last time Tate did it was in college at North Carolina. Adam Jones could also be a possibility when he gets off the PUP list in Week 8 against Seattle.

The Bengals also filled seven of their eight positions on the practice squad, signing FB James Devlin, LB DeQuin Evans, CB Brandon Ghee, WR Andrew Hawkins, QB Dan LeFevour, OT Matthew O’Donnell and DT Jason Shirley.

Will the Chiefs be interested?:hmmm:

Haley & Pioli like the combo of blocking/receiving TE's. Coffman ain't no blocker.

Jake O'Connell isn't much of a blocker either. No one can convince me that Chase Coffman isn"t an upgrade over O'Connell

He got cut by the bungles? I mean it's not as bad as say getting cut by buf or cle but it's close.

He doesn't block, they drafted Gresham they don't really need two TEs that struggle to block the sun.

Its not really a harsh assessment of Coffman to say he struggled to block the sun as a prospect. Its just something that he never had to develop in his game at Mizzou and how they used him in that offense. Totally common situation these days with TEs coming out of spread offenses. I haven't watched many(maybe none) Bengals games since he was drafted so he could've developed in that area but as a draft prospect oh yeah he definitely could be described as "struggles to block the sun."

What I don't get is that he's had three full off seasons to learn how to be a good blocker. He has the size and athleticism. TEs aren't required to be all-world blockers. You'd think he'd work hard enough at it to at least be a passable blocker to be able to get on the field to demonstrate his pass catching ability and stay in the NFL.

I can't believe his dad(Paul Coffman) wouldn't have worked with him some on his blocking ability but of course his dad wasn't the best blocker either.

He was on the Bengals, lets not act like he was in a system that knows how to farm and develop players. The Bengals cant even keep their prime faces of the franchise players happy on the team while Coffman was there, let alone care about a project TE to develop.

I wonder what Atlanta would take for Tony G right now? I'd say he's worth a 4th. I've always had a dream that he'd play one last season with the Chiefs.

Coffman looked lost at the Bengals Training Camp from Day 1. It was sad too...I was hoping to see him do well. He didn't look good running routes...he spent a lot of time after practice getting some time with the Coaches but he still looked lost.

Bengals waived TE Mickey Shuler, who failed his physical. They re-signed TE Chase Coffman.
