Roethlisberger was speared in the kidney area in the AFC Championship Game. His midsection hurt so much that he had X-rays before the Super Bowl. They were negative. But a subsequent MRI told a different story. He found out last Thursday.
“Fractured ribs,” Roethlisberger said. “Luckily, in the game, I didn’t take any big hits to make ‘em hurt. But I knew all along there was something wrong. There wouldn’t have been anything they could have done about fractured ribs anyway. It was just suck it up and play.”

A tough SOB, no doubt....but at what point does that hurt the team?

He doesn't have a strong arm as is, how much juice does this take off his passes?

I can see Cassel having a sub 100 yard game against Buffalo.

How can you play with a broken rib? Isn't there risk of shards getting into your bloodstream if you move around too much? That's bad isn't it?

I'd imagine it's a crack not a break with shards getting loose. If that were the case it would take surgery and he'd definately be out.

You may be right. I have no idea what's up with the Chiefs this year. We may go 12-4, or we may go 3-13. I honestly have no feel for what this team is.

Im going to make sure my puppy isn't outside next Sunday then, because I don't see anyway the Chiefs play Stanzi over Palko if the situation calls for a backup. They gave Palko all the backup snaps against GB for that reason I am afraid.

The only thing Palko actually could still have over Stanzi is the playbook, but with how we all know Haley will call this game if the backup plays, might as well use Stanzi.

With all the stuff that had been going on, I really was still feeling fine about this team mojo-wise until the Moeaki injury was announced. Now this. If we weren't in a funk prior to the GB game, we seem to be now. The first two games are going to be even more interesting than originally thought.

I'd imagine it's a crack not a break with shards getting loose. If that were the case it would take surgery and he'd definately be out.

Crack, fracture, break. It's all medically the same. Some are worse than others though. Never seen a rib fracture taken to surgery. Have seen rib fractures that cause surgery due to them causing other medical problems, most notably a pneumothorax (collapsed lung).

Hence open fracture (compound fx, where bone protrudes through the skin) is a still a fracture, vs torus fracture ( bone is buckled ever so slightly but still hurts like hell)

Just for clarification.

I'm probably on my own with this, but if Cassel is hurt, good. I mean i don't want to see anyone hurt, but not having Cassel start is a good thing. lets get the other QB's a chance. See if they can do anything or not.

However, with craptastic O-line, it wouldn't matter if Jesus himself was in there.

Just for clarification.

maybe they can remove a rib surgically, like marilyn manson allegedly did.

Any QB who throws the ball into the ground right in front of the reciever that is 5 yards in front of him, on multiple occasions is not a good QB.

It's like all of you forgot last season. If there is no pass rush, and the DB's are craptastic, then yes, Cassel is awesome. But so is my grandmother. Anytime anyone even looks like they are gonig to get close to him, he goes full tard.

Bills fan here. I come in peace. I'm not a troll, just a life-long Bills fan wanting to talk some ball. I respect your team and your fan base.

That being said, I believe that some of you are short-changing the Bills a bit. If I remember correctly, last year's Bills-Chiefs game was very close, with the Bills being in position to win it late before our kicker, Rian Lindell, shanked the game winning field goal. If he had made that kick, the "terrible" Bills would have beaten your Chiefs.

Since then, the Bills have considerably strengthened their defensive front seven by adding the likes of Nick Barnett, Kelvin Sheppard, Shawne Merriman, and Marcell Dareus. We also still have Kyle Williams, who made the Pro Bowl last year and was named Profootballfocus.com's defensive player of the year. I expect that the combination of Dareus and Williams will be tough for the Chiefs o-line to handle. I realize that your team ALSO has a formidable front seven, and I expect Hali to have a sack or two on the day. My point is simply that the Bills appear to be much improved over the team that, as it was, nearly beat your team last season.

Two things scare me about the Chiefs: the defense and the ground game. With Moeaki and Baldwin out and Cassel injured, I don't expect your passing game to be very productive. I also expect Cassel to play tentatively due to the injury, especially if the Bills defense can get after him early and often. To me, the game comes down to this: If the Bills can stop the Chiefs rushing game and force them to pass, the Bills will win. If the Chiefs are able to run the ball at will, the Chiefs will win. Its that simple. I have listed what I believe to be the greatest improvement from last season to this season for the Bills (namely, the defense. And in particular, the front seven), so please feel free to educate me on the Chiefs' biggest upgrades since last season. I think this game will be hard fought and will have a close final score. Since the game was so close LAST season, this year's game may just come down to which team has improved more since last season's meeting.

Lastly, to anyone slinging mud at the Bills: I would ask you to take a look at your OWN favorite team. The Chiefs and Bills are very similar. Both are original AFL franchises with great and storied history, passionate fans, and a lack of recent sustained success. Neither team has been truly NFL relevent since the mid 90s. Neither team has had a great playoff success rate in the past 15 years. Yes, you guys won the AFC West last season, but I'd sincerely like to know how the Chiefs would fare in a division featuring the Pats and Jets rather than the Raiders and Broncos. If you want to say that the current Bills roster stinks in your opinion, then fine. But for people to shit all over the Bills and act like they're SO MUCH WORSE than the Chiefs as a franchise is ridiculous to me. Before you sling mud, take a long look at your own team and what truly noteworthy things its done in the NFL lately.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to September 11th. Here's to a hard fought and entertaining game with no injuries for either side. Go Bills!

Well you could see the above post and that would be that. If thats not enough, how about the part where you say Palko would be good for the team. There is nothing good about this injury.

Even if you want to say, atleast we get to see the other QB, that would be Stanzi, not Palko. Stanzi may be the QBOTF but who knows, and I doubt he shows it after basically a month of practicing in the NFL. Palko is never, ever, ever, ever, EVER, going to be a starting QB for us. The only person on this roster right now that can take that away from Matt is Stanzi, and its not now. The FO is giving Matt this season.

Palko is 2nd for one reason, he knows the offense and has just a little experience. IF experience was equal, Palko would be 5 miles behind Stanzi on the depth charts. If you are talking about Matt being good so we can see our future QB potential, mentioning Palko kills all reason behind that arguement if there was any to begin with.

No matter what you think of Matt, he is without question the best QB to start for this team next Sunday if we want to win. If he doesn't play they will start Palko, which does 2 things. Both negative.

1. He gives us less of a chance to win than Matt
2. Unlike Stanzi, he doesn't even give us a possible look into the future.

Nothing good there. You want to mention Cassel's arm ect. and then you are going to suggest a weak armed lefty?!

How that person came to that conclusion is beyond me....With the ugly preseason, injuries, and general lack of confidence in key aspects of the team (Line, QB.., Offense) and a ROUGH schedule...there isn't any room to overlook any game. There are only a very few situations where someone but YOURSELF is to blame for things.

Maybe you should actually think before you start typing...

If you can't tell the difference between injuries that are caused by stupidity and injuries that are unavoidable, I can't help you. Some things you have no control of, and can't take responsibility for it. For instance, I blame your mother for not aborting you when she had the chance, not you personally.

I understand, meat dragon. You're more comfortable with gramatically challenged morons with a 75 IQ, because you guys can all just gang up on them, tell them what assholes they are, and chase them off. When people come around and want to talk like human beings and actually discuss FOOTBALL and X's and O's, you're not fond of them. Its harder to defeat someone with logic and reasoning than with classy insults like "AIDS Dildo".

Like I said, if anyone wants to discuss the game itself or what might actually take place on the 11th, then cool. I'd love to discuss it without getting into a pissing match. And if you'd rather just call me names and have people edit words into my post and whatnot, thats fine too. Still waiting for some good football discussion.

There are plenty of people here who have already done so. If you stopped quoting those that aren't and started quoting those that are, maybe you would find the discussion of which you seek.

Are you a Sabres fan as well? I ask because I have a friend who is and being a Devils fan have seen a few games and always was impressed with the fan base. Can't be easy never winning(not an insult). Not really impressed with the Bills, although only one experience, upper-deck at Chiefs Bills 5 yrs ago or so, so many Canadians, and so many not actually watching the game. As to your second question: It is my belief that the Chiefs fan base, as represented on this forum, is underestimating the Bills. Now that I've answered one of your questions, will you answer one of mine?

What FOOTBALL REASONS (not silly, bullshit, non-reasons like "Because the Bills suck") do you have to believe that the Chiefs will beat the Bills on September 11th?

We aren't underestimating the Bills. Pawn hit the nail on the head on that one. Its just getting to game time, and as most football fans do, they get pumped up and start saying FTW. Numerous times we have talked about the schedule and said we need to win the first two games. Doesn't mean we think we are going to sleep-walk to the win.

At least thats how I read it. I just wanted to add my two cents as to how I think the game will play out and have some quality football discussion with the opposition's fans. Thats it. For instance, I listed what improvements I feel the Bills have made since last season and was hoping for a reply of some sort listing how the Chiefs have improved. I have yet to receive a reply. Thanks milkman. I concur with your asessment. The game will most certainly come down to who can run the ball more effectively.

I also am a bit dissapointed in the progression of Andy Levitre and Eric Wood. Wood had a horrific injury that wiped out the second half of his rookie year and then lingered all throughout last season, to the point that Wood couldn't even practice during the week at any point in the season. He kind of rushed back. Levitre, on the other hand, has been solid but certainly not great.

This will be the third year for Wood and Levitre. I expect Wood to perform well, as he is moving from guard back to his college position of center. I also expect Levitre to make a big jump. I'm not terribly worried about the interior of our line, actually. Its the TACKLES that scare the bejesus out of me. Demetrius Bell vs Tamba Hali is scary. Hell, even Erik Pears (our RT) vs Studebaker is a bit scary.

Speaking of o-line play and progression, whats the story with Brandon Albert? Is he going to be a tackle or a guard in the long term for you guys?

Go Bills!I think the Bills are going to have a good team this year. I think most Chief fans arn't thinking about the Bills but the Chiefs. We reallly don;t know a lot about your team. Good luck after next week,

In the same way that Brandon Albert is going into his make-or-break season at LT, I believe Bell is doing the same. However, if Albert can't get the job done at T, you can always slide him back inside and be confident that he will do well. Bell, on the other hand, is either a left tackle or a bust. There will be no in-between. He'll either lock down the starting job at LT for the Bills for the next decade or he'll be cut and the Bills will draft a franchise LT next season.

If you don't mind another question regarding the Chiefs: What are your thoughts on your defensive line? I have read mixed reviews about Jackson and Dorsey. For Jackson, I believe some people's expectations were simply too high and that he will be a fine 3-4 End in time. Dorsey, on the other hand, seems to be a square peg in a round hole. And forgive me, but I'm not sure who your current starter at NT is. Do you feel comfortable with the D-line? Also, with Siler out, who will start at ILB next to Johnson?

Tyson Jackson has been virtually useless for his first two seasons, showing a couple of flashes early last season and in this preseason.

He'll never live up to his draft position, but that's not his fault, it's Pioli's, for taking a 5 tech in this scheme that high.

Dorsey may seem like a square peg in a round hole, but he has been the best player on our line, playing well above expectations for his role in this defense.

Kelly Gregg was signed as a FA to start on the nose, and Jerrel Powe has been tough to handle even though he plays too high.

Those two, along with Amon Gordon, who has been a pleasant surprise as a FA pickup, will provide a solid rotation.

Siler was never going to start.

Jovan Belcher is the starter, and is a thumper who plays with outstanding gap discipline, but also needs work in pass coverage, but is improving.

When KC drafted Tyson Jackson as early as they did, I thought to myself "Thats too early for a 5-tech". Then the 2011 draft came, and the Bills selected Marcel Dareus. So far, he has looked extremely impressive throughout training camp and the preseason. He has pushed the pocket, stopped the run, and even gotten a few sacks. On the other hand. Dareus played 5-tech at Alabama and seems to be the perfect build and disposition for the position, whereas Jackson, if I'm not mistaken, played as a 4-3 DE at LSU.

I guess it comes down to this: If a 3-4 DE has a Richard Seymour type impact and is an anchor for the line, then its impossible to pick him "too early". I'm hoping Dareus has such an impact, and early indications are that he very well may. I hope Jackson becomes the DE the Chiefs drafted him to be...so long as it happens some time after week 1. :thumb:

If I can continue with my questions about the Chiefs (I love talking ball with passionate and knowledgable fans of other teams): Do you feel Derrick Johnson fits well as a 3-4 ILB. I know he was drafted to be a 4-3 OLB and he's a guy that I've always kept my eye on. He didn't have as big an impact as an OLB as I thought he would, so I've been watching with great interest to see how he does as a 3-4 ILB. Being in New York State, though, I don't often have the opportunity to watch Chiefs games. Would you say he's a fit in your 3-4? You guys seem to have some really talented pieces on defense in Berry, Flowers, Carr, Hali, etc...Just wondering how Derrick fits in. Thanks.

You cant make this shit up folks.... Love how a 5th round QB is the franchise savior now...

Last year it was Croyle, now Stanzi... I do think the kid will be servicable, but he isnt the freaking messiah that everyone thinks he is at this stage in his career...

Take his balls out of your mouth and let the kid learn how to be a NFL QB...

Honest question - who looked better in preseason Palko or Stanzi?

You must have us confused with a franchise that drafts good QBs.

I believe the player you're referring to is Danny Batten, second year OLB out of South Dakota State.

The Bills drafted him in the 6th round last year and reports were that he was tearing it up in training camp. Unfortunately, he sustained a season-ending injury before he could see any live game action. This year, he's back, healthy, and doing quite well. He's one of those "non stop motor" hussle players. Not elite athletically, but smart, instinctive, and with a never-say-die attitude. He has several sacks this preseason, though the preseason is admittedly not a good indicator overall. Still, I expect him to line up across from Merriman in obvious passing situations. Our LB corps in general is much improved this season. Gone is Paul "Glass" Pozluszny. We now have Nick Barnett and Andra Davis starting at ILB with newly signed Kirk Morrison coming off the bench, as well as this year's 3rd round pick out of LSU, Kelvin Sheppard. We also have second year man Arthur Moats (who made the hit that ended Favre's career) coming off the bench at ILB.

OLB-wise, Bills fans are excited about Merriman. We know that he has been a shell of his former self for the past few years, but he seems to be completely re-dedicated to football and hungry to prove he can still play. He's only 27 years old, believe it or not. At any rate, he has looked dynamic throughout the offseason. First he made plays all through training camp. Then, in preseason game 1, he got 2.5 sacks in 2 series of play. He didn't play again until preseason game 4, where he once again flew all over the field, made key tackles, and pressured the passer. If Shawne can stay healthy, and thats a BIG if, I believe he will get upwards of 10 sacks and will be a candidate for comeback player of the year. Again, this is only if he stays healthy. All in all, our LB corps seem to be 100% improved over last season's debacle. Our newly improved D-line should keep blockers off of them, too, allowing our LBs to flow to the football. Dareus+Williams+Merriman is going to be tough for opposing offenses to stop this year. Its a "pick your poison" type scenario.

Any way, sorry to babble your ear off. I have another question for you, Red Foreman, if you're not sick of me yet: Jonathan Baldwin...whats the deal? I mean...who the heck gets in a fight with Thomas Jones? Jones is one of the most respected guys in the locker room right? Is Baldwin just an entitled Diva, or did the media overblow the situation?

There would have been nothing wrong to play Stanzi in that last preseason game. He may not be ready to start a regular season game, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't have played a glorified practice just to see him make some progress from the first 3 preseason games. He sure could of at least played in the last 5 min of it. What if Cassel and Palko both get hurt then Stanzi would be called to play so he could have used the reps too.

Honestly don't know what the real story was with Baldwin.

Chiefs are tight lipped about things like that, and the KC media is a joke.

I don't really know what the real story was, nor do I care. As long as he comes back soon and be a contributing force to recon with for our offense.

I kind of like it that Coach Haley doesn't reveal what happens in sertain situations that the media can make judgement toward players and have a devide in the team. That is protecting the players and the team from the media its self. All there is is speculation but the team can move on from it, and the players would appreciate Haley not bringing in house dirty laundry into the public. jmo.

Hypothetical question: If Cassel can't go on the 11th, which Tyler would you rather have under center, Palko or Thigpen? :hmmm:

Totally random thought of the moment: What ever happened to "The Nigerian Nightmare" Christian Okoye? That dude was an absolute BEAST! But it seemed like as quickly as he arrived, he was gone. Forgive my ignorance, but where the hell did he go? Back to Nigeria? What was he, like 250 lbs?
