LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) — A 17-year-old Colorado State University student lost both her legs when she tried to hop aboard a freight train and slipped underneath the moving train on Monday, police said.

One of three males with the student was briefly dragged by the train but suffered only minor injuries. The accident occurred in the northern Colorado town of Longmont shortly after 1 p.m. when the group tried to board the northbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, police said.

Train speed limits through Longmont are 25 mph. It wasn't known exactly how fast the train was going at the time of the accident.

The student was taken to Longmont United Hospital by ambulance and then flown to Denver Health Medical Center. Denver Health officials said they couldn't release any information about her, but Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur said he believed she was conscious and able to talk.

Longmont is about 30 miles north of Denver and about 30 miles south of Fort Collins, where the university is located. All four lived in Fort Collins and it's possible they caught a train south and were trying to return home when the accident took place, Satur said.

No names have been released, but Satur said the three males with were between 17 to 20 years old. The female victim's parents live in another state, which Satur didn't identify.

The male who was dragged by the train was cited for trespassing, as was another one of the males, Satur said. A third male made it aboard the train and his whereabouts were unknown.

Satur said he didn't know if the female would be cited.

"She's got enough issues to worry about," he said.

What I find really crazy about this is that I live in Fort Collins, my parents live in Longmont, I was in Longmont on the day this happened, yet I find out about it from ChiefsPlanet.

It reminds me of another thing that happened on the same rail line last year. An older "continuing education" type student apparently flunked a very important test, and decided to commit suicide by laying down on the tracks. He succeeded with flying colors, and the police had to shut down all the rail crossings in Fort Collins because there were pieces strewn the entire length of the city.

I live in FoCo too, in fact my office is about 100 yards from the tracks. They really need to relocate them. They're a menace, and BNSF has a habit of rolling trains right through the middle of town at 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

How are they a menace? Are they some kind of stealth trains that have no warning lights at the crossings?

I take the train into Chicago every day. Haven't had any suicides-by-train lately, but over the past ten years there have been several. Certainly an effective method, and I guess it's a wonderful way to make a statement on what a self-absorbed douche you are - hey, I want to die in such a way that traumatizes dozens of witnesses and makes several thousand people two hours late for work! Pricks. Just stay home and fucking shoot yourself.

These really suck when they happen in Downers Grove, which is about 10 miles east of me. Those clowns take forever to investigate the scene and clean up the carnage. 100 people see some idiot step in front of an express train traveling at 70 mph, the train's stopped half a mile down the track, and bloody chunks are splattered for 150 yards. Apparently they're not sure about the cause of death.

More of a nuisance than a menace, perhaps. The tracks basically divide the heart of the town in half and run right through the CSU campus, and there's train traffic all day long. I seriously doubt that very many people would be hopping cars or throwing themselves on the tracks if they were out in the boonies.

I think I've told the story here in the past, but I was on a flight long ago with a guy who had lost both legs and an arm while trying to hop a train. He was, of course, suing the railroad and was on his way to some sort of hearing. This was on a Southwest Airlines flight, and I don't know if they still have them, but I was sitting across from him in those seats that faced each other. He was drunk or drugged or something and talked to us (me and my boss) the whole time, and eventually got kicked off the plane for hitting a flight attendant. Fun times.

I remember thinking when I posted this last week that we were overdue for a choo-choo-icide. Sure enough, some idiot jumped in front of the train I was on earlier this evening, and was ground to death under the car I was riding in. Of course, he did it at the stop before mine, leaving hundreds of people to find ways to their cars parked at the next station lot, five miles away. Luckily I was able to get one of my friends to give me a ride.

This one wasn't too bright - the train was pulling in and slowing down. I'm sure death was quick, but probably not that quick.
