View Full Version : Food and Drink Question about a beer

Last November, someone gave my girlfriend a bottle of Belgium, flavored beer. It's been sitting on the counter, not the fridge, since that time, including during hot summer with no air conditioner.

Should this still taste right? I won't be able to tell myself, because to me, all beer tastes pretty bad.

No, but you should drink it anyway.

First of all, beer foul! Second, chill it down and give it a shot, it's not like it will hurt you, if it has a little skunk. If that's the case, give it a toss.

In most cases, it should be fine. Depends on the type of beer, though.

Framboise Lambic

AustinChief

It really depends on a what beer it is.. if it is "bottle-conditioned" it is probably better aged... if not, it is probably not gonna be too good.

Luckily, quite a few Belgian beers are, so you may be in good shape.

Yep, if it's a clear bottle, he's likely hosed, if not, he should be ok.

Framboise Lambic

Hmm...I'd wonder about a lambic. The fruit juices in there probably aren't very happy with being left out for so long. What's the % ABV? Alcohol is a preservative, so if it's a high-end beer that's 10% alcohol, you're probably fine. If it is a little 4% kind of deal, it's probably too late.

Regardless, I'd still give it a try, but it may not be optimal.

Beer spoils overnight. That's why you have to be sure you drink it all.

Not only should it be good, it has aged in the bottle and is probably even better then if you had it last year.

It "should" be bottle-conditioned so it will actually age in the bottle and create a smoother more "rounded" beer over the course of a few years... I think it has a 5 year shelf life... but don't quote me on that.

Just to be clear here... that is the "beer" of choice from my girlfriend before the last one... it is FAR FAR from being a beer... think of it as an old school European version of a Mike's Hard Lemonade ...

It is extremely fruity.

In Jenson's defense... free "beer" is free beer....

See beer did that to me when I was 12.

First time drinking and went WAY overboard.
Drank got real drunk.
Ran from the police got caught punched up a little and then drank quite a bit more.

Then puked for what seemed like a month.

My friends are all a coupleof years older so I had to keep up to be respected, and I did. Always.

We all are still good friends, hell one works for me, and we all had a great laugh over it at my house on labor day.

Yeah, I was at a keg and had a big bottle of Southern Comfort with me. I was drinking that, along with a lot of beer. I downed about half of it, while draining numerous brews. I remember things starting to spin, before talking to the beast. That was the last time I have ever yacked from alcohol and also the last time I had SC. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

Well, it was either that or open the bottle of Pendryn Gold (Welsh Single Malt) or the Yamakazi 12 (Japanese Single Malt).

Really, really enjoy the Pendryn and I've heard a lot of good stuff about Japanese single malts.

Already know I like the Irish (Redbreast) and the New Zealand (Milford) ones.

This applies at cellar temperatures. Sitting through a hot summer with no AC is a HUGE variable. It probably killed of the yeast left in there. I know when brewing, yeast that gets too warm can go "wild" and ruin a beer. I doubt it would be that severe in the bottle since it's deprived of oxygen, but I'm not really sure. I do know that heat can mess with the alpha acid from hops which makes the beer taste skunky. The again, that's not a remotely hoppy beer so...

Bottom line: Just drink it and you tell us.

That's exactly what Lindemans Framboise is (I am assuming that you drank Lindemans, as it is by far the most widely available "lambic") -- a raspberry soda pop (with some alcohol).

It tastes fine, but it is not a good example of Lambic. True Lambic beer is never sugared up with artificial sweetener like Lindemans or Boon or etc. lambics are.

If you want true Lambic -- one of Earth's best beverages -- find a bottle from brewers/blenders like Cantillon or Drie Fonteinen.

Cantillon, Drie Fonteinen, and Hannsens are the real deal. Extremely complex, dry, funky, sour Lambic.

I love John's Grocery. I dropped $300 last November at John's, because they had tons of Cantillon and Fantome and Drie Fonteinen that had been sold out for a long time in Kansas City (or pretty much elsewhere). They had some bottles of 2003 Fantome Pissenlit (a farmhouse ale brewed with dandelions), and I bought all six of them without a second's hesitation.

Drink it ASAP.

not always true.

I'm aging some imperial IPA's right now and have been for almost a year. It shouldn't be kept in high heat though, but if it has enough alcohol content, some beers can get better with age.

Which IIPAs? That is a style that, except for a rare few cases that take on a Barleywine character with age, gets markedly worse by the week, let alone the month.
