Berry's injury could be serious

Chiefs safety Eric Berry left Sunday's game in the first half with a knee injury, and he didn't return in Kansas City's 41-7 loss to Buffalo.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said afterward that he didn't yet know the extent of Berry's injury.

But there was concern inside the locker room that the injury could be serious. Berry was tended to earlier in the contest before returning; a few minutes later, the second-year safety was helped off the field.

Any time a guy goes down without being touched, it's usually serious. However, Berry didn't appear to be in a lot of pain, so I'm hoping this is the exception to the rule.

But if he is out, we've got Piscitelli to step in and ... oh, who am I kidding? We're screwed.

I would be pretty upset if it's serious.

He's my favorite defensive player in the league. That's just me personally. I love his upside. I love his potential. I love his physical play, and playmaking ability. I've been following him since his freshman year at Tennessee. He's amazing.

I would feel similar to how Colts fans feel about not getting to see Manning play this year.

Has it been confirmed his knee is the problem? I was thinking it looked like a groin from what I saw at the game.

The first time he came off he was holding his groin (I thought) and walking around the way you would with that sort of an injury.

He tried to play through it and fell, again limping the way I've seen people limp with a groin problem.

While on the sideline it looked like they were working his knee, but I think that's just the same sort of motion you use to work the groin.

So I could be completely wrong, but my call is a groin. How bad is anybody's guess.

What are the signs and symptoms of a possible ACL tear?

The famous "pop" is the most telling symptom of an ACL injury, although you may have a tear without ever experiencing the pop. The injury is usually followed by considerable pain and swelling within the first several hours. You may develop a feeling of instability in the knee or "giving way", making walking difficult.
What should I do if I think I have an ACL tear?

Immediately after an injury think RICE: Rest Ice Compression Elevation. Then see your doctor.

LMAO Yep. That's the problem. They might never tell us. Just keep him on the injury report making us think he has a chance to come back.

That actually may be the smart thing to do for once. Last thing we want is for our opponents to know we'll be starting Piscitelli and McGraw at safety. Shit, list Berry as ****ing probable every week for all I care. At least don't let the other team know they hit the "passing game jackpot" until they're out on the field.

Let's worry more about winning the next 15 games.

Still even now there are NO stories of Steve Johnson laying out a 'cheap block' to Berry, not in the press conferences, not in the local papers, not in national stories. I'm sorry, but he's innocent of the charges of playing dirty...

Do you really have to read somebody's opinion when there's a gif right above your previous post where you can come to your own conclusion? I personally hope this is his last season in the NFL. I could give a rats ass if the hit is technically "legal", that shit ends careers and needs addressed if kickoff returns was a problem.

When Moeaki got injured I posted something elsewhere that it happens and all that shit.

I went on to use Berry as an example of a season ending injury that would ruin our entire season completely.

I hope to god he's not injured too badly. Berry was the main catalyst for our improvement last season on defense, and with those two clowns back there giving up big plays we're going to go backwards really far, really fast.

One really weak position in the secondary can ruin an entire defense.

Having 2 suck ass safeties will make our great CB's look like shit because they will be forced to play even further off the LOS. Because if a receiver gets behind them, it's game over. Kendrick Lewis is ok. But he's gonna have to realllly step up. He's not physical enough to me. Not a good tackler. The best tackler on our team might be Brandon Flowers, or maybe Tamba Hali.

The best tackler on our team, imo, is Eric Berry. He's totally textbook. Flowers is great as well.

Lewis made some pretty costly mistakes today.

We simply can't play good defense without Eric Berry. Not with this roster. If he's out for an extended period, it's going to hurt. You can't scheme to cover up that kind of deficiency. No DC is that good.

Cut Block Rule:
Cut blocks are legal mainly in the open field. This allows the defensive player an opportunity to avoid or hurdle the block. The main area in which a cut block is not legal is in the trenches. The trenches are considered the area where offensive and defensive linemen square off against one another at the line of scrimmage

As a third-party observer, I think Buffalo fans clearly have a right to crow after that ass kicking. They came into your house, kicked ass against the odds, and shocked almost everyone.

However, as a Patriots fan, I think Buffalo fans need to remember that their team has sucked balls for a decade, and the odds are pretty good that this was their "Super Bowl" (as opposed to this being a sign of actual improvement and an indication of a good season).

So, Chiefs fans, after beating your wife and kicking your dog (or kicking your wife and beating your dog), try to go to sleep secure in the slight and cold comfort that, more than likely, the Bills will soon be getting their asses handed to them by the Pats, Jets, and a bunch of others. At which point, you won't have to worry about hearing from them any more for a while. They'll all jack off tonight and dust off their long-buried Jim Kelly jerseys and Marv Levy posters, but the cold slap of reality will ruin their season as usual, I'd bet.

Eric Berry was a rookie playing against a veteran TE. Sorry, the situations have zero parallels.

It wasn't just the TE.

Watch how many times 42 and 47 show up on pass completions. They went at them all day long regardless of the match-up.

No, I don't think that would have happened quite the same with Eric Berry in there. I don't have a crystal ball, but I know he makes a difference.

Fact is, we NEED to add 2 more good safeties if we are to ever be a real contender.

Defenses are only as strong as their weakest link and even Lewis got ate up today.

I LOVE the idea of adding Darren Sharper to this unit...even on his last legs, he would be the second best safety we have.

pure heart

Kid wouldnt let himself believe that he was really injured and not just hurt like had happened many times in the past.

Happens a lot.

I dont think it was as serious as some here think, though.

He walked down the steps by himself to the trainers room when he left the field...if the medical staff really felt he completely tore something, no way they let him walk down steps within minutes of a tear.

He also returned to the sideline with his shoulder pads still on...is he had a tear, that likely wouldnt be the case.

If he has a tear in any of the three ligaments of his knee, I will be pretty shocked.

I will also be equally as shocked if he plays anytime in the next month.

Asking your opinion. It looks like the helmet is in front to me.

If the helmet is in front, they'll rule it legal. I don't like it, because it's pretty easy to get the helmet in front and come from behind, but Denver did it for decades.

Week 1 - Gates 5/76 1 TD
Week 2 - Watson 4/62
Week 3 - Vernon Davis 3/22
Week 5- Dallas Clark 3/20
Week 6- Owen Daniels 5/76
Week 7 - Mercedes Lewis 3/44
Week 8 - David Nelson 3/25
Week 9 - Brandon Myers 3/20
Week 10 - No TE catches

Week 15 - Dan Fells 4/47
Week 16 - Jared Cook 5/96 1 TD
Week 17 - Zach Miller 5/31

So for the season, the Chiefs gave up more than 50 yards receiving to a TE just 5 times - with 4 of them coming from vet. TE's .

he came from behind to make the block.

The rule states that its legal if the defender has a chance to hurdle the offensive player.

You cant do that if the offensive player is behind you.

Id like to see a high res screen shot of the moment the contact takes place.

I wish I was home so I could freeze it at the moment that happens...but its hard to do with my road laptop Im using.

OK... that makes sense. A player cannot "hurdle" when a cutblocker sneaks up behind him. Its gotta be illegal, otherwise players would all be sneaking up behind people to blow their knees up. Teams would need a roster bigger than 53 to last a whole year if that was a legal play....

I dont feel like going back through box scores to see what the teams #2 TE options did to us, but even without anything....about 600 yards given up to tight ends is above average.

The point is that Berrys job as a SS isnt covering a tight end that is coming across the field and thats what hurts us.

WTF?

Berry got beaten up by Gates and Heap, but held his own against everyone else.Jon McGraw was Berrys replacement iirc...but admittedly, I was watching a stream on the road laptop and not watching at home where this would be much clearer.

According tro ESPNs box score (http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/playbyplay?gameId=310911012&period=0) and whole game play by play...only one pass to Chandler was credited to McGraws coverage (Berrys replacement) and the rest were credited to other defenders...mostly Piscatelli.

They were attacking our weakest link on defense constantly...that was Gaileys MO.

Once Berry went down, that weakest link seemed to be sabby more often than not.

well, on defense we didnt even try to attack their crap OTs and on offense we only had 18 rushing attempts against last years worst rated run defense.

That's my point.

Last year's no 1 rushing team didn't ever try to establish the run.

At all. Constantly throwing on first down, giving us 2nd and long, and shooting ourselves in the foot.

Looks like the 'helmet in front of the knee' that I was talking about only applies in the trenches where it's legal to cut from the side. I wasn't aware cutting from the side (which I'm totally opposed to) was only legal in the trenches.

That was an illegal block.
