View Full Version : Home and Auto Car help? It's a jingling noise.....

I hopped in my '99 Explorer today to run to the store and noticed a jingling noise. It's hard to describe, but the best way is probably like a chain jingling or the tinkling of a handful of washers shaking. Sound seems to be coming from driver's front, speeds up and slows down with the motor/wheels, occurs in all gears, including reverse, stops during turns and braking.

I'm thinking maybe a bad wheel bearing? I really don't have any idea, and since it's a Saturday afternoon, my mechanic is not an option before Monday.

EDIT: The sound speeds up/slows down the faster the car is going; when the motor's RPMs slow as it shifts, the sound does not, so it must coincide with the wheels, not the motor.

Was Mr T riding with you, or was there a pimp with you in the front seat, sporting a bunch of bling? That would explain the "jingling" noise.

There's no way it can coincide with both the engine and wheels while going through all the gears. It has to be one or the other.

Bearings have more of a whoop whoop whoop sound and are louder when cornering.

Is your Explorer 4WD, if so could be a CV joint. Otherwise could be something in your axle assembly, check your U-joints for wobble.

But your description sounds more like something loose on your exhaust.

What I'm saying is the sound speeds up/slows down the faster the car is going. So as I'm thinking about it the way you put it, when the motor's RPMs slow as it shifts, the sound does not, so it must coincide with the wheels.

2WD, definitely not a whoop whoop whoop sound, and it stops making the noise during cornering.

I added check you u-joints, this post reinforces that.

Its the 4 pronged thing between your transmission and driveshaft, then again between the driveshaft and rear end.

does it happen when the vehicle is stopped also? If not, try applying brakes while moving and if it stops when applied... brakes.

Not 100% sure, but its probably jingling because its a 12 year old Ford.
