We were a team on the rise last year because the quality of the starters, overall, improved, and the we played a soft schedule.

But the Raider and Raven games exposed the weaknesses of this team

Losing Berry only makes that weakness in the middle even more exposed, while Matt Cassel has lost any confidence that he might have gained playing that soft schedule.

1.Give me a franchise QB and a top 10 defense, and I'll take my chances against the rest of the league.

2.You build a defense from the inside out and front to back.

Stafford has the tools to be a franchise QB, if he can stay healthy, and that defensive front for the Lions is formidable.

The Lions aren't yet ready to compete with the big boys, but they have the two primary parts in place to become a team that can.

They are going to win some games this year and compete for a playoff berth.

Null started the last 4 games of the season or so, and I thought he played well enough to be a stop gap if they drafted Suh.

The Rams hadn't taken a QB in the 1st since the 60's.

He was graded as a second round prospect by Mayock and Kiper....I think teams looked at his tape from sophmore and junior seasons and weighed them into their process more than his senior year.

He made a lot of boneheaded decisions early in games those years and therefore his numbers were only good, not great.

His senior year showed his ability to be coachable and his production went way up.

The kid was always good in the bigger games and was undefeated in 3 bowl games as well.

I think Boss overplays his hand a little W/R/T Stanzi, but there's no doubt in my mind that Stanzi would be a better QB than Cassel by the end of the season w/ equal opportunity.

He's not going to see the field, but there's not a single thing that Cassel does better than Stanzi apart from having a better feel for the speed of the NFL. 1 season as a starter from Stanzi would make up for that IMO, as Cassel has clearly shown an inability to thrive with said speed.

I'm inclined to buy the theory that he's inactive to ensure he doesn't create a QB controversy. Even if you don't think he's a better option than Cassel, surely everyone will concede he's a better option than Palko. So why's he behind him if not for a non-football reason?
