Bernard Berrian tells legless Iraq war vet ‘sit down n shut up!’

Twitter is a wonderful online forum for professional athletes to reach the public and remove any kind of filter when it comes to the message they want to spread.

It’s also a very dangerous environment where they can do damage to themselves.

That’s just what happened to Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian(notes), who engaged in some back-and-forth with followers on Sunday night and eventually told one fan to “sit down n shut up!!” It wasn’t just any fan, though. It was John Kriesel, a Minnesota state representative who is a double amputee and an Iraq war veteran.

Berrian is supposed to hold a press conference of sorts in the Vikings locker room this afternoon in an effort to clear up this mess. It all started Sunday night after the Vikings fell to 0-4 with a 22-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Berrian has two catches for 37 yards on the season and said that’s not a reflection of how open he’s been.

When Kriesel challenged him on Twitter, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, that’s when things took a turn for the worse.

Berrian wrote on his account @B_Twice: “@johnkriesel Anytime u wanna watch the film with me. Not just one game but all of them. And if not sit down n shut up!!”

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said at his press conference that he instructed Berrian to call Kriesel and apologize for his remarks.

A major free-agent addition in 2008, Berrian has struggled for three seasons now and he’s clearly not blocking out the criticism.

Well you're asking for it if you're taunting a pro athlete online. To be honest I don't see this being a problem. It looks bad because someone made a story out of it.

I'm assuming he didn't have any clue what this man's former title was, and that he was a double amputee.

I'm glad Minnesota's got their political stuff together (sarcasm alert) so that their State Representatives have time to trash talk a scrub receiver for an 0-4 team.

Well, that's it, isn't it?

If he didn't know who the guy was this is the stupidest sports article ever written.

Um, why was a Minnesota state representative (not sure what him being an amputee has to do with anything...) "challenging" people on twitter?

Yep. What's a state representative doing sparring with a pro athlete on twitter anyway?

WTF? Who cares? Hell, even if he DID know that the guy was an amputee, why shouldn't he be told to "sit down and shut up?" Is this man somehow immune to normal arguments now?

Excellent question.

I have as much respect for our military guys as most people, but serving in the military doesn't immunize them from criticism for everything they do for the rest of their lives.

Don't be stupid.

Obviously you should phrase things differently if you knew who he was. That does not make him "immune to normal arguments"...

You can tell who the real winners and losers of the NFL are from how they behave on Twitter. Winner - Eric Berry! Winner - Jamaal Charles! Loser - Larry Johnson! Loser - Bernard Berrian!

Lesson in life: If someone on twitter tries to insult how you do your job, don't tell them to STFD and STFU because they might be double amputees and state representatives.

I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me.

This one time I told a guy on Twitter that he was brain-dead, and it turned out that he was in a coma. Quite embarrassing.

I'm not sure which one's the bigger dumbass but I'm leaning toward the senator. Then again maybe he was keeping a campaign promise to waste time he could use serving his constituancy by being a douchebag on line.

Just because someone holds a certain status, ie: Representative, or war vet... doesn't mean they can get away with shit that people without that status cannot.

Take the f*cking heat, legless man... or shut the f*ck up.

Yeah, I tend to agree with most of the rest in this thread. If you're a state rep, you're held to a higher standard of conduct. @johnkriesel doesn't really have a leg to stand on here.

At least Berrian didn't compare him to Hitler.

Unfortunately, just about ALL politicians are at least a 'little' like Hitler. They all like power. They all think they can build the 'great' society. They all want to create the Super Race and exterminate all the Jews....oh, wait, maybe not those last two.

Well, except Obama of course.

That Rep from Minn. has about as much a chance of winning this argument as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.
