He didn't invent the speed reciever, but he was able to utilize and market them better. It made the league and in turn all of our lives a better place. Imagine watching a bunch of guys with 4.6 speed try and play the position :)

After watching the NFL Network series about the AFL, I learned a lot about Davis and what he did for the old AFL. Apparently, he was always angry and resented Lamar Hunt for merging the AFL with the NFL. Hunt did the right thing & I really don't know if Davis ever appreciated the correct decisions Hunt made at the time. Even though I can never like the Raiders, I can respect what Davis did for the AFL.

While I personally hated the man for always voting the opposite way everyone else did at owner's meetings, or abstaining, he did a lot for the league, in it's youth. That being said, he already LOOKED DEAD over a decade ago.

This. The only thing he's big for is being the coach, then becoming the owner for so long for that franchise. He was against what Lamar wanted. The Hunt's have said he's gotten too much credit back in an interview in the early 2000s.

I guess you haven't been paying attention lol. The 3 SBs were a long time ago and the playoff success was a long time ago. If it weren't for the bleap in 2001 and 02...wow they would've went longer. Usually a franchise with the numbers you mentioned are more successful and at least competitive for good tenured time. But the thing is that was all bunched until up to the 80s then the Raiders disappeared because of Al Davis. They peaked then. Since then they have been one of the worst and poorly run franchises in professional sports. So much that people forget the 3 SBs and the 25 playoff wins. That's how bad they've been.

Naw... its been ups & downs the whole time. Only team to be in the SuperBowl 4 of the 5 decades of the NFL. Made a damn good run with Gannon, Tuck Game, sucked meeting their own coach the last time an AFCW team was in the SuperBowl. The only reason the NFL merged was because the AFL was gaining in popularity and became a real threat to the NFL.

If they hadn't, the AFL, becaase it was the more creative and innovative, and more entertaining brand of football, it would have almost certainly eventually surpassed the NFL.

The USFL was creative and innovative there for awhile, too.

Al dying is actually pretty bad news for you guys. Al laid off the offense years ago and concentrated his efforts on the defense. Statistics tell that tale so I won't bother to post them. The only team with a worse point per game average than us right now is...

Hey, it's you guys!

But now that we have a one of the better offenses in the league and if we can just get a middle of the road defense, we're looking pretty damn good.

I've been a Raider fan for 33 years now and it makes me a lot more sad than I thought I'd be to hear about Al's passing. But as far as the team winning and losing goes... damn. Before Al croaked he did make the right moves in putting together a damn good offense. Christ, a D with an overall 16 rank probably puts us in the playoffs for the next 4 years.

Anyway, another important factor is the following:

I think Oakland can kiss the Raiders goodbye. The city of L.A. never wanted anything to do with Al ever again and he would have never agreed to any of the criteria that would have moved the team back to the 2nd largest market in the nation. But now that he's gone a new day has dawned in moving them back out of that bunghole near the bay and into a new stadium in a real market.

Obviously, I live in the L.A. area.

As for those of you cheering his death, that's totally cool. I completely understand. The thing is, his death will make the Raiders better; it'll allow a defensive coordinator to not have to run a defense that last dominated in 1985. And that's all we need.

At this rate I don't think you guys can expect to beat us until 2014 or so.

The only reason the NFL merged was because the AFL was gaining in popularity and became a real threat to the NFL.

If they hadn't, the AFL, becaase it was the more creative and innovative, and more entertaining brand of football, it would have almost certainly eventually surpassed the NFL.

The AFL was "bombs away" throwing the ball & the NFL was 3 yards & a cloud of dust. The young generation fell in love with the "razzle dazzle" of the AFL. The NFL would have died if they didn't capture the young market that was buying into the AFL. The AFL went & got the best players (regardless of race) and the players liked the $ the AFL owners would pay. Broadway Joe got triple the offer from the Jets then any NFL was offering. The NFL needed to merge with the AFL because the AFL was kicking the NFL's butt.

Rip Al Davis.

This man did a lot for the game.

Many didn't like him and that didn't change him. Despite the fact he had a bit of a rebellious attitude, he managed to maintain a consistent identity for himself. I respect him for that.

I loved his passion for the game and his commitment to winning. I thought that he was creative where he establised those black and silver colours and a pirate logo for his team. That, was symbolic of his attitude towards authority. Even the players he had were a mere reflection of his character. Many people hate the Raiders because they seemed like they were larger than life. But I think thats a good thing because thats what made them unique, and that gave the league a bit more of a personality.

Aside from all this, I think that deep down inside Al Davis was a humanitarian. He had feelings towards others in a good way. I was reading somewhere that his wife had a heart attack and he moved into her hospital room to live with her for over a month. Wow. Talk about being supportive man. Even if acquainted people were ill he offered medical help.

God Bless him

Dude... you're gonna die sometime as well. You'll have to explain that to St. Peter.

The sun shines on a dog's ass every once in a while.

Except in KC....

Huh? They've had completely awful drafts for years.

Darren McFadden, Michael Bush, Matt Shaughnessy, Jared Veldheer, Stephen Wisnewski, Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore, Taiwan Jones... Chiefs would use any of those guys on their team this year.

"Al Davis makes Darth Vader look like a wimp." — Hunter S. Thompson

"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and f*** -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get f***ed. Someday, the Raiders will be strong again, and they will dip the ball in s*** and shove it down the throats of the wholesome, white, heartland teams that pray together and don't deliver late hits." - George Carlin.

I liked Al. He was old school Brooklyn. He helped shape the NFL to what it is today. His team has a good history on par with any NFL franchise. He broke barriers. And, for as much as KC fans enjoy belittling the guy, his franchise has had more success than the Chiefs over the last 40 years.

Rest in peace, Al.

Regards,
Ange Coniglio

The fact is that Al Davis was hired as commissioner of the AFL for the sole purpose of battling the NFL.

He did his job, and did it with zeal.

He was against the merger, but his actions as the commissioner were part of the reason the NFL merged.

Ironic, really.

But love or hate the guy, you should recognize that in his early days, he was a pioneer with vision, and through most of the 60s, 70s and 80s, he built teams that were competitive and SB contenders almost yearly.

It is now that your gone. Thanks "Not" for all the many years of Misery we Raider fans had to endure while you were the cancer killing the Raiders. It didn't have to be that way. You could have done the right thing and stepped down a long time ago. Owned the team but let others not stuck in the 60's run it. You would have been missed by every Raider fan. Instead we are just happy our team has a fighting chance now. Of course a bunch of us still worry you will continue to kill our team from the grave. Who knows what is in your will. Like the team can only draft the fastest players who can't play football. Fitting your last wasted draft pick was a guy that will never be a NFL QB. Pryor.

As a minority, I will always appreciate what Mr. Davis did for them in the league. What other owner can say they hired the first Latino and black head coach. Not only that, that they hired the highest ranking woman in NFL history, as CEO.

For this alone, he will be considered a visionary.

Fuck him I hope they beat his crypt keeper carcass to a pile of ooze with baseball bats Casino style and dump him in the nearest latrine.

Actually shock is Al asking what God's 40 time is when there is a good chance he's not getting past the gates.

Vile is the Raider record the last couple decades under Al.

Actually I don't know what an aids tree is since I am not gay. But the Raider Nation is tolerant. Its ok if you are a gay Raider fan. I won't hold that against you.

Last time I checked I didn't have the power of life or death. I had nothing to do with Al dying. But I'll check if it makes you happy. If I have the power I will promise to raise Al from the dead. As long as he agrees to not have anything to do with my beloved Raiders.

So what you are saying is Al wanted to run the team into the ground. He was successful at that.

I have nothing against Wall Street. But if I did I wouldn't go there to protest. I don't want to be around a bunch of Denver fans.

You sound angry. Better save some of it for tomorrow. You will need a big supply of it when Foster rushes for over 200.

Was there ever proof that Al picked up the tab?

Opposing players and teams despised the Raiders. Those who worked for Davis soon learned about the value of loyalty. Once a Raider, always a Raider, Davis believed. So it was that Davis routinely paid the medical bills for former players, without seeking any publicity. He gave jobs to former players who remained loyal to the organization and needed a break. He even paid for the funeral of Kansas City Chiefs rival Derrick Thomas.

http://www.marinij.com/raiders/ci_19071833

There were many contradictions to Davis. Though he could be quite hard on people who worked for him and an implacable opponent to those in the way of what he wanted, he could be very generous to others. A couple of examples. When Hank Stram had a heart attack, Davis paid for the best heart specialist to treat him. When his wife, Carol, nearly died from a heart attack, a grateful Davis paid for new beds in the hospital where she was treated. In each case, and in many others where he was very generous, he forbade any publicity on what he had done. "He's the only man I know who keeps his good deeds secret and publicizes his bad ones," Durslag marveled.

Making all these jokes about Al dying, and saying that now we might be good?...you guys are the worst team in the league, hand down. Yes I am a Raider fan. Are you?? Guess what Al sucked. At least other teams fans own their own baggage. They don't have their head buried in a steaming pile of shit thinking everything is great. As long as Davis was around we were not gonna win. If you were happy with that more power to you. I wasn't. Neither were a lot more of us then you think. We didn't kill Al. We didn't say anyone should killed or hurt him. Al brought this all on himself. The way we feel is his fault. It didn't have to be that way.

You know what's really sad. That I have to go to another team's board to post how a lot of us really feel. Then being stalked by some of Al's sheep.

Dude... you're gonna die sometime as well. You'll have to explain that to St. Peter.

Except in KC....

That's a pretty Knowmoesque pimping of players dude ROFL...Now name all the busts
