I hear a loud car, and I assume they lost their muffler. I have a few male friends who say it sounds sweet. I guess I haven't listened to enough cars to know that difference, but I find it annoying either way. Is it cool to have your little car sound like some big truck? Or is it more of a higher pitch that makes it sound cool?

depends; a 'healthy' sounding exhaust attached to a strong engine is a beautiful thing.
although, I think too many times these guys put on their aftermarket exhaust and think their car is now suddently awesome/fast.

a civic with a fart can on it to compliment it's stock engine is another story/annoying.

As a Mustang owner I like the sound of a low rumble at idle. Much like you can hear in this video of an older 72' Nova. The cam produces that lope type sound you hear. This obviously isn't my car but I was trying to find a nice sound to show you what an engine should sound like. This is the "Muscle Car" Sound

<iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZOJjtHdvAjs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The problem is that with all the restrictions placed on New Car exhaust these days it is difficult to get this type of sound without doing some modifications.

If you look up Car Exhaust you basically have your Headers coming off the engine going into a mid pipe. The mid pipe normally has Catalytic Converters on it between the mid pipe and header. From the mid pipe it will travel to the back of the vehicle to the mufflers and then exiting out the tips on the back.

The more "restrictions" that you remove, the louder the car gets. Most Mustang folk looking to get maximum performance (meaning horsepower) go with a Long tube header, an uncatted x-pipe (mid pipe) and the removal of the mufflers. This would be illegal except for off-road use only meaning you are racing the car. But certain friendly inspection stations in states that don't really look or check up will go ahead and pass the car as good to go on the street.

The above example is EXTREMELY LOUD and I have driven in one of these and the drone at 2k rpm makes you want to get out of the car. So some people experiment and put free flowing cats back on the mid pipe or a more free flowing muffler. All these cut down on the sound but make the vehicle louder then stock.

So it all depends on what you like and what steps you take to get it there.

The drone sound you mention often comes from pointing your exhaust in a direction that it bounces back to the car. Like dumping it under the car. Its a harmonic thing.

Flow Master mufflers are notorious for droning right at 2K. Mine are no exception, they'll drone loud enough to vibrate the tub on my Jeep. Once warm they're not nearly as bad though, not sure why.

I really, really like the sound of my car. Now that I have a DVD recorder the car's been buried in the garage for 5 years. It's coming out again this summer since I'm selling my 2nd car it'll be my only hot rod. Easier to sell the 'cuda now that I have the wife in an SRT 10. Now talk about screwed up sounding motors, I'm still not use to the sound of it but know it flat gets with the program when that little pedal on the right is depressed.

Here's my car from several years back. 3" tti all the way back with tti 2" headers. Dynomax mufflers.

About :17 you can hear it when I'm pulling away.

I despise loud cars. The best cars are like snakes. They're quiet and low-key until they strike.

That said, I do like the sounds of those little British-type sports cars. But they're not loud. They just have a unique sound.

As an aside, my wife came to me on Monday and said, "Something's odd with the apricot BMW. It sounds like an old-time sports car." While I like its engine sound, it's more on the quiet side, so that was odd. She took it in, and apparently we'd hit something that bent some little support on the bottom of the car and pushed it up against the engine block. The engine was making the support vibrate, and apparently somewhat reproduced the sound of an old MG or Triumph.

Certainly not bad. First time I went to a track the noise they make surprised me a little. I grew up around ricers and just didn’t expect that kind of a sound to be coming from a race bike.
I like Ducati’s well enough but standing next to one that’s idling they sound like a sewing machine that’s about to come apart. It’s that Desmo valve train, rev it up a little and it sounds like a 90* v-twin but at an idle there’s a lot of mechanical noise coming from it. Nothing wrong with it, just a bit of an acquired taste.

Same here; first time I heard one was coming out of a motorcycle shop after picking up a part, and I heard a rumble rollup; I walked outsdie expecting to see a 'Vette or something, and it was a yellow 996 instead.

Yeah, at idle those dry cluthes (usually on the higher HP bikes) make a heck of a racket. (marbles in a can etc) especially if they have a vented clutch cover.

Also, nothing beats sitting in the stands at the drag races and hearing the low end rumble mixed with the high end rev of an engine with a blower.

yep; I love pro-modifieds and Nitros.

first time I heard a nitro drag crack the throttle in the pits with nitro-methane, it literally moved me backwards about 8" , and my vision was blurred.

It’s hilarious to watch NHRA coverage when they allow spectators at the starting line when the top fuel cars launch. It literally blows their hair back.

even better is when you're in the pits, gathering around a top-fueler and you know there are a few in the crowd who have no idea what they're in for when they fire them up. You find your victim - They start out holding their ears when the car starts on regular 'ol gas; the remove their hands thinking "this isn't so bad". Then they turn on the nitro and it starts to crackle/pop etc. Their hands return to their ears for a bit, then they remove them once again thinking "eh...a little louder, but not bad".

Then the driver cracks the throttle once while under nitro, and the spectator flinches like a bomb just went off behind him lol.

No cats? You put the cats back on when you need to smog it or something?

No real smog testing anywhere near where I am. And of course, as suggested, I have a guy who passes it, since technically, the cats are supposed to be verified by visual inspection.

Aw jeez, dude. Get a freaking STI.

not certain why having a WRX over an STI means anything, so i dont have a six speed trans, I have a 5. No biggie, im making far more horsepower than a stock STI, and im in the car much cheaper than it would cost to make an STI as fast. The cars have basically the same powerplant and the same mechanical configuration. Bigger turbo, fuel, and ethonal where relatively cheap. I also daily drive the car, so the heated seats, sunroof, visibility without the giant wing are things that appeal to me in the wrx vs the sti.

Uhhhhh.......that dont sound like no V8. Not by a long shot.

My claim is debatable by all counts. Sure, its not exactly the tone, nor does it lope like a v8, and the yuotube videos actually dont do much justice as to the true sound of the car. I know from experience that people think its a v8 if they can hear but not see the car, and almost never do they know its a 4 cylinder. When the wastegate opens up some of that mystique goes away. Maybe I should do a low rpm/idle vid to better show the deep grumble the car makes, similar to any boxer motor, and unlike 99% of the 4 cylinders out there.

For folks who like to quote manufacturer horsepower claims (crank) my car made just under 450 horsepower,
For car guys, who like to go by wheel, after my drivetrain loss (AWD ftl) i made 362 wheel, on 750cc injectors and we only stopped becuase the fuel was maxed. With 1000cc injectors the car will make considerably more horsepower, in the 400-410 wheel range (just over 500 crank horsepower)

Its mechanical music to my ears. Well, when tuned right.
I played around with a solid flat tappet motor in my Jeep and part of the fun was the music it made. It was a fresh motor so once the valves had seated and I got them lashed in properly the ticking noises went away and it made whirring noises instead. I’d be driving down the road with the windows open and it would sound like cicada’s in the trees, which I thought was a bit odd for late fall until I noticed the pitch would rise and fall with the throttle.

yup KCIR is done.

There is a 'new' dragstrip (Mid America Raceway) in my neck of the woods, ground cleared, all legalities passed and ready to build, and 10 days ago a few property owners NEAR the track (none of which are even full time residents) dropped a lawsuit guarenteed to delay the planned open date of March.

with KCIR being pretty much screwed, if MAR goes down, you are going to see a massive increase in street racing. Smooth move corrupt KC councilwoman and state senator mccaskill! I hope that all drag racers, and hell, sensible people read about how the KCIR shutdown came about, and make them pay with votes.
