I will miss Kemper :( Many fond memories of that place as a child.

Might want it the title to say razed instead of raised. It really doesn't make sense.

I think I read a beta about this. Kemper will be razed, and in three days raised up.

Saw A Perfect Circle, two WWF and one WCW show, and numerous Blades games there. I know this is hardly a revelation to anyone, but the West Bottoms, floodplain notwithstanding, has a lot of potential to be more than a JoCo Hipster Gallery district. Wonder what direction they'll take it.

Why would they raise the roof and put more seats in?

That does suck though, KU won a National Championship there and I remember this song when I would go to see the Wings play the Comets. For a soccer game, Kemper had an awesome atmosphere.

I got to go on the field at halftime of a Comets game once to try to kick a goal from midfield.

After they spun me around a few times to get good and dizzy.

I bet some of the players in the new league with 2 and 3 point goals cannot do that without the blindfold or being spun. That new league is horrible.

That was a great show. The sound system was bad for Primus, but it was still a treat to see them, especially after suffering through Mr. Big as the opening act the previous two tours.

I saw Owen Hart die there.

Numerous Big 12 tournaments (F you Eric Piatkowski).

Two NCAA tournament rounds (Remember the "Go Hoos Go" chant like it was yesterday as Virginia beat ku).

Tons of Blades and Comets games.

A handful of concerts back in high school/college.

Had some great times at Kemper.

Went to a Big 8 Tournament game and saw Donnie Boyce destroy his leg (he was about 30 feet in front of me when it happened; not pretty. I remember the hush in the arena to this day).

Tons of Blades games - Dale Craigwell was boss and Larry Dyck only had one eye - how cool is that?.

Went to some Arena football games. I once saw a dude hurl into the turf there and it disappeared like he'd puked into a sink.

I'm sure I did some other crap there as well. It was a nice place for awhile; a usable space for awhile after that, and now it's just run its course.

Time marches on - you had a good run, Kemper, but the run is over.

Caught my first and only hockey puck there at a Blades game.

KC Kings games, The very first, and other, KC Comets games, Pink Floyd Animals Concert, Circque de Soleil show, and that's about it.

Glad to see it gone.

Had it not been for JB Dillingham's greed, we would be going to the Chiefs and Royals games in the west bottoms. Kemper was plan B, in the case that Dillingham didn't get a few extra "thou." That really kept us from getting the rolling roof. (Besides, the history behind the Municipal Auditorium is too boring/effective for elected officials to understand.)

Evidently, (Stockyard) meat was pricy, and still is!

Yeah, in 1979 during a bad storm. Wasn't the entire roof though.

I was unaware that the glass atrium was just added back in 1997 during a major renovation. Crazy that they're tearing the place down.

It was a shitty renovation really. The Glass thing was ok nothing special and they put cheap padding on some of the seats.

Shit, according to what I read on Wikipedia that renovation cost more than the original construction of the place. Of course, that's 1970's dollars vs 1990's dollars. The modification to the exoskeleton was pretty freaking significant, and the glass definitely made it more attractive from the outside. But yeah, I can't speak for the inside at all since I've never been in the place.

Titty Meat
10-25-2011, 11:34 PM
Yea it probably was a little more attractive from the outside other than that inside was pretty meh. It was enjoyable to watch a hockey game unless there was more than 10,000 or so the concourse would be pretty packed and it was hard to get through and the rest rooms were crowded as well.

Titty Meat
10-25-2011, 11:36 PM
Man that place saw some historical people too: Republican convention, Elvis, Micheal Jackson, Layne Staleys last performance. I can assure you the Sprint Center will never see such musically talented people.

Omaha did something similar, in 1996 they spent quite a bit of money spiffing up the outside of the old Civic Auditorium, but on the inside it was still the same cramped, outdated piece of crap. Then a few years later they built the Qwest Center. Didn't make a damn bit of sense. At least KC milked another decade out of Kemper before they built their new arena.
