View Full Version : Chiefs Blow This Team Up

This team is an embarrassment. They have the built in excuse of the early injuries to stars suffered, but there are far more holes than that. If Scott Pioli isn't willing to put a good team on the field, he should be fired. The AFC West is horribly bad and we are fighting for last. Additionally Crennel's scheme is awful. They get no QB pressure in a league where QB pressure is key. They play the bend, don't break run defense, which is as effective as the prevent defense is against the pass. We should turn over at least 15 plays next year. IMO all these players should not be in a Chiefs uniform next year:

Matt Cassel
Anthony Becht
Amon Gordon
Kelly Gregg
Tyson Jackson
Thomas Jones
Ryan Lilja
Dexter McCluster
Jon McGraw
Jake O'Connell
Sabby Piscatelli
Barry Richardson
Casey Wiegmann
Demorrio Williams

I'm giving a benefit of the doubt to some of our younger players.

I really think we are in about the same position as the Jets were the year before they took Sanchez. Prob. not as good on d but we have the playmakers when we get everyone back and healthy.

I think the passrusher stuff would change if we would change up the defense a little bit.

We can't stop the run. We have no TE depth in a league where the TE is the top mismatch. Richardson isn't the only problem on the O-line. We have too many players on our roster that shouldn't even be in the league that are getting important minutes for us.

We can't stop the run.

We can, actually. Coming into this game we were 12th in YPC allowed, and that's without a true run-stuffing safety back there like Berry.

That's not horrible. We still need a NT, but our run D is good enough if we actually had the two things you need to win a championship:

1. A QB
2. A pass rush.

Look at the backend of almost every roster in the NFL and you will find McGrawws and Langfords. Problem with us right now is that they are forced to play significant time.

I'd like to see Gaither at RT(which has to be coming sooner than later) and Hudson at C.

The Packers defense is horrible. The fact that their offense is on another planet is keeping them rolling.

11-13-2011, 07:12 PM
The defense gave up 17 points.

That's a decent outing for them. They desperately need another passrusher at OLB and they need to replace Dorsey and Gregg with people who can provide some swerve on the DL. But for the most part, this is a defense that can compete with those pieces.

It's the offense that looks lost. Cassel takes too many sacks. The right tackle is an embarrassment. Depth at RB and TE is a must, and we could use some more talent down-roster at WR.

Okay, I put a shitload of time into this a few days ago.... this seems as good a place as any to post it.

Positions to address this offseason

QB:

Cassel is under contract through 2015
Cassel needs to be traded or cut. He may be a serviceable back-up elsewhere, but he can no longer start for this team and his presence as a backup may hamper the leadership capability of the new starter.

Palko is a restricted free agent in 2012
Palko has no place in the NFL let alone on this team. He should not be resigned.

Stanzi is under contract through 2015.
Stanzi needs to step up. He should start the first half of the season next year at a minimum assuming we draft a franchise QB (unless we make a play for Luck.)

This leaves two roster spots to be filled.

RB:

Charles is under contract through 2016.
Charles needs to be used as part of a committee with Battle and McClain.

Battle is under an undisclosed contract.
Battle needs a three to four year extension as long as the price is right.

McClain is an unrestricted free agent in 2012.
McClain needs a three to four year extension. It shouldn’t be difficult considering the level of free agent RBs that are likely to be available.

McCluster is under contract through 2013.
Well what can you say? I, for one, am willing to give this experiment one more year on a much more limited basis. He can’t effectively backup Charles’ role, however.

Jones is an unrestricted free agent in 2012.
Jones is encouraged to enjoy a happy retirement somewhere far away from my football team.

This leaves one roster spot to be filled.

WR:

Bowe is an unrestricted free agent in 2012.
Bowe should have the franchise tag applied. Depending on his contract demands and the available market, he should either be traded or extended.

Breaston is under contract through 2015.
Breaston has proven to be a valuable weapon both playing outside and in the slot. Given a full off-season, we need to incorporate this versatility into the offense further.

Baldwin is under contract through 2015.
Baldwin is showing that he can be a weapon, but his focus still needs to be improving getting off of press coverage. His route running has improved already, but when that’s all you focus on for a couple months, I suppose that is to be expected.

Colbert is under an undisclosed contract.
Colbert has proven himself worthy of a number three roster spot. Fortunately, we suddenly have a dearth of talent at WR, so he can occupy our number four spot.

Copper is under contract through 2013.
Copper is more of a special teamer than a wide receiver. I expect he will be kept on because it will take more than one offseason to fill the holes in our roster. However, I am open to new blood here.

Urban is an unrestricted free agent in 2012.
Urban is replaceable from where I’m sitting.

This leaves one to two roster spots to be filled.

TE:

Moeaki is under contract through 2013.
Moeaki needs to stay healthy. However, he is an integral part of this offense when he is.

Pope is under and undisclosed contract.
Pope is an acceptable backup tight-end and should maintain his roster spot.

O’Connell is under an undisclosed contract.
As far as I’m concerned this roster spot is up for grabs. O’Connell consistently disappoints.

Becht is under an undisclosed contract, which I assume is for one year.
As far as the Chiefs are concerned, apparently this roster spot is up for grabs.

This leaves one to two roster spots to be filled.

OT:
Albert is under contract through 2012.
Albert should be considered for extension at the end of this season. He certainly is playing at an above-average level.

Gaither is an unrestricted free agent in 2012.
Gaither provides quality, swing-tackle depth. He should be extended if he doesn’t demand a ridiculous check.

Richardson is an unrestricted free agent in 2012
Richardson certainly should not be a starter, and it’s questionable whether or not he even belongs on the roster, even as a backup. I would cut him outright.

Maneri is under a reserve/future contract
I can’t say I actually know enough about Maneri to determine his roster status, so I will say he probably should keep his roster spot as a developmental player.

This leaves one roster spot to be filled.

OG/C

Asamoah is under contract through 2013
Asamoah has played at a serviceable level up to the Miami game and should maintain his roster spot.

Lilja is under contract through 2012
Lilja seems hit and miss, performance wise. However, he certainly is serviceable and should maintain his roster spot.

Hudson is under contract through 2014
Hudson provides valuable depth at both guard and center.

Weigmann is an unrestricted free agent in 2012
Weigmann just can’t keep physically big enough anymore. It is time for him to hang up the cleats.

This leaves one roster spot to be filled.

DE

Dorsey is under contract through 2012
Dorsey should be evaluated for either trade or extension. “Trade Dorsey?!” you exclaim. I know, I have been amongst his staunchest supporters here. However, while his play has been above-average to good, the amount of money he would tie up may be a little much given our system.

Jackson is under contract through 2014
Jackson seems to have come into his own , right on schedule. I hope he continues to develop and improve. I understand why many say he will never live up to his draft position; however, in retrospect, given the weakness of the class, it was probably a solid pick. I will be amongst the first to eat crow on it.

Gilberry is an unrestricted free agent in 2012
What happened to Gilberry anyway? If Romeo thinks he can turn him back around, you should extend him. If not, it is time to let him go.

Bailey is under contract through 2014
I can’t really say I’ve seen enough of Bailey to evaluate him. However, he certainly has the physical traits to warrant a spot as a developmental player.

Bair is under an undetermined contract
I can’t evaluate Bair, so I’m going to assume he gets his roster spot back next year.

This leaves one possible roster spot to be filled.

NT

Gordon is under an undisclosed contract
Gordon has played well thus far in 2011 and should be extended.

Powe is under contract through 2014
Powe certainly did enough in preseason to warrant a roster spot.

Gregg is an unrestricted free agent in 2012
Gregg has played better than anticipated; however, we need to get younger here. I would let him go.

This leaves one roster spot to be filled.

OLB

Hali is under contract through 2015
Hali is the man!

Houston is under contract through 2014
Houston shows flashes and was certainly a good pickup in the third round. He is improving in coverage and I expect he will grow into the pass-rusher we all hoped he could be. He is certainly worthy of his roster spot.

Sheffield is under contract through 2013
Sheffield showed flashes in preseason and deserves his roster spot

Studebaker is under contract through 2013
Studebaker is a developing player who should maintain his roster spot.

LB

Johnson is under contract through 2015
Johnson has been awesome this year.

Belcher is a restricted free agent in 2012
Belcher should be extended.

Siler is under an undisclosed contract
Siler would compete with Belcher for his spot in 2012 and, even if he lost he would provide excellent depth. He should be extended if healthy and he checks out.

Williams is under contract through 2012
Williams is an average player. I would cut him if Greenwood or Miller were ready to take snaps.

Greenwood is a restricted free agent in 2012
The coaches and management will have to make a decision about Greenwood, as I haven’t been able to evaluate him.

Miller is under an undisclosed contract
Miller is another player I have not seen enough of to evaluate him.

This leaves one roster spot to be filled.

CB

Flowers is under contract through 2016
Flowers will obviously remain on the roster.

Carr is an unrestricted free agent in 2012
Carr should be extended before he hits the market.

Arenas is under contract through 2013
Arenas is a serviceable nickel back and kick returner. He should maintain his roster spot.

Daniels is under an undisclosed contract
Daniels has been toasted a few times but is a serviceable fourth corner. However, I would cut him if an appropriate replacement came about..

Brown is under contract through 2014
I have not seen enough of Brown to evaluate him. I am going to assume he keeps his roster spot.

This may open up one roster spot.

S

Berry is under contract through 2015
Berry, we miss you! Seriously, who actually understood exactly how important he was to our scheme until his injury?

Lewis is under contract through 2013
Lewis is another player who is under-appreciated. He has performed at a serviceable level and given what occurred when he was out hurt…

McGraw is an unrestricted free agent in 2012
Well, bye.

Piscatelli is under an undisclosed contract.
Why hasn’t he been cut yet, anyway? He’s not good and he is obviously being a bad influence.

Washington is under contract through 2012
Say, is this experiment over yet? I mean, I liked that Carl/Herm took a flyer on him, but its time to find a replacement.

Langford is under an undisclosed contract
Langford is a player on the roster bubble. He is a young project who I can’t say I’ve seen enough of to evaluate.

This opens three to four roster spots.

K/P/LS

Succop is a restricted free agent in 2012
Succop should be extended. The guy is clutch.

Colquitt is under contract through 2012
Colquitt is having a rare down-year. He should be considered for extension at the end of 2012.

Gafford is under contract through 2012
I can only remember one snap he has blown, so I guess he can keep his roster spot.

So we need to resign:
Battle, McClain, Bowe, Gaither, Gilberry, Belcher, Greenwood, Carr

The following players are under an undisclosed contract but should remain on the team:
Colbert, Pope, Bair (?), Gordon, Siler, Miller, Langford (?)

This leaves a total of 14-17 roster spots to be filled.

QB – 2
RB – 1
WR – 2
TE – 2
OT – 1
OG/C – 1
DE – 0-1
NT – 1
LB – 1
CB – 0-1
S – 3-4

QB – I would address QB purely though the draft, including drafting a first –round QB
RB – There will be tempting free agents available; however, we are deep enough at RB to take a late round stab at a playmaker.
WR – There is a bevy of free agent WRs that should be available. However, these spots are largely depth and these players need to be able to play special teams. I would think that one of these spots should be reallocated to offensive line depth. If Haley finds someone in the draft he loves, by all means, let him make the pick.
TE – Really, one of these spots is for depth and the other is for special teams. Therefore, pick a late-round tight-end and use the leftover roster spot on the best available player.
OT – We need to draft a tackle in the worst way.
OG/C – We should obtain a center in free agency. Scott Wells or Nick Hardwick could both fit our scheme, imo. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dan Koppen here either. At guard, perhaps Ben Grubbs could fit the bill.
DE – It seems that the 3-4 DE pickings will be slim in free agency. Perhaps Olshansky or Carriker could be fits.
NT – I would look at drafting a NT in this draft. It seems deep.
LB – We should be able to find a quality fit in the draft.
CB – We should be able to take a high-risk developmental player in the draft.
S – There is plenty of help in free agency this season. Can we get it reasonably cheap? If not, hit the draft.

My two cents:

#1. Get a quarterback. That's a must. Im all for drafting a quarterback in the first round. Im also all for giving Stanzi a shot. They just need to get rid of Cassel. Anybody but him at QB next year.

#2. Reconstruct the whole Oline.

#3. Get a passrusher. Outside of Hali they got nobody to get to the QB.

#4. Get another linebacker to play in the middle next to DJ. All in all, Lbing corps needs to be a bit revamped.

#5. Finally, draft a NT.

This leaves a total of 14-17 roster spots to be filled.

WR – 2
TE – 2
OT – 1
OG/C – 1
DE – 0-1
NT – 1
LB – 1
CB – 0-1

Say again....

This years draft is shaping up to be pretty loaded on alot of positions we need to upgrade.

When a player like Hightower from Alabama is projected to go in the mid 2 round its gonna be a deep draft.

I heard this last year.

Meanwhile Hudson sits on the bench, Houston has no technique, some kid who hunts coons on an island gets run over and hasn't taken many snaps the last 4 games and Stanzi and Powe have been inactive every single game. Yey draft.

My post had nothing to do with the draft we just had. I was talking about the talent that will be in the upcoming draft. Whether we take the right guys is to be determined.

Pretty good take but I can't agree on Lilja. He's not going to accept being a backup, and is not good enough to be a starter. You say that the D-Line needs help but yet you want to retrain everyone except Gregg. Dorsey and Jackson have been a little better against the run, but we get no pressure on a pass rush. I would call Belcher serviceable, but not an every down LB like he is now. We need someone better in coverage to free up DJ to blitz occassionally.

We come up with about the same # of players to be replaced. We can only fix some of this in the draft. This team is going to need to get off its pocketbook and spend within 7 figures of the cap, not 8. I see the defense as hit and miss. I know Berry fixes a lot of evils, but Crennel needs to go. You need to scheme for the personnel that you have. Your front four has one person that can bring pressure.

A competent QB masks a lot of problems.

Solve the QB problem and you don't have to blow up the entire team.

I don't believe that. Certainly its the biggest piece and needs to be replaced, but this team has several holes which the front office thought were going to be ok. We have too many players on this team which should not even be in the NFL.

Are you saying we need to replace 50 players? If so that's a ridiculous total bereft of any grasp of reality. We have more than 3 players to keep on this team.

those are my three fav players on the roster.

i'm sure there would be other keepers with decent coaching.

there's a bunch that need to go as well as coaches tho.

I can't believe I live within 10 miles of someone as retarded as you are. Go blow yourself up drama boy. I'm sick of you stinking up my air.

Looks like you didn't even read the first post. Cutting 14-15 players is a pretty significant change. I'm not going to blame this team's crapitude on special teamers or practice squad guys.

I will. The fact that some of those guys are having to play significant minutes def. means they should get some of the heat.

This is pure speculation on your part.

You say that the D-Line needs help but yet you want to retrain everyone except Gregg. Dorsey and Jackson have been a little better against the run, but we get no pressure on a pass rush.
That is because Gordon is solid depth that can play both NT/DE.
You will also note I call for exploration of a Dorsey trade. I also state that Gilberry needs to be evaluated on an ongoing basis. Bailey, Bair and Powe are project players. It does us no good to cut them.

I would call Belcher serviceable, but not an every down LB like he is now. We need someone better in coverage to free up DJ to blitz occassionally.

You're right. We need our safety back and some safety depth. Your banger won't be in on passing situations and Belcher typically isn't, if you watch closely. He's subbed out for a nickel package.

I think Crennel's scheme is outdated. However, the loss of Berry has a HUGE impact on the flexibility within his scheme and it's hard to use this year as a judge of how effective his scheme can be given that fact. More than anything, this defense needs more lineman who can collapse the pocket, and who can do it consistently. More importantly and an oft-overlooked aspect of free agent spending: THERE HAVEN'T BEEN ANY IMPACT FA'S FOR US TO BUY. Just saying.

O.city

The defense needs:

A. For Berry to come back healthy and get back to where he was. He will just hope its sooner than later.

B. A NT who can push the pocket and demand double teams. A massive run stuffing NT fixes the dline and probably the ILB's.

C. Depth. Draft/sign the best players available.

I agree with some of these guys on your list, as I'm sure the organization does as well. Piscatelli, Wiegman, and Lilja aren't pulling weight. McCluster is about as close to being a bust as one guy can get without officially being labeled. O'Connell and McGraw are pretty useless, and Jones is just well past his prime. I wouldn't call that blowing up the team though.

As you stated, the youth gets the benefit of the doubt. If they started cutting all of those guys, that would blow the team up and would be a horrible idea.

P.S. I don't hate Cassel as much as everyone around here seems to, but he's not getting the job done. There are a lot of drops and bad protection that aren't his fault, but I'm starting to understand what you guys are saying. I don't think he's the answer, and he's definitely vastly overpaid.
