Starts at 9 (or shortly after) on ESPN2. Mizzou looked good thumping Notre Dame by 29 last night. This should be a tough test though, against a higher ranked ranked Cal team.

Yes they are. Not getting into foul trouble 4 minutes into the game seems to really be a smart strategy. Going inside instead of slinging up 3's every posession seems to be a smart strategy. Who'd a thunk?

Wow. I'm just.. shocked at how this team has congealed, ESPECIALLY through a coaching transition. If this were Haith's team for the past four years, this improvement would be astounding. But to go through a coaching change and be this good? Im really happy. And I realize the "way to early" implications of that, but I'm happy regardless. Laying off the full-court press has allowed these guys to compose themselves and really show their talents outside of a system that requires them to do things that they're not used to doing. Now, they're able to play intense D in a half-court setting, giving up fewer layups, and on offense they're showing a better ability to attack the zone and use their speed to their advantage. Off-ball movement is 100% better than last year, and our team's unselfish manner can really excel.

atleast we got a head coach now right?

im not mad about the hire, it couldve been better but i think haith is a guy who could if he is successful,,, stick around for more than 10 years,,, one thing id like to know is how much mizzou is going to pay him with his initial contract.

Wow, The Mizzou fan base is seriously pissing me off right now; not mike alden/haith but the mizzou fan base itself. As we now got a coach people are going ape shit over the fact that we didn't get a coach on the same level as what we thought we could get. Yes im not happy but really did you think we were going to do a whole lot better? The only real pull we got here at mizzou for 1st-3rd tier coaches is our facilities, money, and our poorly talented recruiting bases in kc and stl. Why would one of those coaches not want to come here? I'll tell you why, because they saw what happens if you don't succeed here in mizzou; by succeeding, sadly, i mean winning a championship. Look at Mike Andersons situation, he takes a program from rock bottom after quin snyders reign and elevated it to be an annual tournament attendee. This year, the tigers obviously didn't exceed expectations put on them by the fans and press. THis resulting in alot of hate towards MA, which ultimately resulted in him packing and leaving to arkansas. I don't blame him with the amount of hate he was receiveing from the fan base, why would you want to stay? I brought up the situation with Kim English yesterday, the guy obviously had a bad year with mizzou and has been punched with hate mail for everything he has done wrong over the season. Throughout all of this Kim English has continued to respect and show support for his hateful mizzou fans. What I'm trying to say is criticizing people like KE, MA, or our new coach doesn't help the situation at all, it will rather be ignored or it will be took seriously and eventually hurt mizzou. Support your team when it has problems don't talk trash and instigate conflict. so support your team and new coach Frank Haith to a brand new era, or **** you, i thought our fans were better than this.

ive never hated on kimmie, the dude is the very loyal to our program, even though he did have an off year, we shouldn't be bashing him 24/7, we should be supporting him like a good fan base does. just sayin to all the haters out there, no one in particular. i have a feeling he's going to come back next year and dominate.

i havent been persuaded or been fed propaganda at all. This is the same pitch i've been on since sunday night, you can't judge a man from what he did in one of the tougher conferences at a school where he isn't even recognized. You got to give him a chance and support him, negativity is not helping the cause at all.

and i don't care if my grammar isn't correct, if i wanted tips on writing i'll tell you

this will turn out just the way last years chiefs draft was. Everybody hated what we got back then, even though they only knew the players names. Once training camp came along and they hear that the rookies are doing good, they finally stopped talking shit on all the players, notably McCluster, and we ended with one of teh best draft classes in the NFL 2011 season.

just sayin ._.

wow, **** you guys, you'll jump on the bandwagon for team haith, just wait.

"Missouri's good. We knew it was a tough matchup from the get-go, and there's nothing we can do about that," Montgomery said. "It's a tough matchup for a lot of people."

The lows for Cal:

The 39-point margin of defeat equals the Bears' fourth-worst in a game since 1937. (Worst ever was 101-50 to Stanford, coached by Montgomery, in 2000.)

It was their worst loss in 106 games under Montgomery, exceeding 109-77 loss at UW last year.

It was their worst nonconference loss ever.

Went to the game last night, and I can't even tell you how hard these guys play. I've never been that high on Flip. He was just too short with too small of a wingspan to play in Anderson's system. That said, he is fantastic under the new system.

The guy gave everything he had on defense. The whole team did. They play defense with their feet and their knees and their hips and their chests. It wasn't a bunch of lazy reaches trying to swat at steals. Pressey was in grills. If they moved an inch, he moved an inch. If he slipped, be was up so quickly that he didn't lose position.
Cal has a ton of size, and they beat us up on the boards. Nearly half their buckets were on second and third chance putbacks, but it wasn't due to lack of effort or position on our part. They are just. Huge. When Haith brought in Steve Moore, the game was over. That guy locked down the lane and played out of his mind. He was our most valuable player last night regardless of what the stats say.

It was also great to see us win big when Denmon didn't have to carry the team. He played well, but he was just another part of the team. I hope he can settle into that role. At one point, I commented to my friend that we were up 15, and Denmon only had 3 or 4 points and that I hope he didn't feel like he needed to "get his". He immediately chucked up a contested 3 that. Led to a fast break where he had to foul on the other end. It was one of literally onlt two or three bad shots we took all night.

What a tournament. 68 point total margin of victory over very legit competition in incredible. Poor Bob Fescoe. He's got to worry about the Tigers hurting more that KU's strength of schedule.

How much of their success do you think can be attributed to a) the importance of senior leadership and maturity and b) not running a system that looks like a bunch of Chupacabras trying to fuck goats in the Mexican flatlands?

The system is a big improvement. We look like we're incredibly well-conditioned, but we don't nullify it by running ourselves ragged for 40 minutes a game for 35 games.

I also think that English is finally healthy. He had a torn ligament in his hand last season, and he couldn't shoot. It looked like he was trying to find other ways to contribute, but he wound up just trying to do too much. Because there was no structure to the offense, there was no opportunity to be a floor general.

He just looks like a different guy out there now. When Flip is getting too riled up, English is there to settle him down. Its the same for Dixon to a lesser extent. The team just plays well together, and they seem to genuinely enjoy being teammates on the court. They make the extra pass. They move without the ball and trust that their teammates will find them. They help and rotate well on defense. They even make free throws. Its really too bad Bowers is hurt, not just because he would help the team, but because I think he really misses playing with these guys.

I think suitcase mike's full court press is a terribly flawed style to rely on, but playing it for a few years helped our current players in transitioning to Haith's half-court style. We still play with intensity and look to run when we create a turnover, but we stay in front of our man better and don't give up the easy baskets that the press tends to allow.

We also look like we actually have an identity on offense which is helping to get the most out of our senior leadership. We run screens, make the extra pass (or 2 or 3), cut to the basket, play inside-out - coaching we haven't since Norm was here.

Last night was the first opportunity I've had to watch them this season and I was immediately impressed on how disciplined they seemed to be. They got a little sloppy midway through the second half, but then settled down and went on another huge run.

I'm excited for the possibility of what this team can do this season. I'm sure they'll run into some rough patches, so I'm curious how they will respond.

Stanley Nickels
11-23-2011, 09:23 AM
I think you've got to give it to Haith-- a guy I admittedly was against-- for a number of reasons:
1. Transitioning Anderson's philosophies into his style and having the team buy into it,
2. Taking a team with high aspirations-- which could've been in a downward spiral from losing Anderson, then not getting Painter, then getting an underwhelming hire-- and creating an team atmosphere far more congealed than ever under Anderson.
3. Steve Moore. Having coaches believe in and encourage the kid has reaped tremendous results. His technical ability, court awareness, and even dexterity, are worlds better than last year.

It's still FAR too early to render any verdict, but I'd classify myself as somewhere above Haith critic, and just below Haith believer.

We got lucky that a lot of their tip-backs didn't go in. If we allow better post players (i.e. Robinson) to do that, it'll be a different story. If Moore can step up like that when needed, it will be huge.

I saw Mizzou-Notre Dame, and watched the Cal game last night. Mizzou's guards are quick. Real quick. If Ratcliffe gets in foul trouble early, teams with better big men will give Mizzou a lot of trouble. Moore had a career game last night, but he's not going to be that good every night. English is hard to figure. Sometimes he's great, sometimes he can't hit his ass cheeks with either hand. Denmon is their best player. He's solid. I think watching Mizzou play KU and K-State will be big fun this year.

I can't wait to see English go away.

WTF? He's the leader of this team.

I look forward to the day when we don't have to see his mug around. Up and down play (up if we are lucky) unjustified arrogance and a passive aggressive attutude towards fans.

Wow. I don't get that at all. He's easily my favorite off-the-court Tiger ever. He has a great sense of humor, is very intelligent, and seems to be a very likeable guy. Plus he works his ass off. He's the ultimate gym rat.

**** off. That guy was an absolute piece of shit last year. He was easily one of the worst starters on any team in a BCS conference. When you play like a heartless, gutless pussy you will get bashed and rightfully so.

Perhaps you need to STFU, because sure as shit is brown I don't remember you coming to his defense last year. What does last year have to do with anything? English's play should have shut up his haters. Period.

Yes, I used to cling to his freshman year as well. This isn't a shot at you. It is the truth.

Say it with me, Mizzou fans....there is no "c" in RATLIFFE

It's still FAR too early to render any verdict, but I'd classify myself as somewhere above Haith critic, and just below Haith believer.Haith is doing it with a paper-thin bench and without his best player, IMO. Haith's staff is supposed to be good at working with bigs and I think the proof is in the pudding. MU will lose some games due to lack of depth, poor shooting, and being undersized across the board, but Haith's crew has already worked wonders.

Dude took a LOT of heat from fans last year and seemed to still have a pretty positive attitude. I'm sure his Twitter DMs were a cornucopia of stupid. I'm ok with him as a person and I'm really excited to see him apparently turn his play around.

He had one bad season, and it was when he tore a ligament in his shooting hand.

And the guy clearly seems to love Mizzou. He even came to Gameday last year with a sign.

I don't get the hate for him that some fans seem to have.

This.

I think having played for Anderson has some staying power when it comes to forcing turnovers.

Haith looks like he has installed an offense that it a big improvement over the last two years when The Mizzou half-court offense brought back unpleasant memories of standing around without much of a plan just like the Quin Snyder Jimmie McKinney era.

Fun game to watch and fun to listen to Dickie V commentating on a game when Mizzou is playing well.

You know, that's interesting. I didn't think there was either. Then this morning I was reading the Daily Californian about the game (Cal's newspaper) and read this:

http://www.dailycal.org/2011/11/23/mizzou-hands-bears-first-loss-in-39-point-romp/

"The first half also showed off the talents of senior Steve Moore. The 6-foot-7, 267-pound center scored a career-high 10 points in the first half before his hometown crowd, tossing in a three as two early fouls strapped starting forward Ricardo Ratcliffe to the bench."

So I figured that's how to spell the guy's name. I think you should call them and chew their asses.
