You can't retire every damn jersey. The Chiefs have already retired way too many.

I'm not talking about Dave Szott here or Kimble Anders, we're talkin Will Shields. Top 5 best of all time for us.

You retire the numbers of legends. Shields was a stalwart. He is a HOFer.

The Chiefs have almost as many retired numbers as the Giants and have been around < half the Giants' tenure.

I'm really curious what happens in the long term when a team retires more than 47 jerseys.

Wait a minute. Did Palko just throw another pick? It's only been five seconds.

Anthony Becht wearing #88 is far worse

Heh. I was just coming in this thread to say that after that bad-news-bears tackle he just had to stuff our RB behind the LOS.

not sure if serious

In no particular order:

Len Dawson
Buck Buchanan
Bobby Bell
Willie Lanier
Derek Thomas
Tony Gonzalez

Shields does not touch that group. In the years that he and Roaf were both playing, he wasn't even the best OL on the team. His greatness is in being one of the best for a very long time, but he was never the face of the franchise.

Sine when is a Guard the face of any franchise?

Sine when is a Guard the face of any franchise?

Which is one of the reasons he is not a top 5 Chief. He plays the wrong position.

Jan Stenerud is in the HOF but he wouldn't make my top 15 Chiefs.

They need to retire Jersey #58. No other Chief defender should be allowed to have the same number as Derrick Thomas.

It is effectively, if not officially, retired.

#88 needs to be reitred as soon as TG retires as a Chief (which he will). Brecht was a complete embarrassment to #88 last night--well complete embarrassment to football in general.

Yep, never retire a number. I don't want to see three-digit jerseys in 2080.

Also, it's kind of cool to see a Chiefs #89 running down the field or a #63 stuffing a run. Brings back memories.

I agree, Mr. gblowfish.

And I wouldn't really mind a decimal system. 89 v.05 or something. Kinda like software versions.

I saw on twitter(on the rare occasion I use it) that october gonzalez is upset that someone, not being her domestic partner is wearing number 88 in KC.

I just don't think numbers should be retired except very rare circumstances. You can respect their history and contribution without it.

Not to change the subject, but if the team has retired #33 for Stone Johnson and #36 for Mack Lee Hill, why haven't they retired #37 for Joe Delaney?

And to answer the original question, I don't have a problem with it either way. You can't retire every # (10 of em are already retired in KC) and offensive lineman aren't exactly recognizable to most people. That said, we haven't actually retired an OL's # and I wouldn't hate seeing 68 retired.

I guess I'm on the fence. If we don't retire it & some scrub wears it, I can live with it. If we retire it, that's fine with me, too.

Bothers me more to see anybody other than Otis Taylor wear #89.

Bothers me that Taylor isn't in Canton...

I agree with this. Dont retire numbers unless theyre LEGENDS/top players in the league for a long time/best player on our team for multiple years/ gets killed in a car crash

I remember getting pissed watching a clip on NFLN of the last Donkey game, and for some reason, seeing Von Miller wearing #58 pissed me off. It really shouldn't, but it kinda bugged me.
