I think he was a damn good player before he broke his leg in the 2002 preseason. He was a physical player and he never played with the same kind of recklessness after the (horrible) broken leg.

If you don't remember seeing it, it was one of those "The leg doesn't have a joint there!" kind of breaks. Ugh.

It was horrible. I mean his leg snapped and just bent the wrong way. Most of the times I've seen guys get their legs bent like that, they don't play again.

After the injury he wasn't nearly as fast and seemed to have a weird galloping kind of stride.

It was just a crazy game. The energy in Arrowhead is unmatched when it's that amped up. Denver fans can think mile high is awesome, but arrowhead on that day killed it. I don't hold much hope that'll happen this Sunday, but wow would it be fun for those at the game.

If we flash, even a little, the place will come alive. If the players feed into it, the stadium would become explosive. Even that will probably not help the chiefs that much. It's David and Goliath and even though we would love the underdog win storyline, the odds are very heavy

oh, and I wish I was there that day.

I'll bet it was fun that night too! This time we just don't have the firepower. We may get up on the Packers early, but there's just no way we compete for the entire game. Unless they just turn the ball over 10 times we're not winning the game. Maybe next time.

The 1993 MNF game with the Packers was pretty good too. The Chiefs won. It was Favres first visit to Arrowhead.

Here was the opening....this was the one year that ABC dumped Hank for random music stars. This game got Sammy (what happened to my career?) Kershaw.

Forward to 1:51 for the opening of the Chiefs/Pack game.

God I miss that Marty defense....

JCharles1981
12-18-2011, 02:03 AM
Here's what I noticed:

1. The Chiefs dominated the Packers in 1996 because of the solid defense of guys like Derrick Thomas, Brian Washington, Donnie Edwards, and Neil Smith.
2. The Chiefs dominated the Packers in 2003 because of their solid offense with Trent Green, Priest Holmes, Tony Gonzalez, Eddie Kennison, and the O-line.
3. James Hasty had one great season with the Chiefs, which is why I was surprised his contract got extended after 2 consecutive lousy years following.
4. Steve Bono was very inconsistent and only played to the best of his ability when he wanted to. During the time he was with the Chiefs, more than half the time he was busy throwing interceptions, or overthrowing many of his passes.
5. Trent Green is the closest the Chiefs have come to having as good of a QB as Hall of Famer Len Dawson.
6. If you combine the 1996 Chiefs defense with the 2003 Chiefs offense, they're practically a shoe-in for the Superbowl.

Don't you mean Gunther Cunningham defense? Once he stopped being the Chiefs' DC, the defense began dwindling a little each year until 2003 when they were at their absolute worst.

No. The real joke was Carl Peterson trying to fool Chiefs fans into thinking that Gunther Cunningham was capable of turning the worst defense ever in the history of the Chiefs into being the best again, but under the mediocrity of HC Herm Edwards. Had Cunningham been DC during the Dick Vermeil years, I firmly believe our defense would not have sucked so bad. Heck, even Romeo Cremmel could have done a better job as DC for them had he been with them early last decade.

A defense has to be at least in the Top 15 before a guy like Cunningham can come in and turn them into one of the best in the league. The Chiefs' defense was already climbing towards the top when Gunther was brought in to take charge over them back in the mid-90's.

Agreed! There are a few good plays from today's game worth reveling in. I think my personal favorite was Orton magically "finding" Pope for that long strike. That's the kind of play that Cassel sees and ignores in favor of the check down, and Palko attempts and finds a way to throw an INT.
