Verizon to start charging “convenience fees”?

After the nationwide outage yesterday, it looks like Verizon is going to give its customers another reason to be mad at it: the folks over at Droid-Life have gotten their hands on snapshots showing off certain internal Verizon documents stating that it will be implementing a new “convenience fee” in the near future. According to the documents, Verizon would be charging customers and additional $2 if they pay their bills over the phone or online. If true, this would enter in effect on January 15 2012.

As to why the carrier is pulling such a move, the official reason is unclear, but fortunately there is an inconvenient way to get around this convenience fee: you can either head down to the closest Verizon store to pay your bills by hand, or you can set up auto-pay by electronic checks (ACH) for your account if you’d like to avoid this $2 fee. And while it doesn’t seem like a lot of money, nobody wants to incur any unnecessary fees in their monthly expenses, especially that wireless bills are already full of additional “fees and taxes”.

I don't understand for the life of me why they charge for online payments. Why in the world would you prefer your customers pay by check through mail?

Westar charges a similar fee and has for a long time. $2.95 to pay by Debit/Credit card. Seems stupid to me. We push our customers to pay by credit card/check card.....rather than getting the money in 7-10 days when they pay by check, we have the money in 2 days.

No. Just saying we would prefer they pay by debit/credit card because we get the money faster.

I pretty much have everything setup for autopay anyway. No fees for that. Yet.
