Such a difficult year and a great year at the same time. I saw my granddaughter be born and then 2 months later the most death and destruction I have ever witnessed in my life.

The common denominator: CP gave me shit on both. So the lesson I learned from both situations is this. There is greatness out there but there's some shitty fuckheaders along the way.

FTR, my oldest is 12 and son is 9. The grandchild is through my stepdaughter. My stepdaughter is 19 and I couldn't be prouder even though me and her mother split up.

I was alive and well. I loved and lost, but I loved more than I lost so it was a great year. More than a few times I got to look into the eyes that God made, so that's a blessing. I got to welcome troops home, I was honored to know and mourn some who didn't make it home. I got to watch my son bugle funerals for the most deserving men in the world, and watch him grow as a young man. I watched the work of God's hands guiding the hands of a skilled surgeon as he worked on my youngest son. I got to walk the halls of Children's Mercy and see the names and faces of those children who were tougher than I'll ever be. I got to coach kids in many sports and watch them grow as scouts. I got to work with our nation's veterans and try to make their lives better while they work through injury and work into mainstream life. I got to talk with many of those veterans and be there, just like those who were here for me. I got to spent time, the one thing you can't get back, with the most wonderful people on earth.

It was a good year, and I'm going to double-down on 2012...

I went through Joplin last Tuesday. Unless you've been there, you have no idea the size and scope. Simply amazing.

I hope we all have a better 2012. I think 2011 was my worst year ever, and I'm guardedly optimistic this year will be better.
