I don't think I watched any TV in the 80's. :hmmm:

Parents donated the TV to Goodwill when I entered school [somewhere mid-Happy Days] and we ended up getting one back in the house with the Commodore 64 [initially FOR ONLY computer use ;)] somewhere mid-Cosby show.

Only thing I've seen looking back to that time that I wish I'd seen first run was Hill Street Blues [though it was probably too grown up (in the 'adults talking' sense, not risque content sense)].

MASH and All in the Family I waded through in syndication, but I definitely wouldn't have been an audience for those as a kid.

Oh, in the interests of 'as good a place as anyplace else'

Messing around with internet content on my blu-ray, and came across the first season of News Radio.

Mother of good, that show came out of the box sprinting. I laughed OUT LOUD 3-4 times in the pilot alone. Didn't really forget how much I loved that show, but it was nice to be reminded specifically why.

The 90s were still my favorites. Wings, La Femme Nikita, Silk Stalkings. So 90s. I do love a few shows now mostly still sitcoms and HDTV. The Big Bang Theory is one I've gotten into lately. It's funny but it's really stupid.

A lot of those sitcoms, if you try and watch now, are so slow moving it's like, "Wow, this is it?" Half the primetime shows from the 80s are too tame for the Disney Channel these days.

I graduated in 1982 and started a job working graveyard for several years. Later in the '80's, I went back to college. I didn't have a VCR until late in the '80's. I was also single through most of the '80's so between all of that, I was never home to watch TV, I guess. Most of these shows don't ring a bell.

80's TV was quirky and stupid. Mork and Mindy, srsly?

I guess you could make a case for sitcoms but then I'll counter with Seinfeld and the like.

We have/had excellent shows such as:
Sons of Anarchy
Breaking Bad
Walking Dead
The Sopranos
Deadwood
The list goes on...

But yeah, you enjoy Laverne and Shirley or After MASH, mkay?

Every generation can make a case. People from the 50's will point at the Honeymooners and I Love Lucy but their parents will counter that with The Bickersons or The Shadow radio programs.
So, there you go. It depends on your pov and how old you are.

WKRP was kinda awesome, though.

I am exceedingly proud to say that I have never watched a main stream reality show.
I've never watched an episode of:
American Idol
Big Brother
The Bachelor
That one show where their stranded on an island.
Yadda yadda.

I have watched Pawn Stars until they started trying to act and the same goes for American Pickers. I won't watch it anymore.

Mythbusters is starting to go that route, too. I don't watch it anymore now.

i can't believe i agree. i say that cause 2000's TV was abysmal, thanks to "Reality TV". the Premium Channel Shows saw an opporunity to blow the networks out of the water and jumped on it....Good For Them.

i loved 90's TV, and there are a TON of great shows on how (mostly Premium Channels, but hey).

anythings better than the 2000's Reality TV - Horrible.

Yeah. Anybody who disagrees should watch the entirety of The Wire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Louie, and even Boardwalk Empire (which is only pretty good but in the 80s would have been FUCKING MIND-BLOWING), and if they come back and still disagree, they should stick their necktie in a paper shredder.

Seinfeld is the grandfather of Golden Age Television (comedy-wise [co-grandfather with The Simpsons, actually]), but I think it's been topped. It spawned Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, It's Always Sunny, Parks & Rec, 30 Rock, etc. All those shows took a great deal of inspiration one way or another from Seinfeld but added innovations that really took TV to another level.

Seinfeld did it without cussing or nudity or anything. Not That That Matters, but it's easier to be funny when you can go all out.

That said, CurbYour Enthusiasm absolutely has taken it to the Next Level.

Last year I managed to watch every single episode of The Fall Guy on Hulu, I actually enjoyed it. I haven't found many of my favorite shows as a kid that held up as well as it did, but they may just be a reflection of how low the others set the bar.

I first became aware of television in the early 70s. I stopped watching it heavily in the mid- to late-80s as I reached twenty. Thus, I consider these my "childhood years". Now I'm sure everyone thinks their childhood years were the most special and, obviously, things "now" or "before then" sucked. We can only go by what we experience, of course, and if you don't grow up watching today's TV--or TV of the 1950s--I'm sure it's an unfair comparison. But, just by running through a website database, let me list a few of the reasons today's TV sucks by comparison. (And you may not like all of these shows, but you can admit they all had their various audiences and were well-crafted.)

1971: All In The Family

1972: Kung Fu, M*A*S*H*, Maude, Sanford and Son, The Streets of San Francisco

1973: Kojak, Police Story, Schoolhouse Rock!

1974: Chico and the Man, Good Times, Happy Days, The Night Stalker, Land Of The Lost, Little House on the Prairie, Police Woman, The Rockford Files, The Six Million Dollar Man

1975: Baretta, Barney Miller, The Jeffersons, One Day at a Time, Saturday Night Live, Space: 1999, Starsky and Hutch, S.W.A.T., Welcome Back Kotter, Wonder Woman

1976: Alice, The Bionic Woman, Black Sheep Squadron, Charlie's Angels, Donny and Marie, Laverne & Shirley, The Muppet Show, Quincy, What's Happening!

1977: CHiPs, Fantasy Island, Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew, The Incredible Hulk, In Search of..., Grizzly Adams, The Love Boat, Lou Grant, The Man From Atlantis, Quark, Soap, Three's Company

1978: Battlestar Galactica, B.J. and the Bear, Dallas, Diff'rent Strokes, Mork and Mindy, The Paper Chase, Taxi, Vega$, The White Shadow, WKRP in Cincinnati

1979: The Dukes of Hazzard, The Facts of Life, Hart to Hart, Knots Landing, Star Blazers, Trapper John M.D.

1980: Magnum P.I.

1981: Cagney & Lacey, The Fall Guy, The Greatest American Hero, Hill Street Blues, Simon & Simon

1982: Cheers, Family Ties, Knight Rider, Newhart, Remington Steele, Silver Spoons, St. Elsewhere, T.J. Hooker

1983: The A-Team, Blackadder, Fraggle Rock, Hardcastle and McCormick, He-Man, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, V

1984: Airwolf, The Cosby Show, E/R, Highway to Heaver, Miami Vice, Murder She Wrote, Night Court, Robin of Sherwood, Transformers, Voltron, Who's The Boss?

1985: The Golden Girls, Growing Pains, MacGyver, Moonlighting, Spenser: For Hire, ThunderCats

1986: ALF, Sledge Hammer!, Pee-Wee's Playhouse

1987: Married With Children, Max Headroom, Star Trek: The Next Generation

I don't think I watched any TV in the 80's. :hmmm:

I worked the swing shift through most of the 80s so I missed pretty much every TV show there was. From seeing reruns it doesn't seem like I missed much.

I was able to forgive you for being a donk fan, but that is unacceptable.

There was an episode where the Knight Rider used x-rays to look inside a mountain. The car was showing it as a video feed, with wavy lines around it of course. I could overlook it in the old Superman cartoons. Blame the x-ray vision on background radiation or something. It was a long time ago. Nobody knew how x-rays worked. I could suspend my disbelief. But not in the 1980's. C'mon man! That episode just finally killed it for me.

I've always said that about Murder She Wrote. If you see that old woman coming get the hell out. She lives in a small town and people are constantly murdered around her. That town must be the per capita murder capital of the country. I think in real life it wouldn't take too many times before the police started to suspect her.

1. Breaking Bad
2. Mad Men
3. The Wire
4. Deadwood
5. The Shield
6. Arrested Development
7. The Office (UK)
8. The Office (US) (first few seasons anyway)

11. Freaks and Geeks

Those are in no particular order.

Traditional sitcoms are mostly shit these days but there are some damn good half hour comedy shows that IMO are far better than the old sitcom formula. Curb, Californication, Louie, Archer, The League, Always Sunny, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, Community, ect.

1. You don't like Breaking Bad? Did you even watch the whole first season?

2. Mad Men was very hard for me to get into at first. It took over a year to watch the whole first season. Once I did, I was hooked. It had something about it that I couldn't understand, but I'm glad that I stuck with it. Only show other than Lost that I've actually cried during an episode.

3. You hated The Wire? Seriously, wtf dude? How many episodes did you watch before you gave up on it? Every friend I've had that watched it thought it was boring up until they finished episode 5. After that they were hooked. It is probably the greatest masterpiece television has ever seen.

4. Man, you are on a roll. Deadwood is so good. One of the best Western TV shows I've ever seen. Probably the best if you don't count Breaking Bad.

5. The Shield and boring never belong in a sentence together unless it is this exact sentence that I am writing. Some of the most compelling action TV has ever seen. Right on par with something like 24 (as far as the action is concerned).

6. Arrested Development not funny? Are you fucking serious?

7 & 8. The Office not funny? Are you fucking serious?

9. Well at least you have a fucking ounce of sense in you. BSG is one of the best SciFi series of all time.

10. I feel you on Lost. I loved it so much the whole first run through. I cried a single tear of sadness when the last episode ended. I wasn't as impressed with my second watch through.

11. Well I would tell you to get Freaks and Geeks on netflix, but apparently, you don't like good television, so I won't.

Where's T.J. Hooker? I was often saddened by the fact Shatner had been downgraded from Captaining a Starship to driving a Dodge Diplomat Patrolcar. Only upside was a very young and fresh-faced Heather Locklear. Long before her "groupie" days of banging Tommy Lee and Ritchie Sambora.
