The Saints scored about 23 points average in away games, except at the Vikings game they scored 42 points. If they score only that much today they could be in trouble.

The 49ers scored about mid-20s in their home games. They are hoping that their offense would score couple TDs, 1 or 2 FGs, and their defense could yield at least a pick six.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

In a normal year the field at Candlestick would be slick and unsure. The Saints would be totally out of their element. But due to the lack of rain in California this year, the field is in great condition. The footing will be very sure. That works for the Saints.

Plus, who you going with in a big playoff game...Alex Smith or Drew Brees???

Saints 27-17

Count out a home team that plays great defense in the playoffs at your own risk. Id pick the Saints, but this is no sure thing. Btw, the unbeatable Saints lost to the Bucs and Rams on the road this year

Saints slower off turf, rain or dry. First Defense the Saints have played in weeks. Keep Brees of the field and grind the clock with the Gore running game. Guaranteed Lock Niners over Saints.

The Saints lost las year in the playoffs on the road to a 7-9 team the Chiefs stomped. Anything can happen.

This game is going to be a close one, and it will probably come down to which QB can make plays late.

As someone else asked, who are you going to take?

Brees or Smith?

The Bad Guy
01-14-2012, 11:24 AM
I just think it's going to come down to the defenses at the end.

The 49ers defensive speed is going to force Brees into some uncomfortable spots. Brees will turn the ball over when pressured enough.

the Saints defense just isn't good at all. Their deficiencies get exploited today by Gore and Vernon Davis.

Brees will make the plays because he's not the game manager. But Brees will make the wrong kind of plays. The mistakes. Alex Smith wont make mistakes.

Let me admit, I'm proud of the 49ers and I'm happy for them to be back in the playoffs, and becoming relevant again. San Fran is a team that deserves to be where they are.

Yeah they play win a weak division, but they've beaten some great teams this year, and I'm not sure if there's a team with better chemistry in the playoffs right now. I like the Saints a lot, but this time I'm hoping the 49ers can pull it off.

Yes, Brees tends to make more mistakes because hes constantly pushing and challenging a defense. Alex Smith plays it safe.

This is a fascinating matchup to me.

You mean the guy who threw the ball more than 200 times more, threw for a higher completion percentage, and threw fewer picks than the other guy is more mistake prone?

I'm missing something.

How's that work?

The '09 Saints defense ranked 25th in the league.

This year's Saints D ranked 24th.

That '09 defense did create more turnovers.

It was obvious from my COUCH that he was hurt the instant he was hit.

The entire field - both teams and all of the officials - were more worried about where the ball was than the defenseless player at the bottom of the pile.

They're either interested in limiting injuries or they are not. It's pretty obvious the NFL is only worried about limiting injuries to their cash cows...

The Saints can still make it.

Yep. The Niners have to continue to keep the throttle wide open.

This is why I don't bet or predict many games. You can't ever predict turnovers.

The Niners led the league in turnovers forced. And committed the fewest turnovers in the league.

I've been saying it all week. This is just like people overlooking Pittsburgh's terrible road performances last week. The Niners are nasty, they are a legitimate Super Bowl defense. And the Saints have not been a 40 ppg juggernaut playing outdoors on grass.

Still a long way to go though. You blink once and the Saints will torch you. I thought the Niners problem would be scoring points.

Wild Card and divisional playoff rounds are always dominated by home teams. The Niners were a great team all year.

It's not like they've been horrible. But their last outdoors game this year was an ugly 22-17 win over Tennessee. They lost to Tampa Bay 26-20. Only beat Jacksonville 23-10.

Yeah. No way I was picking a team that has never won a road playoff game and their offense is based on being in their sterile home dome. If they wanted to be SB bound, they needed that 1-seed.

I did pick the steelers though dang it!
