Back in my day we paid for our Carfax accounts. And if we couldn't afford one, we built our own damn cars, then wrote our own Carfaxes. If ya can't trust your own craftsmanship, then what CAN you trust? Some stupid miserable mechanic puke who gets paid like shit only to face people who say, "Show me the Carfax?" Don't think so.

In the end, you ended up getting a quality car with a great Carfax built by your own sweat and blood. And it was a hell of a lot better quality, that's for sure. You ended up knowing the workings of every single nut and bolt in that machine, telling you a whole lot more than some stupid Carfax hunk of junk they got today.

CARFAX is worthless. Do not rely on it. No database exists that is very good for checking out a car. However, if you must use one, the best is by far any of the NMVTIS reporters. http://www.vehiclehistory.gov/

If you are buying an older or suspicious car, look for a reporter that also includes salvage information.

The database isn't 100% yet, but it blows CARFAX away. CARFAX is basically a scam.

If you want a reliable title history, you will have to buy it from the state, but it is a pain in the ass when you aren't doing it regularly because you have to get a security code.

This is all you need to know. Pay a good mechanic to look over the car for you instead.
