Another Report Says Chiefs' Bill Muir Is Retiring
by Joel Thorman on Feb 1, 2012 12:37 PM CST

Well, this is strange. Really strange.

On January 1, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported via league sources that Kansas City Chiefs offensive line coach Bill Muir was "likely" to retire.

On January 24, Bob Gretz of BobGretz.com quoted Muir as saying that he will not retire and he plans to return to the Chiefs, not as offensive coordinator, but as offensive line coach.

And now, February 1, we have another report that Muir will retire. Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com has the report.

So...Muir's retiring...he's not retiring....and now he's retiring.

Anyone know the truth here?

A source told FOXSports.com that Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Bill Muir is retiring.

Muir, 69, completed his 34th NFL season in 2011. Muir's other NFL coaching stops include Tampa Bay (2002-2008), the New York Jets (1995-2001), Philadelphia (1992-1994), Indianapolis (1989-1991), Detroit (1985-1988) and New England (1982-1984). His NFL career began in 1978 as a Buccaneers scout.

The Chiefs began seeking a new offensive coordinator last month when Romeo Crennel was named head coach. Former Kansas City head coach Todd Haley named Muir his offensive coordinator last season but continued to play a major role directing the team’s offense.

In other NFL coaching news, a source told FOXSports.com that Oakland is hiring Houston’s Frank Pollack as its new offensive line coach. Pollack has served as the Texans’ assistant offensive line coach the past five seasons.

May end up being related to whoever they hire as OC and based on what type of blocking the OC wishes to implement. If that doesn't mesh with Muir, he may step aside. That would be my guess...

Bill Muir, last year's offensive coordinator for the #Chiefs, has told the team he's retiring. Story to come at http://kansascity.com

We should already have his replacement on hand. Like many things since Pioli got here, the Chiefs are dragging their feet and grabbing what's left over on the bargain rack.

It's weird that Muir was scouting at the Senior Bowl if he was planning on retiring. Maybe he was just taking notes for the next guy.

Pioli shopping for clothes and OCs:
"Hey.....this sweater fits. I mean, it's a little tight in the shoulders...but. ..but. Yeah.....definitely. It definitely fits. I think"

Yeah, I don't think so.

Former Chiefs offensive coordinator Bill Muir has retired.
Muir was informed he wouldn't return as coach Romeo Crennel's coordinator, and was apparently unwilling to accept the demotion to offensive line coach. Muir, 69, was a coach since 1968, and in the NFL since 1978. He spent 28 years as an NFL line coach, teaching a power-blocking scheme on the front five.

What's interesting, re: reports of Bill Muir's retirement, is that just last week he told Bob Gretz he was not retiring.

Could be a number of factors. Perhaps he had a change of heart, especially since they are back to the grind of hitting the road and doing player evaluations. Perhaps he didn't like the direction the team is going in. Perhaps he didn't fit with whoever the OC will be.

Either way, the guy was 70 and falling asleep in the press box last year. I won't lose sleep over trying to get younger and more energetic at that position...

Bill Muir, the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs last season, told the team this morning that he is retiring.

The Chiefs are looking for a new offensive coordinator but had asked Muir to return as their offensive line coach. Muir has served as offensive line coach since joining the Chiefs in 2009.

“I feel badly because they want me to stay,” said Muir, 69. “I’m not leaving because of anything that has gone on or is going on or will go on with the Chiefs. This is a personal decision. It’s very personal. I’ve been denying myself a lot of things over the years but I’m at a point in my life where I want to do some other things.”

Quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn has interviewed for the vacant coordinator’s position. A source outside the Chiefs organization said Zorn is considering resigning if he doesn’t replace Muir as coordinator.
The Chiefs this week announced the hiring of Tom McMahon, formerly of the Rams, as the new special teams coach. They also said three coaches from last year’s staff will not return: Richie Anderson (receivers), Pat Perles (assistant offensive line) and Steve Hoffman (special teams).

That clip of him waddling across the field is priceless...

It literally took him 6 seconds to walk 5 yards. I love how the video starts with him yelling at Richardson.

Why, why in the world would they put that in the video? I blows my mind when they let stuff like that get through. Do they not care about the video or do the people OK'ing it really think that its a legit clip? If they were that strapped for content they should have just filmed him sleeping, or I guess just use the video of him sleeping from the game this year.

If I saw this clip, even if I didn't already have an opinion of Muir, I would say "get that gimp clip out of the damn video." Its like they honestly were trying to mock him. Blows my mind.

You've painted up your lips
And rolled and curled your tinted hair
Ruby are you contemplating
Going out somewhere
The shadow on the wall
Tells me the sun is going down
Oh Ruby
Don't take your love to town

It wasn't me
That started that crazy Asian war
But I was proud to go
And do my patriotic chore
And yes, it's true that
I'm not the man I used to be
Oh, Ruby I still need some company
It's hard to love a man
Whose legs are bent and paralyzed
and I won't serve the needs of a woman of your age
Ruby, I realized
but it won't be long i've heard them say
until i'm not around
Oh Ruby
Don't take your love to town

She's leaving now cause
I just heard the slamming of the door
The way I know I've heard it
Slam one hundred times before
And if I could move I'd get my gun
And put her in the ground
Oh Ruby
Don't take your love to town
Oh Ruby for God's sake turn around

Want to know a surefire way of getting Muir to retire? Have Romeo Cremmel tell him (even if it hasn't happened yet) that Pioli has already found someone to fill the position of OC for next season. Or, he could ask Chiefs fans to send as many letters as possible with the heading "It's time for Muir to go."
