I was a kid. I didn't know any minorities and my first experience with them was negative. I got to know some and adjusted as I matured.

Edit: I actually grew up with a black kid. Only black family in town. So, he was just as figuratively white as anybody else. So it was a real culture shock for me when I got thrown in with a bunch of inner city black kids in the USMC.
