Dang! He was great!

Davy Jones -- lead singer of The Monkees -- has died ... TMZ has learned.

An official from the medical examiner's office for Martin County, Florida confirmed with TMZ they received a call from Martin Memorial Hospital informing them that Jones had passed away.

Jones is survived by his wife Jessica and 4 daughters from previous marriages. He was 66-years-old.

Jones joined The Monkees in 1965 ... along with Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork ... and together they churned out a bunch of hits including, "Daydream Believer, "Last Train to Clarksville" and "I'm a Believer."

The group was initially cast by TV producers who wanted to create a scripted series about an actual rock n' roll band.

One of my favorite Sam Kinison Quotes:

'Charlie, why'd you do it?' 'I heard the album. I heard that goddamn White Album. Why don't we do it in the road? Whadda you think he was sayin', man? No one will be watching us.' And you're sitting there going: IT'S A F---IN' ALBUM! YOU WERE ON ACID, MANSON! IT'S A F---IN' ALBUM! You'd have gotten the same message out of the Monkees, you f---in' d---head."

-Sam Kinison

From what I understand someone else was writing their songs (Neil Diamond?) and doing a very good job of it. Then they decided that they were musicians and needed to do their own stuff, which sucked, so they died out.

Michael Nesmith wrote Different Drum for Linda Ronstadt which was pretty good i thought.

Yeah, after digging around there were a lot of writers contributing to the Monkees, and it looks like the problem for them came as they tried to assume musical control over their band.

Yes, they were put together for TV, similar to "Kenny Rodgers and the first edition." Networks were trying to cash in on the "beetle craze."

Whether they wrote the music or not, they performed it well. They had lots of songs that they liked, including the ones in the opening post, Pleasant Valley Sunday, and a lesser-known one called Shades of Gray that's more of a niche piece. It's a simply written song, but I always really liked it.
