KU, in the Bill Self era, has never had a guard who could absolutely just stroke the basketball.

Exactly my point. Self doesn't really recruit 3 point specialists. Which is not a bad thing. Having that guy this year would have helped tremendously - especially in the tournament.

Keys to next season:

Will the three seniors be able to lead? If they can translate to the freshman the grittiness necessary to play at KU, they will be very successful.

Will the freshman buy in? It helps two of them got acclimated this past year.

Parker, if he commits, makes this a pre season top 5 team.

Next year's team will be better than this year's team assuming Withey stays. His presence alone will ensure an elite defense.

I'm really not sure who can challenge KU next year in the conference. I figured Texas might, but Jcovan made the odd decision to bolt today. Baylor is losing nearly everyone, ISU is losing White and Christopherson, KSU is coached by Weber now....does Huggins have any good recruits coming in? WVU might be #2.

Katz has a preliminary top 25 up for next year. KU about where they should be, IMO. He's still got Baylor as the 2nd best B12 team...I'm not so sure with their 3 major losses.

3. Kansas

The Jayhawks are projected to lose Thomas Robinson, and they will lose Tyshawn Taylor. But have we learned our lesson not to dismiss anything Bill Self does with this program? Kansas might lose Jeff Withey, but don't be surprised if he stays with more touches coming his way. Newcomers Perry Ellis and Ben McLemore will be instant studs. Kansas isn't going anywhere.

Another great season of KU basketball. Manning you will be missed, you made our bigs great. Good luck at Tulsa. Great coaching job by Self this year, confirms what most of us already know: the best coach in the college game coaches at Kansas. Thank you Tyshawn for an amazing senior year, you were the heart and soul of this team. T Rob, I wish you would come back, but the NBA calls...thanks for a great year. Just want to put this out there. KU is due to return the trip to Ohio State next year. I've been saving money to go. If anyone else is going and finds deals on tickets and such let me know and I'll do the same. Not sure how it works as I have never been to a KU away game. Hope Withey really works on his going left/shooting left

right now when goes left it's awkward and still shot with his right hand it exposes the ball too much.

yea, he can shot free throws well enough that he should be able to hit that shot from the top of the key-ish pretty good.

Looks like Norm Roberts will be returning to KU as an assistant coach. He had left KU to become the head coach at St. John's, and has been on the Florida bench of late. His son, Niko, is a walk-on at KU.

Evan Manning, son of Danny Manning, will be a preferred walk-on at Kansas in the fall semester. So, at least there will be one Manning on the bench.

Link (http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2012/apr/08/hidden-highlights-scout-team-duties-dunks-prep-tra/?sports)

From now until they make their much-anticipated debuts in Allen Fieldhouse, the prowess of ineligible Kansas University freshmen basketball players Ben McLemore and Jamari Traylor will remain shrouded in mystery.

McLemore, a 6-foot-5, 185-pound guard from St. Louis, and Traylor, a 6-8, 220-pound forward from Chicago — who practiced second semester but could not play in games in accordance with NCAA eligibility rules — recently were willing to discuss what 16,300 fans can expect at the Oct. 12 Late Night in the Phog.
Of his best buddy McLemore, Traylor said: “The best play Ben had at practice this season was on a fast break. Naadir (Tharpe, frosh guard) had the ball at halfcourt. He threw an alley-oop and Ben jumped the highest I’ve ever seen anybody jump in my life and he dunked it. I think practice ended off that.”

McLemore remembers the Jordanesque-moment well.

“I told Naadir to throw it up. I jumped pretty high to get it with two hands,” McLemore said with a smile. “I’ve got a good vertical and stuff like that.”
His leaping ability was showcased on one other highlight-reel practice play.
“One time I stole the ball from Jeff Withey and had a break by myself in the open court. I jumped pretty high and dunked it,” McLemore said.

He was eager to point out Traylor’s top play on the scout team at practice the past four months.

“Jamari did a double-clutch dunk through the lane through everybody. He double-clutched and dunked over a 7-footer,” McLemore said, ostensibly referring to the team’s only 7-footer, Withey.

Traylor, who worked with and against KU’s big men daily, said his own personal highlight was “probably a defensive play. I probably got a couple blocks in a row, (but) I can’t think of anything off the top of my head now.”

It’s unlikely the consecutive blocks came against 6-10, 237-pound All-American Robinson, who taught Traylor a thing or two this season.

“Thomas didn’t guard me as much as I had to guard him. I made sure I guarded him,” said Traylor, who was determined to learn from the best. “It’s real intense going against him. Sometimes he gets real mad with me. He tries to push me around all the time. I’ve got to show him I’m not a chump, you know?”

McLemore and Traylor made sure to bring their A-games to practice every day.
There was no reason to hold back, considering they wouldn’t be allowed to play in games until preseason 2012-13.

“If there was a time I cried, it was probably the day I found out I was ineligible (in October). Other than that, I don’t think I got that frustrated in practice,” said Traylor, Rivals.com’s No. 141-ranked player in the recruiting Class of 2011. He played his senior year at IMG Academies in Florida. “It’s going to benefit me in the long run because I got a year of practice under my belt. I already know all the plays, and I’ve been practicing against one of the best players in college who is going to be a great NBA player. That practice is going to prepare me for anything next year.”

Noted McLemore, a former Oak Hill Academy/Houston Christian Life Center standout who entered KU as the No. 17-rated player in the country: “When I first got here, I was sluggish and tired trying to guard Tyshawn (Taylor). He’s a fast point guard. I think my defense has picked up. It is getting better.

“I think next year will be a shock, going from not playing at all and coming out and playing a lot of minutes,” McLemore added. “It’s going to be weird because I’m going to be a freshman again playing a lot of minutes. I can’t wait.”
Traylor said a highlight was soaking up information from assistant coach Danny Manning, who is now headed to Tulsa as the Hurricane head coach. Manning worked with KU’s big men.

“I’m not going to forget it. You can’t forget that kind of stuff,” Traylor said of pointers from the 15-year NBA veteran. “I learned so much it will stick with me forever. I learned a lot of the little things as far as footwork, positioning, timing. It’s a lot more complex than I thought it was when you’re just running around in AAU. There’s a lot more thinking involved at this level.”

The two definitely felt part of the team, even though they were not allowed (by the NCAA) to sit on the bench during NCAA Tournament games. Both players sat in seats in the crowd, though close to court level.

“Sometimes guys come out of the huddle and point to me, and I feel I’m part of the team all the time,” Traylor said. “We get acknowledgment from the guys. It’s special to me.”

“It’s a close team,” McLemore noted. “We’re really like brothers.”
McLemore and Traylor, who both had over 3.0 grade point averages first semester and will be ready to go academically next season with four years of eligibility remaining.

Inseparable, they were not roommates.

Traylor rooms with Christian Garrett; McLemore with Niko Roberts.
“If you see me, you are going to see Ben,” Traylor said. “It’s like we are attached at the hip.”

“Niko is my roommate. I’ll stay with him,” McLemore said with a laugh, “but I’m always in Jamari’s room because we’re always together. The team is always together anyway. We’re that close.”

T-Rob, Taylor visit L.A. over weekend: KU senior Tyshawn Taylor and junior Thomas Robinson were spotted sitting behind the Houston Rockets bench Friday during the Rockets’ victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at L.A.’s Staples Center. Former KU teammate Marcus Morris of the Rockets did not play in the game. Morris posted a picture of the three together on Instagram (https://twitter.com/#%21/_tee_y/status/188689034548224000). It’s not known whether Robinson and/or Taylor met with any prospective agents during the trip to L.A., as the Morris twins did during a similar trip last spring. Taylor and Robinson are scheduled to be back for Monday’s basketball banquet (6:30 p.m., Holidome). Robinson, who has yet to officially announce his intentions to enter the NBA Draft, could use the banquet as a forum to announce his plans to turn pro. He’s currently listed as the No. 4 pick overall by draftexpress.com and long been considered a lock to leave KU after three seasons. The first day of the spring National Letter of Intent signing period is April 11 (Wednesday), meaning any non-senior that makes himself eligible for the NBA Draft before then must remove his name by Tuesday night in order to retain collegiate eligibility by the NCAA. In an intriguing spinoff, the NBA does not recognize this new NCAA-mandated college deadline. In the NBA’s eyes, players have until April 29 to enter their names into the draft.

This, that: Future KU player Andrew White, a 6-6, 210-pound senior small forward from Miller School in Chester, Va., scored 14 points off 6-of-13 shooting in the Black Team’s 130-127 loss to the White squad at Friday’s Derby Festival Classic all-star game in Louisville. White had six assists and two steals. North Carolina State signee T.J. Warren, a 6-7 forward, had 27 points and St. John’s signee JaKarr Sampson 18 in the victory. ... William G. Parrott, Jr., a major contributor to KU athletics (Parrott Athletic Center) has died at the age of 79 in Stuart, Fla. Born in Pittsburg, he resided in Stuart since 1977. Parrott lived in Lawrence for a number of years. His obituary can be found here (http://heavencalled.com/notice.php?id=1568) ... KU strength coach Andrea Hudy is featured in the book “Coaching Wisdom: Championship coaches and their Players Share Successful Leadership Principles” by Mike Harrity, associate athletic director at the University of Notre Dame. The J-W’s Tom Keegan recently wrote a profile of Hudy, available here (http://www2.kusports.com/news/2012/apr/01/ku-finds-right-fit-strength-and-conditioning-coach/).

I see this young man as being a cornerstone of next year's team. The added self-discipline he will have developed sitting on the bench for a season can't hurt. Combine his skill set with that of mature freshmen in Perry Ellis & Landen Lucas, a hungry Jabari Traylor and senior leadership with Elijah, Trevor, Jeff, & Kevin... I think we'll make the tourney next year.

Tony Parker to make his decision on Thursday at his high school by picking a hat. We don't usually fair well in these hat ceremonies.

http://www2.kusports.com/news/2012/apr/14/court-classroom-still-home-ex-ku-guard-billy-thoma/

Recruiting: Tony Parker, a 6-9 center from Miller Grove High in Lithonia, Ga., told the Charlotte Observer he will choose a school during a ceremony Thursday at his high school. He has a final list of KU, Duke, Georgia, UCLA, Ohio State, Georgetown and Memphis. He plans on cutting his list to five, then announcing his choice by donning a hat of the winning school.

“Hopefully, I chop (the list) down because I have to pay 30 dollars a hat,” Parker told the paper. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, meanwhile, reports that the country’s No. 27-ranked player is considering making return trips to several of his finalists before rendering his decision.

“I just think he’s trying to get to a clear place in his mind where he wants to go,” Miller Grove coach Sharman White told the Journal-Constitution. “It’s a really tough position to be in, and I don’t envy him one bit. All things considered, he’s handling it very well and trying to figure out what’s best for him.”

Larry Brown to meet with SMU

Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown will interview with SMU on Saturday for the Mustangs' coaching vacancy, a source told ESPN senior writer Andy Katz.

Marquette associate coach Tony Benford will also meet with SMU on Saturday to discuss the opening, the source said.

SMU fired Matt Doherty on March 13 after six seasons.

Brown's last job was as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, which ended in 2010, his seventh NBA job since leaving Kansas after winning the 1988 NCAA championship.

Brown told ESPN.com's Dana O'Neil last month he wanted to return to basketball.

"I'm not going to be politicking for a job right now," the 71-year-old Brown said. "I'd like to get back involved in the game in some capacity. Whether that's as a coach, assistant, running a team or just as a resource, I don't care."

Few days old....duno if a repost, but for those behind such as myself, this was an interesting read.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1141913-tony-parker-kansas-is-the-sleeper-pick-to-steal-high-school-star-from-duke

Tony Parker will probably end up at Duke, UCLA, Georgia or Kansas.

Duke is still the favorite. Georgia is still a dark horse because it's close to home and Parker's high school teammates will be playing alongside him, should he choose to go there.

But it's clear that Parker is perhaps most impressed by Kansas, and given the Jayhawks' run to the NCAA title game, he's probably even more amped on the idea of playing there than he was when he visited in February.

The 6'9" center from Lithonia, Ga. is still uncommitted, and though he is unlikely to sign on Wednesday, he is expected to narrow down his decision from a pool that includes Duke, Georgia, Kansas, UCLA, Ohio State, Georgetown and Memphis.

The Jayhawks are still considered a long shot to land the recruit, but you wouldn't know it by the way Parker talked about the school after he visited. ESPN.com's Jason Jordan wrote a lengthy piece that detailed Parker's selection process and included input from his family members, and Parker seemed enamored with the atmosphere surrounding the Jayhawks' storied basketball program.

Jordan wrote:

It's obvious that Parker is high on the Jayhawks; he's like a kid reeling off his wish list for Christmas. It's almost as if he has rehearsed this spiel on what he likes about them.

He talks about the offensive sets, his love for all things Andrea Hudy, the focus on getting the ball inside and then there are the fans.

"They're insane," Parker said. "Being at the game there was indescribable."

"Atmosphere isn't something that would impress me," Hazel said.

"This isn't an atmosphere," Parker said. "This place is like a cult or a religion."

Some highlights from Tony Parker's career at Miller Grove.
There are some concerns, however, regarding Parker's potential future with the Jayhawks. One is that Bill Self's recruiting class is expected to include three post players, with whom Parker would likely have to compete for a starting job.

Parker insists that won't sway him from choosing Kansas, telling Jordan, "It's not that big a deal to me. But you've got to consider it."

Likely, Parker is also considering the fact that he—and the rest of his recruiting class—could be the missing pieces for a team that made a run to the Final Four in 2012. He saw what Kentucky did with a roster largely made up of inexperienced freshmen. He saw that a young team with unstoppable talent can win a championship.

Judging from the way things went down in this year's postseason, Kansas has the best chance of winning a championship in the short-term of all the schools Parker is considering. Against Kentucky in this year's title game, Kansas was missing players who could stop Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

It is very possible that Parker is one of those missing players. Parker could help Kansas win a championship right away, especially if the rest of the Jayhawks' recruiting class is as strong as the experts are insisting it is.

The history at Duke and UCLA is compelling, and being close to home at Georgia is tempting. But a chance to win a national title trumps all of that, which is why Kansas might have a better chance of landing Parker than anyone believes.

No but you can never have too many skilled big guys. Especially ones on Parkers level. He would likely start at the 4 next year.

Ehhh, Parker is just a big boy. I don't think he's all that skilled. I could be wrong, though.

I don't know how skilled he really is or isn't, because I've only seen a small sample size of his actual play. I watched the McDonalds HS All-American game a couple weeks back and I was rather impressed with and his skill set. Should only get better too. He had the second best game of anyone on the court that night not named Shabazz. Now he only scored 16 pts., but he can block/ alter shots, and rebound as well......and he did that coming off the bench. The one thing during that game that the analysts did kinda knock on him for was his conditioning. Tends to get a bit out of shape sometimes, and perhaps a bit lazy at times too. But if he's motivated and has a fire lit under his ass he could be a beast. Plenty of untapped potential there. I don't think KU really needs him at all, but at the same time, the more talent on the roster the better.

I think before Manning left, it sounded like it was the parents pushing Duke, the AAU coach pushing UCLA, and Parker lobbying for KU. Now Manning is gone and Georgia just hired the AAU coach (so I read). Apparently it was this news that postponed his announcement to next week sometime. I think this all pushes KU down the list enough to say he's not coming here.

We would have been all kinds of talented and deep next year with him, we're still talented and deep without him.

He just came off as cocky and arrogant. Moreso than the others. The stuff Sherron and he were saying to Jay Wright during the 08 tournament, no matter how slighted they felt, was pretty low class if you ask me. Just the impression that I got from those few pages.

Also, after reading Chenowith's section I could see why he was terrible his JR and SR seasons.

Great book so far though.

A few years ago (2008) Microsoft's TechEd conference was in Orlando. Some of my friends knew about a cigar bar they wanted to go to, and I tagged along. We were hanging out on the front patio, and a blue Ferarri pulls up. It's Drew Gooden and his longtime girlfriend, Heidi, who is a Kansas City Chief's cheerleader. I remembered her because she had spent some time playing with my son at a KU football game a couple of years prior.

I was wearing a black KU golf shirt by chance. When Drew got out of the car, I pointed at the logo on my shirt and said "Rock Chalk", and he smiled and said "Go KU". Heidi laughed. Next thing I know we're talking about KU basketball and the National Championship. He was very cool, treated me like I was an old friend.

According to the Dukehoopblog., we're recruiting Przemek Karnow, a 7-footer from Poland.

**UPDATE — Karnowski will visit Marquette after leaving his Gonzaga visit this weekend. He is being heavily recruited by Kansas, as well as a number of PAC-10 schools. Duke just recently made initial contact and will continue to pursue the big man. A quick decision to Gonzaga is rumored, but not true, according to sources.

By Rafal Juc (April 2012). Body/Athleticism: Measuring at 7-0 without shoes Karnowski with average wingspan possesses excellent size to play at center position even on NBA level. Despite lack of impressing athleticism, 19-years old prospect is quite mobile and well-coordinated. At this stage of development, Karnowski has plenty of room to continue to work on his body, which undeniably needs trimming up, what confirms for example 16.3% body fat rate measured last year before Nike Hoop Summit. Worth to admit, that Pole, who is terrific hard-worker lost over season 2011/12 at least 6 kilos on weight.

Young lists KU: James Young, a 6-7, 200-pound senior-to-be from Troy (Mich.) High School, has a top three of Kentucky, KU and Michigan State (in that order), according to Rivals.com. Young averaged 26.8 points and 8.0 rebounds a game in four games at an AAU Tournament last weekend in Minnesota. He plays for The Family out of Detroit. Young, who is ranked No. 9 in the Class of 2013 by Rivals.com, hopes to pick a school this summer.

Twins list KU: The Harrison twins of Texas list KU, Maryland, Kentucky, Baylor, Arizona and Villanova. Andrew Harrison, who is ranked No. 2 in the Class of 2013, and Aaron Harrison, who is ranked No. 5, are 6-foot-5 combo guards out of Travis High School in Fort Bend, Texas.

KU also makes final three for James Young (5 star out of Michigan)

What a time to be a Jayhawk.....

Kentucky bound. No question about it. KU will have Tharpe, Anrio Adams, Mclemore, White, and Frankamp in the back court for '13-14 season. Twins will go where they both get to start from Day 1.

I wouldn't put Maryland out of the picture just yet, but I agree that the chance they end up at KU is small. That isn't always the thing about recruiting, however. Recruits talk, and whether you get a recruit or not, you like the top ones to visit and hopefully say good things to other recruits who may be strongly considering us. Always a positive if you can these type of visits.

Don't know what's happening with Anrio Adams. He hasn't qualified yet, and he's deleted his twitter account. We may have an opening in the backcourt. We don't need any more "non-qualifier" trouble.

Now watch... he'll end up at Kentucky.

If you haven't seen it, there's a documentary on St. Anthony's pursuit of their 23rd state championship on ESPN. "The Street Stops Here" covers Bob Hurley's quest. It's on ESPNCL on 5/20 at 7:15 AM.

KU fans might recognize the point guard. Sorry, no MU or KSU players.

Found it.

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/blog/eye-on-college-basketball/18994926/report-ncaa-inquiring-about-top-ranked-nerlens-noel

The NCAA has begun inquiring about top-ranked recruit Nerlens Noel (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/09/sports/basketball/nerlens-noel-kentucky-recruit-attracts-ncaa-inquiry.html?_r=1&ref=sports), according to a report by Pete Thamel of The New York Times.

Thamel reported on Tuesday that the NCAA sent two assistant directors of enforcement to Everett High School (Mass.), where Noel spent his first two years of high school before transferring to Tilton School (N.H.). Noel committed to Kentucky last month, choosing the Wildcats over Georgetown and Syracuse.

The meeting between Everett school officials and the NCAA lasted more than an hour, but the participants would not reveal specifics.

Sources told Thamel that the NCAA's inquiry centers around Noel's relationship with Chris Driscoll and Errol Randolph. Driscoll is a former Providence assistant coach who is among Noel's advisors, while Randolph is a former substitute teacher at Everett High School.

Thamel did an expose earlier this year on Noel, which included a look into his relationships with the people in his inner circle (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/11/sports/ncaabasketball/everybody-wants-a-piece-of-nerlens-noel.html?pagewanted=all) – including Driscoll, Randolph and others. Driscoll had been banned from Tilton's campus and had a falling-out with BABC, Noel's former AAU program. As for Randolph, Tuesday's report references a link on a social networking page between Randolph and Andy Miller, a basketball agent with ASM Sports.

The report also states that the NCAA is looking into Noel's finances, including how Noel was able to fly to Kentucky and Louisville on unofficial visits. Unofficial visits cannot be paid for by the university; earlier this year, Noel's advisors said that Noel's father paid for the visits.

Academics are another issue with Noel, and Tilton's headmaster Jim Clements told Thamel he wouldn't be surprised if the NCAA reached out. According to Clements, Noel is on track to graduate – but still has work to do.

Swypt from Phog.Net

This could be interesting.

Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby is apparently diving right into the deep end of the conference expansion pool. I was told that “back channel” contact is currently taking place with five high major schools, with regards to joining the Big 12 conference. These lines of communication have been opened with Clemson, Maryland, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Notre Dame.

It is anticipated that two of those five will join before summer’s end, two of those five will be invited to join the Big 12. (There is also an outside chance that a combination of Brigham Young for football, with Notre Dame in all other sports could be combined with one of the other four schools. But it’s definitely an outside chance.) Initial contact has been made with all of the schools, and none of the five have closed the door on the possibility. Georgia Tech is a bit lukewarm, based upon the relative academic reputations of the ACC and the Big 12.

Notre Dame is reportedly talking to the ACC as well, but has qualms about going that route, given the revenue disparity between the ACC’s new ESPN deal and the one the Big 12 agreed to with ESPN/Fox. The Big 12′s deal offers $20 million annually per team, with escalators that could raise that figure to as much as $23-25 million, should the Big 12 find attractive expansion candidates. Meanwhile, the ACC’s deal is not only for less annual money, at “only” $17 million per team, but includes all three tiers of television rights, meaning that a school like Notre Dame would be deprived of a potentially lucrative revenue stream that their third-tier rights would provide.

The other schools?Atlantic Coast Conference members all?have expressed unqualified interest in continuing the discussion of switching conferences. Asked to rank the expansion candidates, the person I talked to placed them in the following order, based on a combination of the school’s interest in joining the conference, and the conference’s interest in having them:

1) Clemson
2) Florida State
3) Maryland
4) Notre Dame*
5) Georgia Tech

Am I the only one who could give two shits about all of these conferences, teams switching, etc?!

Regardless of where KU ends up, or who joins the B12, I'll always follow the team.

It's all speculation at this point, but if there are good schools in play, I think the Big 12 should be in the center of it.
