SALEM, CT (WFSB) -

A 6-year-old child in Salem was killed Tuesday morning after being pulled into a wood chipper, officials said.

Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance said the boy was outside with his siblings helping his father clear brush and grind trees from a neighbor's yard at the time of the incident.

The boy has been identified as Jeffrey Bourgeois, a first-grader at Salem School

"The young child attempted to assist his father. When the father's back was turned, he picked a branch trying to feed it into the chipper when in fact he was pulled into the chipper," Vance said.

The boy's father owns C&S Tree Service and was on a job on Brookside Drive when the accident occurred.

Brookside Drive has been closed so emergency officials could investigate what happened.

Investigators said the boy's father and mother, Scott and Coreen Bourgeois, and their two other children are well known in the tight-knit community.

The first person to come to the family's aid was Salem Fire Chief Gene Mairorano, who is a neighbor.

"Basically we're getting counseling for the family. I was first on the scene and kept everyone away," he said.

Police said their investigation into the accident is not criminal, but state police want to make sure every aspect of the accident is investigated properly. The wood chipper was hauled away from the accident scene to be examined.

Salem School Superintendent H. Kaye Griffin said the district is in "emergency crisis intervention mode" and counseling is available to students as well as faculty.

And if none of you have ever been around a wood chipper than you have no fucking idea how dangerous they are! So stfu!

Kids are around dangerous equipment all the time. The key is to make sure they respect the tools and know how to be safe. Obviously, the kids clothing got caught up in the tree branch. That's really the first rule of wood chipping; don't wear loose-fitting clothes.

2nd rule don't let a god damned kindergartener near a machine that can eat you!

He was six years old.

I don't know the circumstances. If the dad was allowing him to help, the dad was being totally irresponsible.

You don't ask a 6 year old to drive a car, you don't ask a 6 year old to run a wood splitter, and you don't ask him to run a wood chipper. A 6 year old doesn't have the awareness to actually understand HOW dangerous those things are.

There's a good chance (kids being kids) that he was explicitly told to stay away from the chipper and he did it anyway 'trying to help'. That's how kids are.

It's sad. One of those things that anyone from outside can say 'should have never happened' but shit happens. Tragic horrible shit.

I choose to think of it as using annoyingly bad puns as some kind of cutting tool that prunes away the hurtful emotionally traumatic dead branches of the tree of life. It's better for all involved, especially the tree of life which can now continue growing and living healthily for several more decades.
