A life-threatening, large outbreak of tornadoes is forecast to unfold across the central and southern Plains this weekend.

According to AccuWeather.com Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams, "The risk is about as high as it gets."

Oklahoma City and Wichita lie in the heart of the tornado threat area that extends from near Wichita Falls, Texas, to near Omaha, Neb., late Saturday afternoon through Saturday night

If you have enough tornadoes, I wonder if you could get enough rotational energy to throw Earth out of orbit. And depending on whether the tornadoes are in the northern or southern hemisphere, it would either throw us into the sun or out into deep space.

I would think that the law of conservation of mass-energy would not allow it, unless we could rig a bunch of nuclear detonations at the same time. And I think it would be more the detonations that would cause it.

Two areas listed as "high risk" areas tomorrow. Once is in central Kansas and stretching down into Oklahoma. The other sits near Omaha Nebraska and reaches into Iowa. St. Joseph (where I live) Is listed in the "moderate risk" area, and KC is right on the edge of the moderate risk and more so in the slight risk area.

Keep in mind that high/moderate/low are not by any means 100% accurate. Those zones are listed to show just how probable severe storms are in an area. Remember Joplin last year? That was a "slight risk" day. High Risk days don't come around very often, maybe 5-10 times in a year.

Tomorrow if you live around the KC area I would watch out as large hail will probably be the primary threat. This is a scary setup- And though I like storms, and find them fascinating, I wouldn't mind one bit if this forecast busts and all we get is rain.

"Life Threatening?" Probably not the case around here- all the same, weather changes in an instant so keep yourself informed tomorrow.

One of my friends, who I've known my whole life, was in the basement with his dad just east of the hospital. Took his house away and threw a car into the basement. Had they not been kneeling by the washer and dryer (which the car landed on) they'd have been dead. To make it worse, they had to climb out of the basement through the car. In the car was a man who was impaled by a 2x4.

The irony is that I remember growing up in Joplin and I don't remember a lot of activity involving tornadoes. I remember maybe once in school having a tornado drill, an outbreak on Easter when I was under 10, one hitting Webb City when I was 18, one that hit riverton then later Carl Junction and eventually wiping Franklin off the map, I guess one hit Joplin back in 2000 and then last year.

The comforting part is that is only a handful in about 40 years. The troubling part is the majority came within the last 10-15 years.

TWC just said that Wichita has a 90% chance of getting hit by a tornado today.

That's not exactly what they mean by that metric. They're referring to the Weather Channel's "TOR:CON" index, which gives the probability of a tornado touching down within 50 miles of a location. So basically, there's probably going to be a tornado somewhere tonight, but it could touch down in the middle of the field for 10 seconds and still satisfy the criteria.

So basically, there's gonna be a lot of activity tonight most likely, but saying there's a 90 percent chance that Wichita will be "hit" is inaccurate.

Im in the newton/wichititty area, it's been very cloudy and windy all day. Based on the models the guy on the news was talking about last night, that's a good thing. The fear was the dry line (the line demarcating very dry and very moist air) would move back to the west, and then when the cold front moved through, unleash hot fury. It looks like though, since its been cloudy a little cooler and windy, that there might not be enough energy to produce a huge outbreak of tornadoes (or ternaders as they're sometimes called out here). That's what I'm hoping for anyway. Cus yeah. Not looking forward to my house pulling a train on a bunch of ternaders tonight.

Salina, KS may be in the direct path of a very large tornado. Warn your friends/family if they live there.

We dodged a bullet here in Salina tonight. Wedge tornado lifted just southwest of town and came back down about 10 miles to the east of us.Some heavy rain and quarter size hail but that's all. Looks like south central Kansas and northeast Kansas will be in for a rough night.

Des Moines got a little interesting tonight. About 1 or 2 hours ago we had a decent amount of hail for 7 minutes or so, not sure if it was large enough or lasted long enough to damage the roof, I'll see tomorrow. Then about 20 or 25 minutes ago DSM got hit with a crazy wind gust that maxed out at 67 mph.

Seems pretty damn accurate to me.

Tornadoes damage Boeing plant in Wichita
Posted by rgrunbaum on April 14, 2012 at 11:10 PM
The Wichita Eagle reported on its website Saturday evening that the storms caused heavy damage at Spirit AeroSystems, Boeing and McConnell Air Force Base.

Boeing spokesman Forrest Gossett told the Eagle that the plant “took a direct hit.” A skeleton crew was on duty, he said, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. The company won’t be able to assess the damage until morning, he said, but it was extensive.

At Spirit AeroSystems, the paper reported, part of the side of the manufacturing process facility was also gone once the storm passed. Officials there also were working late Saturday night to assess damage, and the plant was without power. There were no immediate reports of injuries. Debris was along MacArthur Road along the plant.

KAKE TV reported extensive damage at Spirit Aerosystems buildings IPB3 and IPB 4 in South Wichita. Spirit Aerosystems is Wichita’s largest employer and a key Boeing supplier.

Spirit spokesperson Jarrod Bartlett said, “We are suspending operations tonight; employees who were scheduled to report to work tonight or tomorrow should not report unless contacted directly. We will not be able to fully assess the damage until daylight.”http://today.seattletimes.com

Preliminary estimation of 283 million dollars damage

A tornado swept through south Wichita on Saturday, causing significant damage but apparently only minor injuries.

Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems took a direct hit, officials said, as did the Oaklawn neighborhood and a mobile home park.

Preliminary reports said 100 trailers in the mobile home park were damaged. In the Oaklawn area, two homes were destroyed and several others were damaged. Two residents were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, while many others were injured but did not go to the hospital.

At nearby Spirit AeroSystems, six buildings were significantly damaged and four others had major damage.

A preliminary assessment by city and county officials estimated the damage to be as much as $283 million.

At 12:25 a.m., Sedgwick County Commission Chairman Tim Norton declared a state of disaster, which will initiate an emergency plan and notify state officials that additional support and assistance may be needed

Pinaire Mobile Home Park near 52nd Street South and Clifton was heavily damaged, and in the middle of the complex a fire that was apparently caused by a ruptured gas line was burning.

Kristin Dean, who lives in the park, said she was one of 75 to 100 people who took refuge in the park’s shelter.

“Things were flying and everyone screamed,” she said. “We all kind of huddled together.”

She said the noise from the storm lasted 15 to 20 seconds. When it was over, she said, some trailers were on fire and others were missing.

Power lines were down, she said, and car windows were broken. The smell of natural gas filled the air.

She said the park was “pretty much gone. It’s devastating, but you know, we’re alive.”

Emergency vehicles were having trouble getting to the park because of extensive damage to trees and power lines in the area. Many emergency responders arrived on foot.

Sedgwick County spokeswoman Kristi Zuchovich said officials were still trying to assess the damage at midnight. She said officials were asking people to stay out of an area bounded by 39th and 63rd streets south, and Hydraulic and K-15, so emergency workers can get in.

Shortly after the storm – which swept up from Oklahoma and through Sumner County and south Wichita – residents of the park were shouting the names of family members who were missing. Other residents were asking people to be quiet so they could hear the voices of people who might be trapped in the debris.

Many residents were gathering at the entrance to the park.

Christine Moyer, who lives in the park, said she took cover in the park’s shelter just was what she described as a “skinny tornado” hit.

Among those gathered at 47th and Clifton after the storm was Pam Thurman of Belle Plaine. She and a fellow nurse, Toni Bowman of Wellington, drove to the area after hearing about the damage.

“We’re nurses,” Thurman said. “It’s what you’re supposed to do.”

Maria Silvers, who lives in Oaklawn, said she rode out the storm at a fire station in Derby along with 150 other people and a lot of pets.

At Boeing, spokesman Forrest Gossett said the plant “took a direct hit.” A skeleton crew was on duty, he said, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. The company won’t be able to assess the damage until morning, he said, but it was extensive.

At Spirit AeroSystems, part of the side of the manufacturing process facility was also gone. Officials there also were working late Saturday night to assess damage, and the plant was without power. There were no immediate reports of injuries. Debris lined MacArthur Road along the plant.

Spirit AeroSystems personnel were trying to assess the damage to the plant. The facility was without power and in the dark, it was difficult to assess the extent of the damage, said Spirit AeroSystems spokeswoman Debbie Gann. “It’s substantial,” Gann said.

Spirit spokesman Jarrod Bartlett later said that the plant is suspending operations because of the damage. Spirit Employees scheduled to work Sunday should not report to work unless they are directly contacted, he said.

“Our first priority is the safety and well-being of our employees,” Bartlett said. “We will not be able to fully assess the damage tonight.”

The storm that hit the mobile home park was part of a strong system that moved across Kansas, churning up more than a dozen tornados but causing no deaths or major damage across the state by late evening.

The system spawned at least six tornadoes in rural western Kansas Saturday afternoon, including one north of Dodge City that was on the ground for about half an hour.

As the storms swept across the state, a large tornado skirted the city limits of Salina on Saturday evening as another tornado 90 miles away threatened the Reno County city of Pretty Prairie.

In Butler County, emergency officials felt like they dodged a major disaster.

El Dorado residents told Butler County emergency management officials that several large trees, some as much as a yard in diameter, had fallen south and west of the county courthouse.

The storms did little damage to downtown Wichita, but caused major street flooding.

Patrons of Heroes Sports Bar didn’t evacuate when tornado sirens sounded, although a plan was in place had more severe weather come their way. Early warnings kept most people away from downtown on Saturday, with sparse crowds populating the area after a Miranda Lambert concert and the storms.

"We have a basement that we could’ve put people in if things would have got worse," Heroes manager Eric Davisson said. "The most we saw was the flooding, and when the rain stopped we checked for damage around the back and front and there was nothing."

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management activated its emergency operations center in Topeka to monitor the storms and prepare to provide assistance needed. But as dusk settled over the state, it appeared that little help was needed.

Emergency management officials said initial reports indicated that structural damage was limited to outbuildings and one home in Rush County.

Minor wind damage was reported in Russell County, where K-18 was closed near Luray and Lucas due to power lines on the road. Minor flooding was reported in low-lying areas around the state.

Concerns about the storm outbreak prompted McConnell Air Force Base to relocate 16 aerial refueling tankers to Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota, said base spokeswoman Lt. Jessica Brown.

It was just the second time that the Storm Prediction Center issued a high-risk warning more than 24 hours in advance. The first was in April 2006, when nearly 100 tornadoes tore across the southeastern U.S., killing a dozen people and damaging more than 1,000 homes in Tennessee.

Saturday’s storm system was spread widely across the Midwest, but it failed to produce that kind of damage. Baseball-size hail was reported in parts of northeast Nebraska, and there were predawn tornado warnings in Oklahoma City, where at three possible tornadoes were reported west and north of the city.

The threat of severe weather was expected to move out south-central Kansas by Sunday. Forecasters predict that it will remain windy with a high near 70.

It's always a good day when it's not as bad as it could have been. If not for the early storms in NE creating a lot of cloud cover, etc. It likely would have been worse, especially further north.

There were at least 4 long track storms that put down tornadoes. (see: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/120414_rpts.html)

Here's a couple of pics I took, from near Salina and Abilene, KS:

My niece, her husband and baby girl got down into the basement in Creston, Ia as they heard glass breaking. 70-100' oak tree in their front yard is laying across the roof of their house with limbs sticking in the living room and they've got the chain saws running as we speak. Same tornado messed up the hospital in Creston and they've been evacuating patients most of the night. Nobody sereiously hurt at this point though.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/04/15/us/midwest-storms/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Three states face the most danger of possible tornadoes Sunday, as parts of the Midwest assess the damage from storms that left at least five people dead in Oklahoma. The National Weather Service received 121 reports of possible tornado touchdowns Saturday and early Sunday in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback told CNN Sunday that "97 tornadoes touched down" in his state; the National Weather Service has not confirmed the exact number of twisters.

Who could have guessed it was overblown. ;)

:hmmm: I doubt thats the general consensus.

Lots of damage in town. My parents' old house took a ton of damage from the storm as well, fortunately they moved to Omaha.

Well that sucked. Woke up at around 6 am to see the line of storm move through Tulsa, only for a little thunder and rain for about 15 minutes. I don't want a storm to destroy anyone's home, but I like it when it gets so bad that it ALMOST does. It's fun.
