Ranking AFC West backup QBs
May, 2, 2012, 8:00 AM ET
By Bill Williamson | ESPN.com

Now that Matt Leinart has signed with the Oakland Raiders, each teams in the AFC West has a new backup quarterback.

After looking at the list, here is my advice to the starters in the division: stay healthy.

The AFC West’s group of backups is not very strong. I ranked the group and asked Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. for his opinion of my list. Williamson agreed with my rankings and that this is a weak class. He said the separation between all four quarterbacks is not big.

Let’s look at our rankings:

1. Brady Quinn, Kansas City Chiefs: Quinn is probably the best equipped of this group to help his team win on a short-term basis.

2. Matt Leinart, Oakland: Leinart is a good fit in Oakland because of familiarity with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and starter Carson Palmer. But he has shown he can’t be trusted as a starter.

3. Caleb Hanie, Denver Broncos: The Broncos like the fit though he is warming the backup chair for second-round pick Brock Osweiler.

4. Charlie Whitehurst, San Diego Chargers: The Chargers like their former No. 3 quarterback, but I think they would have been better off keeping Billy Volek as Philip Rivers' backup. Volek, in my mind, would have been the best backup in this division.

He doesn't mention Stanzi because Ricky is gonna be the starter, I suppose. Good catch, Mr. Williamson.

Prediction: Brady Quinn is our Day 1 starter for the 2013 NFL season.

Am I the only one that would find it funny if all 4 starters went down and each team played the better part of the season with those back ups? Mediocre division would take on a new meaning.

I can't believe Matt Cassel is backing up Matt Cassel.

LOL you would think the Broncos would want a better backup then Caleb Hanie. If Pay-Me-A-Ton goes down they are screwed.

Guess the Broncos are taking a page out of the Colts playbook by not having shit at QB if manning goes down.

What's that? Hope the defense breaks the other starting QBs?

Hanie may just be an upgrade over Spicoli Jr.

Carson Palmer and Peyton Manning are old, and frail!

Philip Rivers is overdue for an injury!

Can't say I blame the Broncos for what they did....If Peyton is healthy enough to compete this season and possibly next, great they got a great QB for a couple of years. If Peyton goes down, or is not healthy enough to compete at all, well they should have close to if not the 1st pick in next years draft which from what people here say will have some good QB's. If they still had Tebow they would probably get stuck in the middle of the draft again.

Fuck all these stiffs.

The real question: Do the Chiefs (Ricky Stanzi), Raiders (Terrelle Pryor) or Broncos (Brock Osweiler) have a hidden gem at No. 3?

You if think about the backup QB position it might be the hardest position to figure out what to do with.

A - If you have a playoff caliber team you certainly want a backup who can fill in for 2-4 weeks and hopefully keep you at .500 or better during that span. But, if your starter does down for the season at any point what it purpose of having a quality backup. He almost certainly would never take you to the Superbowl, but would likely keep you in the bottom of the 1/3 or 1/2 of the draft.

B - If you are a bottom feeder trying to rebuild for the future and your franchise QB goes down, why would you want a quality backup to come and win 5, 6, or 7 games. Or if it is late in the year, you know he is going to play his butt off trying to make an opportunity with another team the following year and again maybe wins 3 or 4 in December and again knocking you down the draft board.

NFL history has very few example of backup QBs going from rags to riches ala Curt Warner or even a backup QB playing deep into the playoffs and winning a Superbowl. So, what is the point of have a good backup?

Didn't Whitehurst get traded to Seattle last year for like a 2nd?

The trade was two years ago. They swapped second round picks (San Diego picked 20 spots higher) and they gave up a 2nd or 3rd last year. Whitehurst didn't work out in Seattle, he is now back in San Diego.
