View Full Version : Chiefs Greatest CP Folk Heroes
Thig Lyfe

Something I love about this place is the way we build up certain players to the point where they become mythological figures. And I don't mean true on-the-field heroes like Derrick Thomas, Tony Gonzalez, or Tyler Thigpen. I mean the guys who only achieved greatness in our collective imagination. The guys who became legends without actually doing anything legendary. The guys whose names live on in our hearts and our hearts alone.
They are the folk heroes of ChiefsPlanet.
Who, in your opinion, is the greatest of them all?
Some candidates:
Rich Scanlon: Emerging from the shadowy, mysterious region known as Europe, he tantalized us (well, mostly the Roys) with the promise of salvation, everlasting joy, and decent linebacker play. He ended up providing us with none of those things, though he did get a few special teams tackles, I think.
Bobby Sippio: A man of humble indoor beginnings, Robert "Bobby" Sippio took River Falls by storm with his unique blend of middling talent and decent size. Though he was often confused by the tremendous length of the field, he offered a glimmer of hope to fans who had an eye for talent and/or an HBO subscription. He even made the 53 man roster, but was cut in favor of Tyler Thigpen, who as we all know went on to accomplish great things.
Ricky Stanzi: There is still some hope that noted jingoist Ricky Stanzi will actually get a chance to lead our Chiefs to the promised land. But until he actually manages to get on the field, his imaginary legend will continue to grow. Will he, like Robin Hood, steal from the rich (Matt Cassel, by killing him) to give to the poor (the Chiefs fanbase, by winning a fucking playoff game)? Or will he merely linger on the bench as a fading beacon of hope, a whispered promise of what could have been? Only time will tell.

These are all merely busts. A bust has high expectations, justified by a successful college career and a high draft slot. A folk hero has no such pedigree, and his expectations come not from hype but from wishful thinking.

Some of you guys don't understand the point of this assignment.
The goal isn't to just name the shittiest Chiefs player you can think of. The goal is to name a random Chiefs player who garnered a huge following on Chiefs Planet for not doing much.
Nate Hobgood-Chittick and other abortions from those Vermeil defenses are not valid submissions unless people genuinely liked them and thought they were good players.

I bet R-Kal Truluck had a following. He did indeed. He put up some ridiculous stat in a preseason game like 3 or 4 sacks and demonstrated the quickest first step off the snap that Chiefs fans had seen since Derrick Thomas. That made him an instant fan favorite.
Hell, Vermeil surprised people and actually kept him around for a couple seasons. Even then, people were pissed that Truluck was only in a backup role with the team. The guy was going to be the missing piece on the Chiefs defense, propelling us to a Super Bowl after we lost to the Colts in 2003.
Then we traded his ass to the Packers. Heh.
Ugh. Rough times. That was around the same period as Rich Scanlon too, I think.

Looks like Steve Maneri is climbing the list, based on the Dallas Clark thread.

Will he, like Robin Hood, steal from the rich (Matt Cassel, by killing him) to give to the poor (the Chiefs fanbase, by winning a ****ing playoff game)? Or will he merely linger on the bench as a fading beacon of hope, a whispered promise of what could have been? Only time will tell.
Contribute your nominations below.
Boomer Grigsby for sure!

I heard he was shipped off because he's as dumb as a bag of rocks and he has weepy vagina issues. I don't know though. The guy that did it is a real dumbass himself.

So what does it do to Bobby Sippios status, being an attempted murderer and all?

Hugh Douglas. He was going to solve all the problems of the Vermeil D, if only we could sign him as a FA.

I don't think we had any folk hero types this year, did we? That's how bad this season has been: we weren't even able to invent something to be hopeful about.
