View Full Version : Life Most expensive commercial airfare?

Jump on orbitz or expedia or something, and find the highest priced flight you can.

The rules:

It must be on a major world carrier or national carrier. No private jets or charters, but if it's a small national airline like Air Mauritius or Air Namibia, that's fine.

It must be a flight that you can look up on one of the travel sites or an airline site. No custom jobs.

You can pick any travel dates and any class of seat.

Travel must be from one city to another and back, round trip. No multi-city trips.

I'll start, and see if you can beat me.

Orbitz says I can fly first class from Denver to Kabul, Afghanistan on July 1st, and return on July 5th, for a cost of only $24,426.

Can you beat it?

I was thinking along those lines... tried Perth to Reykjavik, Iceland, but it's "only" $26,100.

And apparently there aren't any flights from the Falkland Islands to northern Russia this time of year...

I actually ran into a woman in the Zurich airport the other day that was doing the South Africa to Alaska thing. She said she had been nanny-ing in South Africa. I'm sure she didn't pay thaaat much for a ticket, but thats a hulluva long ways. There's really just no easy way to get to Alaska.

You'd have to really be wanting to go to San Carlos De Bariloche for that kind of scratch.

I looked and looked for a civilian flight to the moon, but couldn't find anything available this year. I guess for roughtly $250K, it can be done.

I can't hit $40k yet, but here's a pretty good second: Launceston, Tasmania, to Reykjavik at $36,292.

It may be the longest one so far, too, with a 48 hr, 55 minute span on the way out. That's harsh.

Heh, that's pretty cool. So, she lives in Alaska and.... has family in South Africa? Happened to be looking for nanny positions and stumbled on one in South Africa? If guess if you have the time, it's a good way to see the world... I'd make that kind of trip over a couple of weeks, visiting a handful of cities along the way.

How fascinating. I never knew that such tickets were sold. It seems like any rich person would buy one as long as you thought the company was going to be around. Heck, I'd sure buy one if I had the money, just for retirement fun.

Definitely. Even in 2012 dollars, the original cost of the pass + companion pass is around $1,012,000.

You certainly couldn't buy a very nice jet for that kind of money. Assuming $20k for a charter flight, your break-even point is 50 trips.

Seems like it should have been a no-brainer back then*

*For anyone who had $400k laying around

I've heard that if you don't fly first class you have to do stuff like wash out your own champagne glass. I couldn't handle that.

You realize that you're not on the plane the whole time, right? You actually get off the plane and walk around at your destination before you come home.

While I applaud the attempt, the price to beat is now over $47,000. Step back up to the plate and take another swing.
