View Full Version : Science So lets say we discover aliens....

...then what?

How much would it change life today? Would all hell break loose? How would people handle a discovery of that magnitude? We are assuming that the aliens are intelligent and not just micro organisms.

I enjoyed reading this.

Reading it now. I laughed at On an individual level they may not be interested in killing us, but may be interested
in incorporating us into their civilization so they can sell us their products, keep us as pets, or
have us mine raw materials for them.

Never thought of that possibility before.

Advanced ETI within 100 light years could receive our earliest radio transmissions;
those less than 50 light years away could watch our television shows; and those less than 10
light years away could receive our earliest intentional METI attempts....

Perhaps ETI actually do inhabit nearby star systems and detect
our radio leakage but have no plans to send a response until we send them a more intentional
message. They may be unimpressed with the quality of our broadcastsI always hated McHale's Navy, too.

The better question would be "What would they do with us?"

Because if they're traveling the galaxy, their technology is exponentially ahead of ours, and there would be very little we could do. Even uploading a computer virus to their mothership via Will Smith probably wouldn't work... They'd look at our nuclear arsenal and say "Ahh that's cute."

Imagine if we finally made a manned trip to Mars, and happened upon a primitive life form there. Do you think we'd be all Mother Hen, and teach them some technology, and maybe build some large stone structures for them? Or would we see them as completely inferior beings and put them in a cage to probe and dissect later and show the fellas back home?

Look at how we view other primates on our own planet. We share 99% of our DNA with other primates. And in the grand evolutionary timeline, we're just very slightly ahead of those other primates in development. Though other primates haven't developed speech, their mental capacity is much higher than we give them credit for, and they're capable of quite a bit of the intelligence and emotion that we're capable of. The gap between us and other primates is smaller than the gap would be between us and space fairing alien civilizations. Let's hope they'd treat us a bit better than we treat the next smartest creatures on our own little planet....

Really, we're a pretty shitty species. Greedy, selfish, arrogant, and very destructive. Aliens would likely view us as such.

My estimation is that about 10% of the human race is prepared for such an event. The other 90% would freak the **** out. I think it would devastate everything. Religion, philosophy, economy, all down the shitter. The end of life as we know it. And even those of us who think we're ready (I could myself in that group) probably aren't. We are so arrogant and earth-centric in our belief structures as a species, the way we think we know so much about science and the universe (like saying space travel to here is impossible because we don't know how to do it). Finding out just how primitive and...not special we are, for lack of a better word, would be rough.

We'd probably give them blankets laced with Smallpox.

I think this is the prevailing idea. Why should we assume a small group of aliens on a "discovery" mission would treat the natives any better than the Europeans did?

I mean, it's our fault for not being as technologically advanced, right? I can picture the moral argument, if morality exists for them, going something like:

"Sweet planet. Report back to our overlord that we have discovered a perfect vessel for him."
"Uh...what about all these natives?"
"Fuck these people! They're basically animals! Look at all the natural resources they have."
"Yeah, but they were here first."
"So what? Look at all this water they have, and they can't even divide time? They still have to communicate through sight and sound? For god's sake, they only live 80 years! They aren't even worth mentioning."
"yeah...I guess..."
"Come on, man, I'm hungry. Just vaporize them and let's go get some lunch."
"Eh, fuck it. Okay."

Pretty much this. Humans are a disgusting species. No doubt our governments would treat them as hostiles, even if they came respectfully. We'd no doubt try to get a hold of their technology for weapons production and space travel before delving into medical and power issues.

I'd like it to happen just to see what would go down. Could be interesting.

I think it might be fun to see if they would let me visit and take a ride on the UFO. That is if I could communicate. But it might be good to let someone else do it first to see what kind of side effects it may have. If all goes well with the first folks Im all in!
