View Full Version : Chiefs In your lifetime, would you rather see....

A Chiefs superbowl win, or man landing on another planet?

Which is more important to you?

I had a conversation about this today and, honestly, I have to pick a Chiefs win. Even though man landing on another planet would be an achievement for all humanity and would likely be the greatest day ever for humanity, I have to be selfish. A Chiefs win would mean much more to me.

A Chiefs SB win would mean more personally. Although it would be incredible to see someone land on another planet.

I'm not really holding my breath for either to happen in my lifetime. But I think its more likely that mankind will set foot on another planet before the Chiefs win a SB.:banghead:

When I die, I can rest at peace knowing that eventually, we will visit another planet. I feel like the progression of science is strong enough it will happen, barring any kind of apocalypse before we are able to reach into space.

If we went to another planet I don't think I would be out in the street yelling and screaming and waving a flag. Let alone if it were Russia who lands on Mars before the US.

No, seeing the Chiefs win one would be much more satisfactory.

That SB would carry with me for the rest of my life. It's kind of sad that that's the world we live in. The sense of adventure, of pushing the frontiers, testing science, technology and humans to their limits, to simply discover what's out there as we make our way to the stars that I remember so well, even from my childhood in the 70s and 80s (although it was already dying even back then...), is so completely dead.

I mean, seriously, you want to know why someone would vote for landing on another planet? Because, to me, as much as I love football, and as much of a thrill it would be to vicariously win something for once, what's the fucking superbowl when you balance it against the advancement of mankind.

I think that we spend far too much time in space to say, "fuck it, let's not worry about Mars"

But that's not the case. Humans are very very interested in Mars. And we could have been there already if 97% of the population didn't selfishly think "What good would that do for me?" like we've seen in this thread. Never at any point in the space exploration field has anyone said "Fuck it, let's not worry about Mars." That's just absurd.

This is the reason we haven't been to Mars yet:

I did a project in college on terraforming. Its theoretically possible to accumulate enough greenhouse gases within about 80 years of starting the process. But that doesn't include developing the technology to actually land on the planets, or steering asteroids towards frozen gas deposits on Mars that would release the gas into the atmosphere. After that, the atmosphere would be stable enough to start planting plants that would convert the CO2-heavy atmosphere to an atmosphere that has enough O2 to support humans.

And thats only assuming we choose to go the asteroid route, which seems like the quickest, but also the most cowboyish of the proposed approaches.

What if it's Matt Cassel landing on another planet?

I know one way we might get both. We send Cassel to Mars

How about we have both and launch Cassel to another planet and keep him there?

In a perfect world we could all drop funding for security and save a gazillion (what comes after a trillion?) dollars.

We have yet to put a single person on another planet. How long until we can start terraforming? That's a long ****ing way away, unless some super genius dude comes along..

Or unless space travel is privatized..oh wait.

Heh. Dragon is about to dock with the ISS right now. Although there's a big difference between LEO and escape velocity.

Yeah but we'd be barbarians with a SB. :thumb:

For me it's very selfish & personal. I have no problem admitted that. A man visiting another planet wouldn't change my life at all. I'm more interested in creating moments that to me personally would last a lifetime.

I respect that opinion, and obviously I'm the minority. A Super Bowl win would be great, no doubt about it, and I would glow for an entire offseason before demanding a repeat. It would give me months of pleasure.

But seeing a human walking on another planet is profound. It'd be like watching the first time a caveman lit a fire, or being with Edison as the first phonograph plays. It's monumental history, and it would likely provide information and technology that will affect our lives dramatically.

If you had a time machine, would you go back to the day of the moon landing or the day of the chiefs Superbowl 4 win?

Better yet, drop me off on July 15 1969 so I can catch the moon landing and just leave me there for 6 months so I can watch the SB win too.

The 2 most significant events for Chiefs Planet happened within 6 months of each other.

That is really a scary thought. I think most of us go around assuming as Americans that space exploration is our god-given right, and that its ours for the taking. But if the technological advances of China and others are any indicator, they'll beat us to Mars, and handily.

Maybe being provoked in such a clear-cut and visible way as a modern space race will spark our nation's scientific development. Unfortunately, this time around we don't have the luxury of an influx of German scientists immigrating to our country to provide the mental muscle we need to accomplish such a feat. If it weren't for the von Braun group, our space program would have, literally, never got off the ground. Americans go around toting the space program as a symbol of our nation's ingenuity, when in reality, we're just good at acquiring free agents.

Hate to say it, but I just don't know if the US has enough/the quality of innovative minds going into the industry that could help us beat China or others in a modern space race.

One of, if not the biggest mind fuck of all, for me, is that any steps we take towards deep outer space navigation, in my lifetime, will be so minute in the whole grand scheme of things, but that they are the necessary steps towards deep space travel and they must be done.

I thought about it as Chargers vs. Man landing on another planet, and I chose landing on another planet.

The nice thing about American society is that we remain an attraction. I wonder what would happen if we just offered citizenship to the Chinese rocket scientists.

For that matter, I wonder if we've offered asylum to the Iranian nuclear scientists. The challenge in their case is that the nutcases in control might kill their families, but it seems like a cheap way to cripple their program if some of them do accept. And I'm not talking about a secret offer. I'm talking about broadcasting it out on Voice of America and putting google ads on all of the Iranian soap opera sites and stuff. List the names of all the people we want to recruit, and just say, "Get over the border into Iraq or Afghanistan or Pakistan and give us a call. We'll pick you up, and three weeks from now you'll be living in Boca Raton teaching at a community college and riding your bike on the beach."

This assumes that Boca Raton has a beach. I'm not sure about that part. But it can be somewhere else, too.

The problem with this question also is that a great number of people believe our planet has already been set foot upon by non earthlings. In that case we aren't doing anything that hasn't been done so the Chiefs super bowl is the obvious choice.

Knowing the secretive nature of our government, there has to be some kind of covert recruiting program going on. Really, it may not be that secretive. The US, historically, is kind of like the Yankees at acquiring intelligent minds.
