The Chiefs may have one or more joint practice sessions with the Arizona Cardinals at training camp in St. Joseph this summer.
The teams play one another in a preseason game on Aug. 10 at Arrowhead Stadium. The Cardinals will also be in the Midwest to play in the annual Hall of Fame game the previous weekend in Canton, Ohio.
“There’s been some mention of it,” Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said of the practice sessions with the Cardinals. “Whether it will happen or not, we’ll just have to wait and see. I’m not opposed to it. If this were my first year, I would be opposed to doing something like that. But I’ve been here a couple years and defensively, we’ve got our system in place and I think we’re making good progress with the offense so if it works out, I think it will be a good change. If it doesn’t work out, then we’ll just go right on with what we normally do.”
The Chiefs would regularly hold joint practices when they trained in River Falls, Wis., usually against the nearby Minnesota Vikings. But they haven’t practiced against another team since moving camp to Missouri in 2010.
“The pro is that you get a chance to work against somebody else other than your own guys, your teammates,” Crennel said. “As practice goes on, you get used to your teammates, and you know what their moves are and you can anticipate their strong points and their weak points and you can kind of play those things during practice.
“When you get a totally new person or a new body you have to go against, you don’t know them, and so you get a chance to see how your group is evaluated against a different group.”
Centering on Hudson
Rodney Hudson is replacing the retiring Casey Wiegmann at center even though he’s never been a center. Hudson was a guard and a tackle in college at Florida State and was a guard in his only start for the Chiefs as a rookie last season.
The Chiefs don’t seem to have much concern Hudson can handle the spot.
“He’s a smart kid, and he’s a competitive kid,” Crennel said. “They worked with him a little bit at center (at Florida State). We just felt like he had the tangibles and the intangibles to do it. He’s got to be tough, he’s got to be smart.
“In looking at him, we felt he had the center’s body type. Sometimes you’ll say, ‘We’ll try this guy.’ Last year we were able to work him at center a little bit and guard a little bit, and we felt like he could be a center so he’s going to do it full time now.”
