Former Los Angeles-Oakland Raiders defensive end Anthony Wayne Smith, who is awaiting a retrial on a 2008 murder charge, has been charged with three other murders.
Smith could face the death penalty, according to a City News Service report via the Press-Telegram.
The complaint accuses Smith of three more counts of murder for the Nov. 10, 1999 killing of Kevin and Ricky Nettles and the June 25, 2001 killing of Dennis Henderson. There were also special circumstance allegations of murder involving the torture on the victims and multiple murders.
"This came as quite a surprise," said defense attorney Michael S. Evans, who represented Smith in his first trial.
Smith is also being accused of kidnapping Nettles and Henderson to commit a robbery.
Smith was the top pick of the Los Angeles Raiders 1990 and played with the team in L.A. and Oakland between 1991 and 1997.
