View Full Version : Life Could you pass the US citizenship test?

Trivers

When immigrants want to become Americans, they must take a civics test as part of their naturalization interview before an immigration officer. Could you pass it?

The questions asked by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) are usually selected from a list of 100 sample questions that prospective citizens can look at ahead of the interview (though the examiner is not limited to those questions). Some are easy, some are not. We have picked some of the more difficult ones.

NOTES: Candidates are not given multiple choices in the naturalization interview -- which is conducted orally -- and are expected to respond with complete answers.

I answered these wrong:

How many amendments does the Constitution have?
The House of Representatives has how many voting members?
Who is the Chief Justice of the United States?

I did a lot of guessing. It reads that there is no multiple choice. I would have failed otherwise.

I passed with one miss.

It's funny, but the Bill of Rights was debated extensively. It shouldn't be part of any written document. How in the world do you write a Tome that could cover every right? The anti-Tome people were right, but lost.

An elected official most likely would have no clue about any of it.

Got the admenments wrong, put 23. If this wasn't multiple choice, like the oral exam that people are given, I may have gotten a few more wrong. A few of the ones you get you can get when you see the answer and it helps you recall.

The Vermont thing is a bit misleading - it was part of the original 13 colonies, but part of New York at the time. Just like Maine was part of Massachusetts.

20/20 But I read the thead first and had inside information.

Probably would have gotten 18 or 19 right without reading the thread.

The questions posed are mostly from news reports that have been talked about quite a bit in the news lately.

It would be better to take the test cold and answer all 100 of the possible questions.

I thought too much on the order of succession question. I was pretty sure it was Speaker of the House but then I was like "wait, is it Secretary of State?" and then I was like "I don't think so" but then I answered Secretary of State anyway like a dummy.

Anyway, 19/20. I'M OFFICIALLY AN AMERICAN!!!

Under our Constitution, some powers belong to the federal government. Which of the following is NOT a federal power?
A.
To declare war
B.
To print money
C.
To declare treaties
