We start with this disclaimer — this deal is not yet approved. And complex deals can fall apart fast.

But this one is picking up steam and details of what the Dwight Howard three-team trade involving the Nets and Cavaliers are starting to leak out.

The deal remains in flux, but Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports (and who you can see on the NBC Sports Network tonight) broke down the details of the trade as of right now.

In the proposed deal, Howard, Jason Richardson and Earl Clark would be sent to Brooklyn, and the Magic would receive the Nets’ Brook Lopez, Damion James, Sheldon Williams, Cleveland’s Luke Walton and three future first-round picks, sources said. Cleveland would receive Orlando’s Quentin Richardson, Brooklyn’s Sundiata Gaines, Kris Humphries (on a one-year guaranteed deal), a first-round pick and $3 million from the Nets. Brooklyn also would send (MarShon) Brooks to a fourth team to get them an additional first-round pick to send to the Magic.

There are a lot of questions. Will Humphries sign a one-year deal in Cleveland or will he demand the security of a multi-year deal. Will Brooks agree to sign wherever he might land? What kind of picks can the Nets get for MarShon Brooks?

Then the big one, is this the best the Magic can do?

It’s a whole lot less than the Hornets were able to get back for Chris Paul.

You never get equal value trading an NBA superstar. There are maybe 10 (Bobcats GM Rich Cho will say less than that) in the NBA and you need one or more to win. When you get one, you fight not to let him go. And if you have to move him you never get equal value because you’re not getting another franchise anchor back.

But the question becomes, how much can you get back? What is enough?

That’s the question Orlando’s front office is weighing.

The Nets are pushing for it because if they land Howard to go with Deron Williams and Joe Johnson, they are a powerhouse title contender.

What say you?

it's a bunch of trash and likely mid-to-low 1st round picks...but it's probably the best they can do since Howard has been such a wishy washy loser throughout the process

I was really hoping that the Magic would get Marshon Brooks.

If this deal goes through, the Magic will be the worst team in the NBA next season, and one of the worst in league history. But whatever; they're clearly in a needed full-rebuild. It'll take awhile to undo all the bullshit that former GM Otis Smith caused the team to suffer. Hell, the Magic are still paying Gilbert Arenas $20 million in each of the next two seasons. Thanks, Otis, you fuck.

Yeah, I've always liked the Magic, I was thrilled when Rashard went there. Fucking shame to see all of this unfold.

why would the Magic not want Marshon Brooks?

he's an instant starter/offensive output on that team especially since they just gave away their best scorer (Ryan Anderson) to Stern's Hornets for a bag of cheese curls and some pokemon cards. They need offense.

I just read that Bynum would like to go to Houston or Cleveland. I guess players don't like Orlando for some reason if you are choosing Cleveland over them.

Orlando is much further behind in rebuilding than Cleveland is. Bynum would compete faster in Cleveland.

Yeah it doesn't make sense. Nets would be trading Brooks to get a first round pick to send to Orlando. Orlando would be better off, or atleast much safer, to just take Brooks. Kid has looked great for us so far.

Pretty happy with the direction of the Cavs. Pretty unbelievable that the Cavs pretty much only have to give up Luke Walton to get a first round pick, not to mention a good Power Forward that they may or may not keep.

Bynum wants his own team and wants to get paid next year. Orlando is probably the perfect fit for that to happen.

Orlando and LA should call both their bluffs and see next year when they can offer each more money than anyone if they turn it down.

Won't Howard just walk to the Nets next year anyway?

Probably not.

If the Nets extend Lopez, they won't have any cap space for him. Even if they don't extend Lopez (unlikely), they won't have his 'Bird' rights, so whoever trades for him could offer him an extra year and a few more million/season on his max-deal.

If the Lakers or Rockets trade for him, there's an excellent chance that he re-signs there. It's an extra $20+ million as well as the immediate security of a long-term extension.

Bynum knows that they will not put any talent around him in Orlando. If its just for a paycheck, he can go anywhere.

Why do you say that? Orlando has never been known as a 'skinflint' franchise. They're a well-run organization for the most part, they just tend to have an implosion every decade or so due to an enigmatic superstar. They've never shown an inclination towards nickle and diming players or anything.

Howard's really be the shit in all this. The Magic have really worked hard to put a team around him and several time had a team that was conference championship caliber. Howard's offensive limitations are as much to blame for their failure to win a title as anything the Magic has done.

If Bynum goes there, they'll probably suck for a season or two in the hopes of grabbing a high draft pick that will allow them to put talent around him. They'll probably also overpay for a 2nd level FA but that's the nature of the league.

Bynum will be as well off in Orlando as he would be in Houston or anywhere else that he wants to be 'top dog'. If he wants to go to a 'superteam', he's not going to get to be the Alpha and by all accounts that's what he's after.

There's no reason for him to bristle at the thought of getting dealt to Orlando, except for the fact that he's something of a petulant, entitled shithead.

Their cap hell started when they foolishly gave Rashard Lewis a max deal (6 yr, $110M) off a sign and trade with the Sonics. He seemed a good fit as a scorer and perimeter shooter to put with Howard, but it hamstrung them in putting additional pieces around them. A guy getting paid that money needs to be a D Wade or Westbrook caliber player, and Lewis certainly wasn't that.

You are correct, it does not count against their cap or the luxury tax. But that awful contract had 60 million left on it, someone has to pay that to Arenas in full. So it makes the Magic a lot more reluctant to spend big money (as you can tell about them beating around the bush in all these trade talks, trying to dump the Richardsons or Duhon.) It's the principle of that team having to dish out all that money to a guy not even on the roster.

Yep, that's true. It's just the Rashard deal was a little easier to swallow because he was great in the 2009 playoffs and made a bunch of huge clutch shots that got them to the NBA Finals. He averaged about 20 ppg in those playoffs. As much as he wasn't worth the contract he got, Arenas was way worse, and they traded Rashard for him. Plus they had a great asset in Gortat and they got crap for him. J-Rich was good with Nash and got hot at times, but he just wasn't...good.
